How does OOTP 5 compare to FOF4?
I haven't played OOTP since OOTP 3 and I have been disappointed by the console baseball games this year. I am a huge Front Office Football fan and would love to get a game that closely resembles it for baseball. I'm sure many of you here will tell me that OOTP is better than FOF and that is fine. Let me know why!

I was just wondering how it compared in terms of depth, accuracy etc etc. I was reading the features link and it looks very impressive; quite a step up from the OOTP3 days. Can someone embelish on this MANAGER/GM role playing?

Front Office Football is pretty comparable for the indepth stuff that OOTP5 has, although I would say that I like OOTP5 much better. I am more of a football fan than I am of baseball after the 94 strike but in FOF it's pretty much always the same. there is little that ever changes in the way that players develop and such.
The contracts in OOTP5 are no where near in depth as FOF but they are good none the less. If you really want the best BASEBALL sim out there go with OOTP. If you are looking for a Sim game that nails each season of baseball exactly as it was, don't. OOTP5 is the best becuase everytime you play it's just a little different. Hope this helps |

OOTP is very customizable, which is a big plus for me. I enjoyed FOF4, but it just left me wanting a bit more. I also prefer OOTP's interface and this year Markus redid the player algorithms so you'll be happy there, especially if you're coming from OOTP3. Hope that helps

What do you like about FOF?
Speaking from someone loves both games, OOTP and FOF, and even FOF:TCY, I'll give you my opinion.. As far as stats go...for me it is about a tie...pretty good in both cases but I've seen some things in both that make my eyebrows raise. FOF...gets the nod as far as financials. Mainly in part because the economics change in FOF by themselves. In OOTP, for the most part, excluding the tv contracts, you have to adjust them yourselves in OOTP.. As far as stats keeping goes....OOTP blows FOF away for me..especially V 5. As far as replayabilty and customizable options, again no contest, OOTP wins hands down... As far as fun goes...it is extremly close...but if could only keep one of them...I would choose OOTP for its replay value and the more modes and options it has in them. Both games are the only ones that never leave my hard drive...great job Markus and Jim. |

Agreed... FOF is fun but player development is nearly always the same... a guy is either a bust or develops to his potential within 2-3 years and there are so few late round/undrafted picks that develop and surprise. OOTP blows it out of the water, the PBP option in OOTP keeps me playing it whereas it isn't in FOF4.
FOF:TCY is another thing - probably one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played.

I have a very strong interest in TEXT based sports games.
Right now I have seasons going in OOTP5, FOF4 and TDCB. I play each game vs. simming. Each of the three has its plus/minus but, for that particular sport each does a great job. As one FOF4 player to another....if you like baseball get OOTP5! |

IMO,
OOTP has several big advantages over FOF: customization, record keeping, and multiplayer FOF has advantages in: single player AI and trade engine. Both games are very good but have different aims to some degree. I'd recommend OOTP to anyone who liked FOF. If you haven't played the game since OOTP3, you'll see vast improvements over 2 versions when compared to 2 versions of FOF.

OOTP5
I was a huge fan of both games, however I was very dissapointed in FOF4 after playing the heck out of the previous version. It could have been burnout or that I just didn't see a whole lot of difference in the new version. I have been playing OOTP5 a ton and will continue to do so through this year. I play in manager mode, with scouts, but when I'm done there, I may play a session without scouts, then possibly with financials turned off, where the players stay with the same team sometimes to retirement, like they did in the old days. Before OOTP5 came out, I was playing Tournament Dreams. FOF4 really took a back seat and I probably will not play it in September. Will wait for the software studios game.

For me... one of the biggest things I've prefered OOTP over FOF for is the interface. I have ALWAYS hated FOFs interface, its just a bear to work with. OOTP wins this hands doiwn, though quite a few people have trouble with legibility due to odd color combinations. You can alwasy try a different "skin" though.

FOF HAD great potential.
But after 4 editions I think it has a lot to be desired. For instance - the only season I finished with it their was a tie for a playoff spot and the WRONG team got into the playoffs. After four tries you would think they could get this right. Maybe the biggest thing wrong with the game it just does not feel like football.I am a hugh pro football fan but when play after play is a nice gain but ends up on the one yard line you know their is something goofy in the game model. To top it off the producer (Jim Gindren , or something) is not open to suggestions as is Marcus. He seems to think he knows a lot more about the game than he really does. Best I can say is that it tops the Mogul series. |

Ok guys thanks a lot for the suggestions. It's nice to see some familiar names I still recognize from this board a while back and the other forums I visit out there.
Here is my FINAL question: This may sound asinine, but what baseball game should I go with: OOTP4 or All-Star Baseball 2004 for PS2. Now, hear me out before you go off the deep end. I know what you all are thinking, "this guy would CONSIDER a console game over OOTP5??????" I don't have time for more than one or maybe two games at a time. I really want a baseball game to play along side FOF4. I bought All-Star Baseball for PS2 because I loved the game last year. 2004's version brings a big update, especially the attention to the offseason details (draft, rule 5 draft etc etc). I agree 100% that OOTP5 is a better game than ASB (for what each game is attempting respectively). However, my next question is this: Is it worth sacraficing a bit of realism and/or depth for actual gameplay? I love sim games, I think they are as real as it can get. No third party force interfering between the opponents. However, I also like to play my games once in a while. Can you guys see my case for an argument? Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be buying OOTP5 and playing it. I'm just looking for that reinforcement from you guys on my decision. Or am I wrong? I guess what I'm really asking is: Will OOTP5, and its ability to "watch-sim" my games, be enough to satisfy my fix for getting my hands dirty? |

jim did sell out and it was a huge mistake he refuses to let people add anything to his games - i could imagine how great the game might have been had the third party mod community been allowed to add to the game and yes, he is pompous |
