Team Name Requests
Hey all.
I was wondering if I could ask for help in naming some teams. Here are the cities that I'm looking for help with names: Akron Anderson Ann Arbor Appleton Aurora Barrie Belleville Bloomington Brampton Brantford Buffalo Burnsville Canton Champaign Chicago Cleveland Davenport Dearborn Detroit Dubuque Duluth Eagan Eau Claire Eden Prairie Elgin Erie Flint Fort Wayne Gary Grand Rapids Green Bay Guelph Hamilton Janesville Joliet Kalamazoo Kenosha Kingston Kitchener-Waterloo Lafayette Lansing London Lorain Madison Mansfield Markham Milwaukee Minneapolis Mississauga Munice Naperville Oshawa Oshkosh Peoria Peterborough Pittsburgh Racine Rochester, NY Rochester, MN Rockford Saginaw Sarnia Schaumburg South Bend St Paul St. Catherines St. Cloud Sudbury Syracuse Taylor Thunder Bay Toledo Toronto Troy Utica Warren Waterford Waukegan Waukesha Youngstown I realize it's a lot, but if it's one thing that I've found in this forum (next to logos) team names are always well done by the folks that stop by here. If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it. |

What is the era you are playing?
Modern? Do you want them based on town history or geography...or just a good nickname? |

![]() The era is modern, although having ti lean more towards town history/geography is preferable. Stuff like the WIld or other names of that ilk I'd like to stay away from (but wont' reject solely on those merits) |

I will work on these as time permits.
It will take awhile to research town histories. Akron Summits (located in Summit county...Akron in Greek is a rough translation of "summit") Anderson Athletics (no special reason...town is not famous for much) Ann Arbor Greens (called "Tree Town" because of 50,000 trees) Appleton Foxes (located on Fox River) Aurora Electrics ("City of Lights"...one of first towns to have electric street lighting...1881) Barrie Baycats (located near the water...tourism is main industry) Belleville Rhinelanders (90% of the residents are of German descent) Bloomington Stonecutters or Bikers (Indiana town where the University of Indiana is located...Little 500 bike race is held each year...featured in the movie Breaking Away (1980)...limestone pits and rock quarries are in the area) Bloomington Sports (Minnesota city is the home of pro teams Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves) Brampton Boomers (one of Canada's fastest-growning cities) Brantford Bells or Grands (located on the Grand River...Alexander Graham Bell was a resident...called the "Telephone City". Buffalo Showboats (tie together canal boats and the old phrase "shuffle off to Buffalo". Burnsville Hotshots Canton Legends (NFL Hall of Fame located here) Champaign Cybertechs or Yahoos (computer software industry...home of Yahoo) Chicago Hitmen or Untouchables (baseball/crime double entendres) Cleveland White Caps (for lake area waters and also a team that wears white caps) Davenport Pilots or Colonels or Mudcats (located on the Mississippi River, named for Colonel Davenport) Dearborn Generals or Mustangs (named after Revolutionary general, headquarters of Ford Motor Company) Detroit Dubuque Pioneers or Miners (namesake Julien Dubuque mined minerals in the area, one of the oldest settlements west of the Mississippi River) Duluth Superiors or Spirits (located on Lake Superior and in Spirit Valley) Eagan Eau Claire Clearwaters or Cavaliers or Explorers (in French town name means "clear water") Eden Prairie Elgin Erie Flint Fort Wayne Gary Grand Rapids Green Bay Guelph Hamilton Janesville Joliet Kalamazoo Kenosha Kingston Kitchener-Waterloo Lafayette Lansing London Lorain Madison Mad Dogs (no reason, just like the name) Mansfield Markham Milwaukee Minneapolis Mississauga Munice Naperville Oshawa Oshkosh Peoria Peterborough Pittsburgh Racine Rochester, NY Rochester, MN Rockford Saginaw Sarnia Schaumburg South Bend St Paul St. Catherines St. Cloud Sudbury Syracuse Taylor Thunder Bay Toledo Toronto Troy Utica Warren Waterford Crystals (town named for Irish city famous for its Waterford crystal) Waukegan Warriors (settled by Indians...name means "little fort" in Potawatomi) Waukesha Foxes (name means "fox" in Indian language) Youngstown Steelers or Miners (steel and coal industries) Last edited by Eugene Church; 12-30-2007 at 07:20 PM. |

canadiancreed, are you still interested in this project?
I will continue to help, but would like some feedback on the names I submitted. Do you want me to continue it? Last edited by Eugene Church; 12-05-2007 at 05:20 PM. |

Still working on this and making a little progress.
Please stop me if you don't like the nicknames. No offense will be taken, if you prefer better names. |

I understand this project has been put on hold for awhile.
Once it is revived, I will work on it. |

In one league I created, I had the Hamilton Crullers, a nod to the Tim Hortons donut chain (the first franchise store opened there). Dressed 'em in chocolate brown with cream and red as the secondary colours -- the colour scheme on their coffee cups.
The set-up I'm currently running has the Mississauga Rattlers at the AAA level, a take-off on the snake -- the Massasauga rattler. They wear some ugly, if inaccurate yellow uniforms with green and black trim. (Hey, it's 1972 in my league.) For Kitchener-Waterloo, how about the Twins? Picked that for a AAA team, mainly because it made designing the unis easier. Their parent club just added an A-ball team in the same metro area: the Galt (soon to be Cambridge) Triplets. As the petrochemical industry is very prominent in Sarnia, I've got a team called the Sarnia Oilers in my A league. You can guess which company sponsors them from their caps, which feature a blue oval with the letters SO superimposed in red. London Brewers might work -- Labatt's and Carling got their start there. Lots of insurance companies there, too, so how 'bout the London Lifers or the Actuaries? Another possibility: the London Locomotives -- GM used to build diesel locomotives there. Brampton was once known as the Flower Town, so as a tribute to Portland's early hockey team I'd call 'em the Brampton Rosebuds, though it seems better suited to the movie A League of Their Own. The biggest employer in Kingston is the Canadian Forces base, so you might go with something like Generals. Given its history, Loyalists might be a good choice. (I tacked that on onto my Belleville, Ontario, franchise -- Loyalist College has its campus there.) It's the Limestone City, so maybe the Kingston Quarrymen? |

Green Bay Bluejays used to play in GB, I like that name.
Currently, there's the Green Bay Bullfrogs. |
