OK to own a DL version as well as a CD version?

It's been more than a week since I ordered the CD version of OOTP5, and still I have not received it.

I see that you don't have to DL it all in one chunk; you can get the game in 12-13 separate pieces. This is a VERY good setup, because not everybody has high speed access and/or a stable dialup connection, and not everybody wants to install download managers that put God-knows what else on their computer.

I would really like to begin playing the game and I'm thinking of having the computer dude at work download the game for me and put it on floppies for me to take home and install on my machine. But I suppose my CD will eventually, someday, arrive in the mail. Is it OK to have one copy of the game on CD and a downloaded copy on my computer? Is there any difference between the DL version and the version that will one of these days show up in my mailbox?

Yes, but you still only have two installs or licenses to use. I'm thinking that this would work as I have not actually tried it.

Only two installs could present problems for some people, because it really limits your flexibility to upgrade your machine and or buy a new machine, and does not take into account "acts of God" like crashes, viruses, corruption of data, etc. Also, when your hard drive starts filling up, the tendency is to uninstall some games and play others for a while, and then eventually un-install those and re-install others. I'm assuming that uninstalling and re-installing multiple times will not be possible with OOTP5 unless you buy another license.

On my home computer, I've lost all my data 2 times since I bought it, once because of a computer store "service" department screw up and once to a virus.

Because of the business I'm in I understand fully the need to protect intellectual property, but with the hassle of e-licensing and limited installs, I wish OOTP5 could have been an "order the CD" game, with the buyer getting a "key" associated with that CD, and required to insert the CD to play the game.

I'm not questioning 400 Studios' need to protect its product, I'm just saying that the current e-licensing system seems, to me, to be less than user friendly. I'm aware that this is just the way it's going to be...this is just my 2 cents.

I have a question for you, Steve, about the video setting required and how that is handled by the game, but I'll PM you about it rather than clutter the board.

You don't have 2 installs. You get 2 licenses. There's a difference. You can uninstall and reinstall as many times as you want.

If you buy a new PC unlicense the game from the old PC and relicense on the new one.

If you have a virus/crash/lose a license, send an e-mail to Via-Tech's tech support and they will restore your license. I had a crash and the restored licenses for OOTP4 and TDCB within 24 hours.

Thanks for the explanation. I hope this process with Via-Tech continues to be relatively painless, because it appears that some gamers with a lot more experience with e-licensing than I have are very much not in favor of it.

Still, I wish I could just pop a CD in and play. Just my personal preference.

As Mr Spleen has so been so kind to clarify my post above about the licenses, they can be used any number of times(Via-Tech will gladly reset them if you have any crashes, etc) but you can use NO MORE than 2 at one time.

Feel free to search the boards on this topic as it has been brought up many times in the past and will in the future I'm sure.

Let me know if you have any questions.

One thing to keep in mind is that MOST of the problems that people have had were a number of years ago and much less are recent issues.

Aigh!

This is just my personal preference speaking, but I've got OOTP installed in two separate locations, and shuttling the CD back and forth just to make sure I could play the game at any given time would be a large hassle.

I hate the 'no-CD, no-play' copy mechanisms, but I can understand why they're needed. I'd just hate to see it applied to OOTP.
