Computer makes strange decisions..
On 2/13/07, Arizona signs Nick Neugebauer to a 3 year, $1.55 mil per year deal. Then, on 3/31/07, just out of the blue, they decide to release him. Its not very logical. True, he would be in the hunt for the #5 starting job (Arizona's #5 has the same ERA rating as Neugebauer), but they could have just kept him as trade bait or something. 26 year old starters shouldn't be cut right after signing contracts. Kind of unusual..

Doesn't say so in his player history..Maybe its because he has no endurance as a reliever, and thus, no "use" to Arizona?

They just randomly released 6 guys on that day, 2 of whom have 6 ERA ratings and are starters and 1 who has a 6 ERA rating and is a reliever. Arizona did not even attempt to send them to the minors, just flat out cut them.

Even stranger .. Philly just released Jose Contreras, who was signed in the offseason to a deal for 3 years worth about 3 million per. He has an ERA rating of 7, which would make him the Phillies 3/4 starter. Their #5 starter has an ERA rating of 3. They sent him down to the minors, and he accepted the demotion. Yet, they cut him a few weeks later. They could at least cut him at the end of the season or something, in case he would be needed (which, he would have been since their #2 starter went out for 3 weeks 10 days after he was cut)...
Anyone else getting strange AI moves ? |

I think the problem is the AI doesn't try very hard to trade a player when he refuses assignment to the minors. I have seen teams drop players they might not necessarily need on their majors roster with a few million dollar contract but could probably have easily traded.

They probably did try to "trade" him to the other computer teams looking for starters...

Maybe it's just poor planning. They sign these guys, then maybe sign a couple more or make a trade or two, and then they are in money problems and need to cut guys. Remember, there's reason it's called Artificial Intelligence, they don't think like we do. As much as Markus is trying to code it so the game thinks more like we do, it just can't happen. So while trying to trade someone, even for a fringe prospect just to get something for him seems great to us, the AI might think "We didn't get anything worth him", not thinking the "I'll take that just to get something for him" logic.
