Improving Prospect Ratings
I've never really noticed this before, but I tend not to follow my low-quality prospects, either, so it might have been happening all along. The only reason I noticed it this time is that it happened to my son (manager mode) in OOTP5.
I had to draft him (after all, he's my son!), even though he was a one-and-a-half star shortstop prospect. He struggled in my minor-league system for three years, and then, at age twenty-one, he takes off. He is now a four-star prospect, with all of his bating ratings increased at least one level - sometimes more. Before someone brings up the scouting issue, it was the same scout from beginning to end, and he was legendary. The player is now my big-league backup with a 6 in batting and routinely hits in the .300 range for the season. Is this a normal occurance for such a low-level prospect? Does spring training help that much? Do your minor-league coaches make THAT much of a difference? Just wanted to hear others' experiences with this phenomenon. |

Sounds like he was a diamond in the rough. Just as some sure-things fizzle, there are some late round picks who take off and come out of nowhere. It's great that it was your son this time!

Wonder what the owner and other prospects thought of you drafting your son and giving him preferential treatment?
![]() Curious what round did you draft him in.

I still wish I knew whether this is more random, or do the minor league coaches have that much influence in raising the talent levels of a player. |

I occasionallly have low level prospects that turn out to be decent players. Generally, they don't turn into stars, just respectable backups or fill in type players. It seems to be pretty random to me.

This happens, just like someone else said, plus prospects can bust. I've also seen situations like yours where the players talents will decrease after he advances to the higher minors after increasing in the lower minors. Fun part of the game, just like in real life.

Yep, seen it happen in OOTP4. Some team cut a guy rated Fair,Poor,Fair- he was one of the last players picked in the draft. I picked him up and he developed into a Brilliant, Good, Good stud.

yep, random talent bump (RTB). Wonderful thing when it goes up in your favor. Not so fun when your G/B/B prospect all of a sudden turns into F/A/F. (It works both ways)

I think this is one thing that has really improved in OOTP5. The randomness of the talent bumps are great. It used to be pretty standard to have the younger players getting increases and the older players to decline. Now you just don't even know what to expect. Guys that are 35 even get talents bumps now and again, which is great.

Yeah, Woody, I am banking on the older guys lasting in the Maelstrom or my team is in trouble.

Shane, when was the last time you had a prospect in the top 100 anyway?

I've been hit for leaving prospects in the minors too long because I couldn't fit them into the majors. I usually collect too many good pitching prospects. I had to use Moss as a MR to fit room for my 4 and 5 star pitching prospects ready to play now to avoid having them drop like a few others did.

I like the new development algorithms a lot. I've drafted 4-5 star players, had them nosedive to 1-2 stars and rebound to as high as 4 stars. Right now I've got a CF who I drafted 1st overall (I took over the Marlins after a 56-106 season). He looked like a sure-fire superstar. After 2 yrs. in A-AA his rating suddenly plummeted to 2 stars (same scout). Now he's back to 3 1/2 stars and looks to be a pretty good major leaguer.
