What's a good VORP ??

Hey - My question...what's a good VORP ? I realize negative is bad, but is there an "average" number or does it depend on offensive conditions ? (I guess I had more than one question !) Thanks everybody

This is a pretty good article outlining the basics, and listing VORP leaders from 2006:

sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove06/columns/story?columnist=neyer_rob&id=2751842

VORP is cumulative- should go up with more playing time unless a player is terrible- and is measured in runs. A guy with a 60 VORP over a full season added 60 more runs than a replacement level player. 10 runs is normally equated with 1 win, and for one player to add 6 wins is definitely good. If a guy plays a full season in your starting lineup, you'd probably want to see at least a 20-30 VORP at the minimum- something well above zero, in any case. Anyone with negative VORP doesn't belong in the Majors.

Agreed that the Neyer article above is a good place to start.

Zero VORP is generally performing near 80% of the league average (rough definition of 'replacement player'), therefore a zero VORP player is still not real good and you could probably find a better player. An average to good everyday player should be in the 20's or 30's through a complete season. Below 15 or so, they might provide some help (like a platoon or defensively), but they probably have some holes. Obviously, relievers are different because they don't play as much. Anything positive is probably good.

Again, the stat is cumulative, so looking at a negative VORP over a month may just mean he had three bad starts or something. A guy could have a -4.5 VORP in May, but be 20+ in June and July to be valuable overall. Its best use is to roughly compare seasons.

It's remarkable, but I've been playing this game for 2 1/2 years and this is the first time that I have had any interest in VORP. I think it's due to reading this thread and the linked article, having thereby gained a frame of reference for this statistic rather than just an extremely arcane explanation of how it is calculated.
