Tough Crowd

I just finished my 1967 season and man is the game hard on me regarding my GM Score for the season. My Phillies tied with the Astros for the NL Pennant, and I lost the 1 game playoff tie breaker. So I was given a GM score of 34 out of 100. Ouch. Sure my record was only 89-74 but still you'd think tieing for the pennant would garner a better score than that... The 34 is only 2 points higher than the year I took my Orioles to a 4th place finish. But then again i've found the GM scores to be rather low in this league. (I scored a 23 when I took the SF Giants to a 91-71 record and a 2nd place finish. 11 games behind since the Braves won 102 games but still, 2nd place finish and 91 wins is good).

The only time I have gotten a score in the green was last season when I won the World Series, getting 97 wins which resulted in a GM score of 85.

Maybe i'm being "punished" because I don't make any trades or sign free agents to improve my team, which of course I can't do since trades are turned off and free agency is not in effect (financials are on though, so one can sign players who have been released and I do make the occasional signing or waiver claim).

And for those who recognize my name, yes this is the same league where I was GMing the Orioles and lost Carl Yaztremski to a CEI. Funny thing in this league is this year's batting average leader (and Best Hitter Award winner) is Rod Carew who I drafted for the Giants a few years back. The AL Batting Average winner is Tony Olivia who I drafted for the Orioles. Apparently I know how to draft figure batting champions... Also interesting to see the Giants (my previous team 2 years ago) finish third, 3.5 games behind me. And the Orioles finished 2nd (7 games behind the Yankees) who were my first team.

Heh. I had a team with around 100 wins go all the way and win the WS. I think my score was a 64. It was somewhere right around there. It said it was a good score underneath it too. I just wonder what you have to do to get a perfect 100. Not lost a game?

The score depends on your team as well, so when you take a bad team with a low payroll to the playoffs your score will certainly be higher than the one you'd get for taking the 2006 Yankees to the WS.

But you get a lower score if you bungle the hiring and firing of your long lasting, good winning, playoff making manager, right?

On one level, I completely understand what you're saying, but on the other hand, if you do your job reasonably well, and your boss announces to your colleagues that you've been offered a 16 % pay cut, I think you'd be insulted.

Exactly, and though Torre might have considered the offer an insult there were a potential 3.0 million in bonuses available if he won the WS which would have amounted to a raise. Not so bad for a Yankee manager who hasn't won a WS since 2000 IMHO. I believe he was ready to go and they were ready for him to go. At least they didn't make fools of themselves and fire him.
