Leclaire is not the best goaltender in the NHL (shutouts are overrated anyway), but he's definitely 2nd or 3rd best in the West. I'd take him ahead of any of the 3 selected goaltenders, and ahead of Rick Nash. Fans voted great this year, but filling up the rest was a screwjob.

Agree 100%, Leclaire is one of the top goalies in the league this year, and maybe the Jackets will finally turn the corner this year. Greg

I'm probably one of the four people in North America watching it, but...
Two thoughts from the "Superskills Competition": 1. They need to play the entire all star game in the same format they played the rookie game. 2. Who is that guy in Manny Legace's jersey?

They need another scorer pretty badly. Nash and Zherdev are their only real major threats. Supposedly, they were very interested in Sundin, but were basically told they're not good enough for him to waive his NTC for. I don't particularly want them giving up any of their good young pieces for a rental player anyway. If they can bring in a scorer that's going to stay with the club, then all for it.
They just can't afford to stumble out of the gate after the break, they need to be firmly in the playoff race so that they have no reason to deal Foote and/or Fedorov, which obviously would be beneficial to the franchise long-term, but crush their chances this season. If they can bring in another legit scorer, I think they can climb as high as 5th in the conference. Their defense/goaltending is outstanding (5th in GA/G, 1st in PK). They're 20-1-3 when they score 3 goals or more. And the fact they've only scored 3 goals or more in 24 of their 51 games sums up their issues. In semi-related news, I just got tickets for when the Caps come to town on 2/5. First time Ovechkin's been in Columbus. Pretty excited to see him play. Jarkko Ruutu 'accidentally' takes out Kovalchuk's knee. I'm not a big Kovalchuk (or Atlanta) fan, but Jesus I hate J. Ruutu.

Actually, watching the play, it's doubtful whether Ruutu was intending to take out his knee. IMO, he saw Kovalchuk was exposed and went for a hit, but Kovalchuk saw him at the last minute and moved but not quite enough.
FWIW, for all the Pens games that I watch, I really don't see Ruutu as that dirty of a player. Sure, he looks to take advantage of guys that don't skate with their heads up at times and always finishes off his checks, but he rarely does anything beyond that. On the totem pole of vile enforcers, Ruutu is no where near the top of the dirtiest list.

Just for fun, I decided to throw together a mid-season projection on how the playoff seeds will end up. Keep in mind that I'm trying to pick the actual seeds, so no, I don't think that any time in the southeast is going to be the 3rd best team in the Eastern Conference. In fact, for fun, I'll throw in predicted point totals.
Eastern Conference: 1 Ottawa - 109 points 2 Philadelphia - 103 points 3 Washington - 83 points 4 Montreal - 103 points 5 New Jersey - 96 points 6 Buffalo - 93 points 7 Pittsburgh - 92 points 8 Boston - 89 points 9 NY Rangers - 85 points 10 Carolina - 84 points 11 NY Islanders - 82 points 12 Florida - 79 points 13 Toronto - 77 points 14 Atlanta - 75 points 15 Tampa Bay - 74 points Western Conference: 1 Detroit - 128 points 2 Dallas - 100 points 3 Vancouver - 94 points 4 San Jose - 99 points 5 Minnesota - 93 points 6 Calgary - 92 points 7 Colorado - 91 points 8 Anaheim - 90 points 9 Phoenix - 89 points 10 Nashville - 88 points 11 Columbus - 87 points 12 St. Louis - 85 points 13 Chicago - 84 points 14 Edmonton - 78 points 15 Los Angeles - 74 points

It's possible that I'm being overly dramatic here but the Blue Jackets are pretty much choking coming out of the gates here after the AS break.

As a Flyers fan, I'm better off pulling for them to finish 6th than to win the damn divison, how sad is that? Ridiculous that the Southeast winner is going to get a 3 seed. |

I think fan interest is waning, they need another lockout to get back in the news.

You think the Wings will be able to handle the 8 seed this time around?

Meh, even given their first round struggles, they have been the class of the NHL for almost 15 years now and show no signs of slowing down.
