This thread continues a dynasty that began in 1922.
I'm starting a new thread because the other one had grown past it's title & seemed a little misleading to me. In the future, I'll group the results by decade, this thread will be shortened in order to get the dates on track ('30-'39, '40-'49, etc) The '22-'34 seasons can be found here. http://www.400softwarestudios.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000332 Hope you enjoy it, Jon |

1935 Season
Babe Ruth retires after 21 seasons with a .309 lifetime avg (17th), 545 HR (1st), 1799 RBI's (2nd), 560 2b's (7th), 1911 BB's (1st), 1843 Runs (2nd). Off-season trades included Brooklyn sending 5 players to CHW for promising slugger Mel Ott. The White Sox received #3 starter Josh Billings & everyday starters CF Tex Jeanes & C Rick Ferrel as part of the package. The Dodgers also traded #2 starter Hal McKain to the Yankees as part of a nine-player swap that brought starting SS Lyn Lary to Brooklyn. Lary would eventually lose the job to ageless wonder Frankie Frisch while McKain would win 19 for the Bronx Bombers. Before the trading deadline, the Senators acquired Pirate slugger Al Simmons in return for SP Paul Hopkins (16-19) & a minor leaguer. 1935 World Series Game One: Athletics 6 Dodgers 2 Joe Hauser homered twice off Guy Cantrell to lead Philly to a series opening win. Brooklyn led 2-0 after the first but couldn't touch Curly Ogden afterwards. Game Two: Athletics 11 Dodgers 4 Philly touched starter Bobo Newsome for 6 runs in 6 innings, including 4 in the bottom of the first, to key a rout that gives the AL champs a 2-0 Series lead. C Mickey Cochrane was 4/6 with 3 RBI's. The win may have been costly for the A's, with starter George Earnshaw working on 2+ innings before leaving with a sore shoulder. Game Three: Athletics 9 Dodgers 6 Philadelphia scored 4 in the sixth and 4 more in the seventh to rally for the win. Brooklyn starter Lloyd Brown blew a 5-1 run in allowing 9 hits over 7 innings. 2b Fresco Thompson went 2-3 with a homer and 3 runs batted in. Game Four: Athletics 6 Dodgers 3 A 4-run, two-out rally in the top of the 7th gives the A's a Series sweep and back-to-back World Championships. Curly Ogden got the complete game win, Guy Cantrell pitched five solid innings before giving way to losing pitcher Dutch Leonard in the sixth. 1935 Awards Outstanding Batter Award AL - Joe Hauser (PHA) - .316/38/144 - 4th/1st/1st NL - Hack Wilson(NYG) - .303/40/115 - 6th/1st/3rd Outstanding Pitcher Award AL - Johnny Allen (NYY) - 22-6 2.69 - 1st / 1st NL - Pete Donohue (CIN) - 18-6 1.92 - 4th / 1st Outstanding Newcomer Award AL - Al Benton (PHA) - 20-6 4.71 NL - Al Hollingsworth (CIN) - 17-13 3.46 1935 League Leader Batting AL - Paul Waner (CHW) .335 NL - Babe Herman (BRO) .356 Homeruns AL - Joe Hauser (PHA) 38 NL - Hack Wilson (NYG) 40 RBI's AL - Joe Hauser (PHA) 144 NL - George Watkins (STL) 116 Mel Ott (BRO) 116 Stolen Bases AL - Stan Hack (DET) 52 NL - Evar Swanson (CIN) 40 ERA AL - Johnny Allen (NYY) 2.69 NL - Pete Donohue (CIN) 1.92 Wins AL - Johnny Allen (NYY) 22 NL - Johnny Stuart (STL) 20 Saves AL - Firpo Marberry (WAS) 18 NL - Lum Davenport (BRO) 17 Strikeouts AL - Bill Bayne (SLB) 232 NL - Ralph Birkofer (PIT) 298 [ 06-05-2002, 11:53 PM: Message edited by: MiddleGA ] |

