The Red Sox didn't become anything other than successful.

I have to agree that the general good will I'd built up over the years regarding the Red Sox has been eroded a bit. Partly that came from living among their fanbase for a while without being a fan of the team, but partly it is that once they won the WS, many of the fans had that "new money" vibe about them if you know what I mean.

That is, when the Yankees win a World Series, it's gotten to the point that their fans are pretty reserved and cordial. They're old money. They're used to it. When the Red Sox win - well, anything, many of their fans act like they did it themselves. But I haven't seen that same sort of behavior from fans of other teams, not even the White Sox, who had a longer drought. That might be because of less exposure.

It's not them - it's a portion of the fan base. At least that's how I see it.

A lot of teams would be happy to have a fan base with that sort of connection. It means steady $$$$

Right, I think that just is b/c they are now successful. The fan base is just bigger, which includes people with a shorter history of fandomm.

It seems hating Red Sox is the new hip thing now. A nature bounce back from the Red Sox love fest a couple of years ago. At least that attracts viewers better than feeling indifferent.

Yeah, but they were not originally scheduled for November; the end of the season was pushed back that year due to 9/11. I meant, is this the first time a World Series game was normally scheduled for November? That is, if the series makes it to game 7.

Yes, thanks to our friends at Fox. Fun fact: If the World Series goes to six games, it will mean the Rockies will have had the same number of off-days during the playoffs (17) as they did during the entire regular season.

So did the Yankees but that didn't keep people from bashing them (especially Red Sox fans). Now that the Red Sox have done EXACTLY what the Yankees have been known to do, it's Ok.

I take everything that they do, magnify by 10, and write in hyperbole about how one of the best players of all time sucks, or a sure fire hall of fame shortstop blows, or a the best pitcher of our generation is a mercenary turncoat (though, Pedro is a saint). Not b/c it is right, but b/c I have to -- I'm compelled.

But, right, I expect outspoken people to like the underdog, which the Red Sox are not. So, I don't expect outspoken people to like them.

I have to admit I actually like quite a few of the Yankees, though that was lessened when they bid adieu to Torre. How can you not want Mariano Rivera on your team? I'd still take Alex Rodriguez at whatever price he asks for. I really wanted the Sox to win the Clemens sweepstakes at the beginning of the year. Jeter is a fantastic player, though not for his clutchiness or Gold Glove defense. Damon was a good dude and a very good player while he was here, I don't begrudge him taking the money. Andy Pettitte might be my third favorite pitcher of the last 15 years after Pedro & Roger.

But when it's game time it's no fun to remember all that. All that matters is that red, white, & blue > pinstripes.

This is a great post. It was not until I realized that this was true of many that I really started feeling comfortable here. Now, of course, it does not matter anyway; the next stage of forum evolution.
