Christobal Huet to Washington for a 2nd.

I think this is leading up to something else.

Holy crap. Huet to the Caps for a second round pick.

Edit: Muppet and BruceM beat me to it.

My brother's pissed that it was only a 2nd round pick. They were in good position, from what I've heard, to sign him at the end of the year.

Well, word is that Campbell will demand $6 million for 5+ years. I haven't heard anything to suggest he would take anything less than market value from SJ, but I guess we'll see.

I'm kind of shocked. It seems to be a cheap return for a good goalie, and I'm not sure Price is ready to take the reins of a playoff contender.

Wow, an arms race in the West. As if the disparity between conferences weren't big enough...

True, they probably could have resigned him, but this trade doesn't surprise me at all. Carey Price is their goalie of the future and it would have been tough next year with two #1's. I like that they made this move, but think they could have gotten a decent prospect along with the pick.

I guess this means that Ollie the Goalie won't be resigned as he's a UFA after this season.

Is Cristobal good, or is he just a fluke? That's a legitimate question, I think. If José Théodore can have a Hart-level season and fall down to Earth, Cristobal Huet can sink back to his LA-level.

If Bob Gainey and Roland Melanson saw things the didn't like in Huet and didn't intend to re-sign him, this isn't a bad return for it. Not a great return, but it beats nothing. Timmins can do wonders with a 2nd round pick .

I can't see them giving up what it would take to get both Hossa AND Lehtenon out of Atlanta. What of Heeeeeeeedbeeeeeeeeeerg? What other goalies are out there if they have something else in the works? Roloson? Surely not Gerber or Khabibulin

So Tampa gives up Richards to get Marc Denis Version 2.0 when they could have gotten Huet for a 2nd round pick?

And yes, I'm just bitter because the CBJ didn't get Richards.

I want to comment on the Brad Richards trade.

Tampa had to move him. Seriously. The team was so top-heavy (and still is), that they needed room for depth. However... I'm not convinced they got enough in return. Halpern and Jokinen aren't enough, and Mike Smith is yet another ordinary goalie in Tampa.

No, sure, I get why they did it. They like Price more for the future and wanted something in return for Huet. It makes sense. But it also reeks of giving up on the Cup hopes for this season, and I also have a hard time believing they couldn't get something more for him.

I don't think the Habs are after Lehtonen. Roloson would be a good fit, and that's probably why we heard about him. Khabibulin was set to become a Canadien a few years ago, but he was to be traded along with Aucoin, who got injured before the deal was officially made.

Given that Smith is only 25 and has played a grand total of 44 NHL games, I'll reserve judgement on him until he's been a full time starter for a season or two. With a few exceptions, most goalies don't blossom at that young an age.

I thought so too at first, but Smith's stats are pretty good, and he's young and cheap. In terms of a salary dump, this was a good move for one of the worst teams in the league.

According to hockeydb, he's never, in the juniors, the AHL or ECHL, had a save percentage higher than 91.7%. That's decent in the NHL, but not fantastic in the AHL. Anyway, sure, he could pan out, but it's not too inspiring.

Halek has been called up from Hamilton. Could that just be for tonight or will they really stick with Price leading them into the playoffs?