1936 Season
No HOF'ers among the ton of retirees. A relative boatload of player movement during the season, including 5/27/36 P Waite Hoyt from the Browns to the Giants as part of a 9 player deal that sent P Freddie Fitzsimmons to St.Louis. On 7/3/36, the Red Sox acquired C Gabby Hartnett from the Cubs for SP Emerson Dickman. The Dodgers were part of the blockbuster of the season, accepting an offer from the White Sox that brought future HOF'er Paul Waner & Jimmy Shevlin to Brooklyn in return for Del Bissonette, Leo Durocher & Harry Courtney. 1936 World Series Game One - Dodgers 1 Athletics 0 For the fifth straight season, it's Brooklyn vs Philadelphia for the World Championship. And for the 2nd year in a row, it's Guy Cantrell vs Curly Ogden in the opener. Cantrell wins the battle this time, turning in a brilliant 1 hit CG. Babe Herman drove in Buddy Myer with a 5th inning single for the game's only run. Game Two - Dodgers 6 Athletics 3 Lloyd Brown allowed 2 runs over 7 innings as the Dodgers held serve at home to take a 2-0 Series lead. Paul Waner & Buddy Myer each drove in a pair of runs off A's start Jim Peterson who took the loss. Game Three - Dodgers 9 Athletics 7 Lum Davenport worked 3 innings of scoreless relief to save the win for Bobo Newsome. The Dodgers hammered George Earnshaw for 8 runs in 4 innings and then watched as the A's narrowed the gap to 8-7 with a five-run 6th inning. Riggs Stephenson went 3-4 with a homer & 3 RBI's before leaving the game in the 8th with a stiff shoulder. Game Four - Dodgers 7 Athletics 5 Jimmy Shevlin's bases-loaded single with two out in the top of the ninth gave the Dodgers a 4-0 Series sweep. A 48 minute rain delay in the top of the 3rd limited Philly ace Curly Ogden to just 3 innings (3 ER) while rookie Van Mungo lasted into the fifth. The weather forced the A's to go deep into their bullpen while Brooklyn got 4.2 innings of scoreless relief from Roe, Kimsey & eventual winner Dutch Leonard. The Dodgers scored single runs in the 7th & 8th before getting the crucial pair in the 9th. 1936 Awards Outstanding Batter Award AL - Al Simmons (WSH) - .321/34/136 - 6th/1st/1st NL - Hack Wilson(NYG) - .315/30/111 - 10th/3rd/3rd Outstanding Pitcher Award AL - Curly Ogden (PHA) - 23-7 3.33 - Wins/2nd ERA/1st NL - Pete Donohue (CIN) - 21-8 2.59 - Wins/2nd ERA/1st Outstanding Newcomer Award AL - Joe DiMaggio (NYY) - .291/22/119 4th/Rbi 5th/HR NL - Johnny Mize (STL) - .330/15/86 4th/Avg 1936 League Leaders Batting AL - Hal Trosky (CLE) .340 NL - Paul Waner (BRO) .354 (by less than .001 over Cuckoo Christensen of CHC) Homeruns AL - Al Simmons (WSH) 34 NL - Mel Ott (BRO) 40 RBI's AL - Al Simmons (WSH) 136 NL - Mel Ott (BRO) 127 Stolen Bases AL - Ray Chapman (NYY) 41 NL - Evar Swanson (CIN) 38 ERA AL - Curly Ogden (PHA) 3.33 NL - Pete Donohue (CIN) 2.59 Wins AL - Thornton Lee (CLE) 24 NL - Ralph Birkofer (PIT) 25 Saves AL - Frank Mulroney (BOS) 19 NL - Lum Davenport (BRO) 19 Strikeouts AL - Larry French (BOS) 264 NL - Ralph Birkofer (PIT) 287 |

1937 World Series
Game One: Yankees 3 Dodgers 2 Reserve catcher Joe Glenn drove home the game winner with a bottom of the 9th single to give the Yankees first blood in the Series. Glenn played only 40 games in the regular season but is the only backstop on the AL champs roster after starter Bill Dickey was forced to the DL in the final week of the season by back spasms. Former Dodger Hal McKain outdueled Guy Cantrell for the CG victory. Game Two: Yankees 7 Dodgers 6 Jimmie Reese went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI's, including a game-winning single in the bottom of the 9th to give the Yankees a commanding 2-0 Series lead. Reliever Lum Davenport, who set an NL record for saves with 21, took the loss while Spud Chandler was the winner in spite of giving up six earned runs. Game Three: Dodgers 5 Yankees 4 2b Les Burke singled home two runs in the bottom of the 8th to pull the Dodgers back within a game of the Yankees. Seven walks doomed starter Bunny Hearn while Bobo Newsome got the win with 8 innings of work, scattering 12 hits. Lum Davenport sealed the deal. Game Four: Yankees 8 Dodgers 6 Hal McKain gets his 2nd win of the Series, shutting down a late Brooklyn rally by starting a game-ending double play with the tying run at the plate. Dodger starter Van Mungo lasted only 4 innings (4 ER) & the bullpen allowed four more Yankee runs. McKain even added an insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the 9th. Game Five: Yankees 6 Dodgers 4 (14 innings) Reserve Dusty Cooke drove in the game winner with a triple & Roy Sherid worked a 3rd scoreless inning of relief as the Yankees claim the World Championship and deny the Dodgers once again. The loss overshadowed a brilliant 13 K/11 IP performance by Guy Cantrell. 1937 Awards & Leaders Outstanding Player Award AL - Chuck Klein (PHA) .327/31/127 6th/3rd/2nd NL - Wally Berger (BOS) .305/34/110 10th/1st/2nd Outstanding Pitcher Award AL - Bunny Hearn (NYY) 21-7 3.87 1st/8th NL - Johnny Lanning (BSN) 17-10 2.79 6th/1st Outstanding Newcomer Award AL - Tommy Henrich (NYY) .282/29/116 NL - Jim Tobin (PIT) 14-7 3.62 Batting Leader AL - Bill Moore (BOS) .370 NL - Jimmy Shevlin (BKN) .376 Home Runs AL - Al Simmons (WSH) 38 NL - Wally Berger (BSN) 34 RBI's AL - Lou Gehrig (NYY) 137 NL - Babe Herman (BKN) 114 Stolen Bases AL - Stan Hack (DET) 39 NL - Frankie Frisch (BKN) 43 Wins AL - Hearn (NYY) & Spud Chandler (NYY) 21 NL - 4 with 19 (Hubbell/NYG, Birkofer/Pit, Cantrell/BKN & Ruffing/PHI) ERA AL - Paul Schreiber (CLE) 2.70 NL - Bill Lee (CHC) 2.95 Strikeouts AL - Larry French (BOS) 322 ** MLB record NL - Ralph Birkofer (PIT) 275 |
