For you who have asked... I use the 4.0 database. Vida Blue played out his whole career as an Oakland Athletic. He finished up with 269 wins and 159 losses with a career ERA of 3.89... a fringe hall of famer. Maybe I'll throw him in in a couple of years, since I'm a fan of his, too.

I had good ol' Hector Villanueva go crazy in my league. Although he wasn't bad in his stint as a Cub and Cardnial, he wasn't near the player he's become in my solo league. I can still hear old Harry Carry trying to pronounce his name after about 7 innings and 14 beers... he simply called him "Hector" after that.

In September of 2000 I went to one of the last games played by the now-defunct Aberdeen Arsenal of the independent Atlantic League. The paid attendence was something like 75 at a little community college field. Their opponent that night was the Nashua Pride, and their DH was Sam Horn. I don't remember what he did that night, but he looked like he'd put on a few pounds since his days with the O's - that 6'5", 250 listed on BaseballReferece.com was definitely a little low. He also looked like he'd still have trouble beating Dom DeLuise in a 50 yard dash.
This got me motivated, and I just looked up the Nashua Pride, and Sam was still with them last year. He hit .295-13-47 as their DH.

quote:One of the best baseball quotes I ever heard was about Hector. I think one of the Cubs coaches said it after he hit his first major league triple. The guy said "I always expected him to hit a triple. I just never expected it to be inside the park."

Someone should contact Sam and tell him about his 800-homer career in an OOTP alternate baseball universe.

Had to revive this post with this picture of Sam Horn's career stats to date...

Hey, no offense, but I've always thought of Sam Horn as the poor man's Eric Wedge... what an uproar when the Sox left him unprotected in the expansion draft so they could keep Ellis Burks, who they ended up releasing a short time later!

In later innings, you could get an additional two or three "ragas" in the middle of his name. It was like he couldn't stop pronouncing the guy's name! Of course, my all-time favorite was during spring training when the Cubs were playing San Diego, and Harry looked at the SD on the cap and called them South Dakota. |

Here's what Sam Horn did in my replay league (1904-2001):
Pretty wacky! 1,925 Ks in slightly less than 10 seasons!

He stuck out more than he got a hit, almost twice as many Ks as hits.

I'm also a lifelong Oriole fan and remember watching him play. Big guy. Of course everybody was big when I was 11 years old. I have no trouble remembering watching him play though. He's also in the genesis game "sports talk baseball" on the orioles. Which was I beleive the first incarnation of the World Series Baseball games.

I used to play Baseball Mogul before I discovered STB. In every league I had in Mogul, Jose Cruz Jr was the most dominant player in the history of baseball always ending up with like 800 home runs. That's whats great about STB is that there are so many more variables at play, no league trends the same way. In my 2002 league, Trot Nixon had a career ending injury. I'm sure that Trot would not like to hear about that.

The reason I ask is that when I was younger and playing Micro League Baseball, a friend of mine and I use to enter in true stats from the backs of baseball cards. Kincely was one of those guys who played in the last week of the season, belted three home runs in 16 ABs, and became Micro League's all-time home run king.

???
How did the teams that Sam Horn played on did? In that league where he was with Milwaukee where he'd actually hit over .250 i'm guessing his team did well. But the league where he's with Boston and batting below the Mendoza line... how much did the home runs help the Red Sox?

I used to love Sam Horn. Funny that Kevin Maas came up.
Anyone remember Wayne Simpson of the (60's) Reds teams? he was like 16-1 at the All Star Break and hurt his arm and slowly ended his career. They say he was unhittable.
