The Western League beat the Eastern, 10-6.

Embarassingly, 5 of the earned runs came off of Ions pitchers Masse (4) and Carriere (1).

Carriere (3-0-14) currently is third in the Eastern league in saves, and while Masse (6-2-1) is credited with helping keep the Ions in the race, as he at one point led the EL in wins despite being a middle reliever.

Ions shortstop Daniel Bazinet was removed from the game after scratching his cornea. Frederic Meloche has been called up from AAA to take his place in the lineup where he will bat eighth.

This is Meloche's first visit to the majors.

A .254 hiter in the minors, Meloche is considered to be an excellant defenseman, capable of playing at every position in the infield without trouble.

At the beginning of August we're sitting at a nice 54-27, 2 game sup from a surging Belfast squad and 4 from Brewer. Bangor has somehow forgotten how to play and has dropped like a stone to the basement, sitting 23 games back with a 31-50 record.

With a month and a half to go, things are looking solid - much more than I anticipated when I took this team over in the Spring.
