Setting Filters
I've played OOTB the past couple of years, but decided this year with OOTB 8 to slog through the PDF manual to try to understand all the stuff that I've glossed over before. So I'll probably be posting a number of things I don't grok from the manual.
My first problem arises on page 49, discussing setting filters. It gives an example there of going to the Show All Players screen, then creating a new filter with three conditions: age is below 30; Bats is Right; and CON is at least 60 (errata: the graphic in Figure 12 should presumably show 60, rather than 40 to be consistent with the text). When I do this from the Show All Players screen, and click OK, the screen comes up blank; no players show up, unlike what the manual says should happen. I discovered the problem seems to be that "CON" is not displayed on the starting point "Show All Players" screen one of its columns... if I delete the CON condition from my filter, then I do see the players (i.e., right handed batters below 30). So... is the manual wrong? If so, what is the solution? If I want to filter by those three conditions, do I have to first create a Customized VIEW page with those conditions on it, in order for the filter to work? (Also, I'm confused that the manual says that you will see players with a "catcher ability of at least 25"... I haven't set any conditions like that at all in my filter. In fact, I haven't even specified "catcher" anywhere as I'm starting with the Show All Players screen as the example specifies. Maybe I was supposed to select catchers first but the example doesn't tell me to do that.) Thanks. Glad you have this forum section for newbies! Dave |

Filters can be fuzzy. They've proven a difficult area for me to utilize to their fullest, I'm certain. In your case, it may well be there are no players who meet the criteria. Are you sure there are players with contact at 60> who meet the other parameters as well?

Thanks, That's It
Right, it looks like CON never gets anywhere near as high as 40 (or 60), so the PDF manual example is wrong. The highest CON score for any current player is 19 (Joe Mauer). I thought the problem was that CON didn't appear on the screen, and am glad to know that wasn't it.
I don't know if they've changed the range for CON this year, or if that's been a longstanding error in the manual. Hopefully they look at these postings and make errata changes like that. Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll be back. Dave |

Well, I'm just following the OOTP manual PDF, and it was their own example, not mine, to specify CON to be greater than 60. I'm using the 2007 - 2008 rosters that come with the game, and as I said Joe Mauer has the highest CON rating of just 19 among current players. Maybe in the 1920s or something there were players with CON ratings above 60, I dunno. It would behoove OOTP to fix this error in their own PDF manual so as not to confuse people using it. By making the example specify CON greater than 6, not 60, for instance.
