CPU Pitching Staff
Solo league, Basebal Boom Era, here's the pitching staff for one of the World Series teams (managed by the CPU)...
Code:
Player # Role B-day Bats Throws ERA W L S WHIP STARTERS Bill Eyman 9 SP 7/28/1924 Left Left 4.94 15 13 0 1.32 Xavier Rosario 72 SP 6/6/1924 Both Right 2.87 14 11 0 1.19 David Porter 71 SP 6/8/1916 Both Right 2.60 19 5 0 1.05 Hilario Valero 43 SP 2/26/1919 Right Right 4.10 18 11 0 1.26 Kyle Youngs 11 SP 3/17/1912 Right Right 3.07 0 1 0 1.36 RELIEVERS Victor Dailey 2 CL 11/27/1924 Left Left 2.31 2 5 41 31 Harold Sutton 9 MR 10/12/1917 Left Left 3.32 3 4 0 32 Albert Murrieta 63 MR 5/9/1916 Left Left 3.89 0 4 0 27 Walter Hardcastle 45 MR 2/12/1918 Left Left 8.00 2 0 0 25 Aldo Desouza 85 MR 7/28/1922 Left Left 2.83 1 1 0 30

I'm with the CPU on that one. If a guy can pitch - it doesn't matter if he's a lefty or righty -- he can pitch. If all the lefties are JUST lefty specialists, I agree with you -- needs some balance. But if the guy can pitch -- doesn't matter which arm he throws with.

I tend to try and get a mix of L/R's myself.

It doesnt matter if they are lefty or righty. It matters how they pitch against left and right handed batters. (L AVG and R AVG)

I agree -- if it's pretty even, it doesn't matter if he's lefty or righty, but if it's lopsided - i.e. LAVG is .185, and RAVG is .285, it's time to bring up someone (either a righty or lefty) that can handle right-handed batters. The first things I look at are stats and ratings. And if the guy is holding L/R AVG to .200, then I don't care if he's lefty or righty, just because I want balance, I'll sign him, or bring him up.

Here's the splits on these guys. Given that RH hitters considerably outnumber the LH hitters in the typical league, this bullpen does not appear to be ideal.
Code:
IP L Avg R Avg Dailey 66.1 .131 .194 Sutton 57.0 .164 .273 Murrieta 39.1 .278 .307 Hardcastle 27.0 .136 .448 Desouza 47.2 .207 .273 One thing is for certain, you won't see an all left-handed bullpen on any professional team in real life.

That guys SHOULD be a pure specialist.
I remember when the Cubs carried 4 lefties in about 1993. Randy Myers, Dan Plesac, Paul Assenmacher, and Chuck McElroy all had to co-exist in the pen with righties Bob Scanlan and Jose Bautista. Scanlan and Bautista were burned out, McElroy was ineffective because he wasn't pitching much, and Plesac never was thrilled with the situation because he signed to be the closer, then Larry Himes spent some more of the money that SHOULD have been earmarked for Greg Maddux on Myers. |

I recently setup my fictional league and had the cpu draft all of the teams, and I took over the team with the worst combo of lowest payroll and worst minor league system (Cornwall Crabs)
Every pitcher on the major league squad is a righty. I know thats not as rare as all lefties, but it bothers me a bit. Im in the market now for a lefty for the pen |

The funny thing is Lefties usally get their asses kicked in OOTP...
I know a lot of guys who don't even carry a lefty on their staff because the split was so poor in OOTP4. |

Kevin Duty is the only lefty MR on my staff, and he's not doing too poorly. Not great by any means, but ... He's got the worst ratings of my majors MRs at 6-6-6(6) (ooo, scary...), and in early May he's 1-0-0 in 9 games, 3.55 ERA, with an IRS% of 12.4 (4 of 31) and no homers allowed.
His splits are interesting, too ... vL avg, obp, slg: .178, .417, .444 vR avg, obp, slg: .293, .356, .341
