What a game tonight between the Leafs and Sabres. Leafs blew the lead three different times and the Sabres won in overtime when McCabe fired it into his own net. Great Stuff! Especially since the Sabres won....

Something that I never thought I'd hear said by a Leaf fan is that they should trade McCabe. Of course now.....who would want him? He's playing as if he's out to lunch.

I want to see a sport that has some intensity, excitement and passion, thats why after watching the NHL for 20+ years I no longer do. I hoped the strike would bring back the passion the game had lost but alas todays hockey is a featureless, passionless, borefest. 90% of NHL players are now interchangeable robots. I used to live and die hockey, watched every game I could, went to as many games as I could. Haven't watched a game in over a year now and don't miss it a bit cuz the game I loved isnt around anymore.

While I agree that the NHL has went backwards because of it's current leadership, the loss of goon hockey IMO isn't on the radar for it's ills.

As for passion, may I suggest watching some Toronto/Ottawa games soemtime?

"The loss of goon hockey" was the finger out of the dyke that caused the flood. The ripple effect (more of a tidal wave) from "cleaning" up hockey is the root of todays boring hockey product. Only one other dynamic has effected hockey as much as the "cleaning up" of hockey and that is the effect of much larger/faster players creating a playing surface that is much too small for the game.

Well, I agree with that last point. Whenever I watch 80's hockey, two things stand out to me: how acrobatic and technically unsound goaltenders were before Patrick Roy came along, and the room there was on the ice. Seriously, it looks as though they're playing on an international size rink.

I personally like the faster-paced game today - and reasonable scores consistent with historical norms. The dead puck era corresponded to a general drop in interest in hockey, at least south of the border.

Right on. Players also seem to have ample amount of time because everything happens so much slower than today, and the players are smaller. If you go to the very early 80s or the 70s and watch Phil Esposito play, he looks like a big guy and he's listed as 6'1", 205 lbs in hockeydb.

You get the same thing in all sports though. ook at the size of any player in any of the Big FOur twenty, thirty, even fifty years ago, then compare to today. Chaned across the board (although we dont' ahve any 6'5, 350lbers like football....yet)

Sadly, I have lost the spreadsheet I had to prove it, but there are more goals scored now than the historical mean. In fact, I think the "dead puck era" of the 90's was pretty much average historically, it's a horrible term for it. One of the records we hear a lot about is George Hainsworth's 22 shutouts in 44 games in 28-29, a year in which his GAA was under 1.00.

I don't mind scarce scoring at all - just as long as hooking, holding and cheap shots aren't there. I like fast play too. The problem is that players are not only faster, but bigger. It's too crowded out there, players don't have the room to manoeuvre a well as they could, and a smaller playing field hurts play build-up.

while I can't confirm if the dead puck era was indeed on average (I'd liek to say it was slightly below average, but nothing like pre-Original Six), I'd agree witht he rest of this. Also I wonder how it would float if upgrading to the Olympic sized playing surface would fare? Always thought ti was kind of silly to have two different sized playing surfaces for the two main hockey incarnations.

Making the rink bigger is impractical because several arenas would need severe reconfiguration, which would cost a lot of money. If it's at all possible - for some it might not be. Plus, you have less seats, so the ticket prices would be higher in big markets.

The Ottawa Senators signed Ottawa native Randy Robitaille to a one-year contract.

Robitaille must clear waivers by noon ET Wednesday before being able to see game action with the Senators.

Released from his Russian team Yaroslavl Lokomotiv, Robitaille recorded three goals and six assists for nine points in 14 games.

The Sens become his 9th NHL team
