Question Slow Save and Load with Vista

I recently purchased a new laptop on which Vista is the operating system. Everything seems to run just fine until I try to save or load a game. I've noticed that the saving (and loading) seem to take far longer to save or load than under Windows 2000. The slow down is most noticeable when it gets to Messages. It takes as long to save or load the Messages section as it does to save or load the rest of a game. Under Windows 2000, a typical save might take at most a minute. With Vista, I've experienced as long as five minutes and sometimes longer depending upon how long I've been plaing the game. I'm not that familiar with Vista yet so I'm not sure if there's something I can do to speed up the save process.

Can anyone offer some suggestions?

try it with SuperFetch off. Sometimes this slows things down rather than speeds them up.

Can't see the Vista from here

Generally OOTP works with Vista BUT.............

Exactly what is your error message?

Is it from OOTP or VISTA?

During what process does the error occur?

Is your Vista an upgrade to an older computer or did it come pre-installed on a new computer?

What is your video card mfg and model?

What resolution are you running at?

Those answers should allow one to possibly perhaps maybe pinpoint your video challenge exactamundo.

OK I hope someone can help. This is a new computer. I haven't even had it a month. It was pre loaded with Vista. Here is the error I am recieving:

"ootp 2007.exe Fatal Application Exit"

"unable to open graphics. Make sure your sreen resolution is 1024*768 and that windows taskbar is not set to always remain on top."

I made sure the taskbar is not always on top. The resolution is higher than what it asks for, but even if I could reset my resolution would that affect my screen ?

This pops up right after I click on the Icon to have it load.

My laptop too is less than a month old and the model wasn't on the market a few months before that. So I'm assuming that the version of Vista is the most current. When I loaded the game, I had a window pop-up that asked me if I wanted to continue to load the program. Once I told it to proceed, the rest was relatively easy. I did have a little trouble with the license; but that was resolved relatively quickly.

My problem still exists though. I've turned off superfetch with no noticeable difference in the save speed. It's taking as long as 5 minutes to save a game, where under windows, even that oldest game I play never takes more than a minute. This is also true for loading games. Since I play two different games (usually a week in each one), this is more a point of frustration than anything else.

Could this have something to do with archiving? While I don't have a problem with deleting message files (once I've read them I rarely need to go back to them), the system simply creates new ones to take the place of the files I've deleted.

Again, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks

Which version of OOTP are you running?

I was having serious problems just like yours when I had the beta patch applied on my Vista laptop. When I patched the game upto version 2.0.2.53 (patch 2) it worked fine.

I have all the patches installed. As I said, it's more aggravating than anything. I've seen no noticeable changes otherwise. I've never used the Almanac and hoped that would do the trick but it didn't. It appears that the longer I've been playing a game, the longer it takes to save and load.

When I installed OOTP on my new laptop, I loaded all of the patches. I'm going to try reloading the patches this weekend and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the idea.

Are you right-clicking on desktop icon and then clicking "run as administrator"? I know several Vista users have solved the problem like that. Just a thought.

Good Thought. I'll try that tonight. It almost sounds too easy.

I know saving new games does not take nearly as long. I tried deleting old news texts; but, while that helped a little, the hang-up always seems to be in the messages.

I'll let you know tomorrow if it works.

Thanks for the tip.

I triedyour suggestiong last night. It worked great loading...about half the time; but saving still took forever. The game I've been plaing the longest took almost ten minutes. I've played nine seasons in tht one. This only seems to affect a game after I've played about half a season. It gets worse the longer I play it. I was setting up a new game and the save time was less than a minute.

I'll keept trying.

thanks.

I installed the patch over the weekend. It helped a little, mainly on the loading end of it. Saving still takes forever with ongoing games. The two games I play the most, one a current day histroical, the other a 60;s era I've only played one season in the current day; but I have played 8 seasons in the 60's game. Both take about 5 minutes to save.

I started a new game and I have only advanced to late January in the game. This one saves like the other two did on my old PC iwth Wndows 2000.

Nothing else seems to be affected...at least not enough to notice.

I also tried defragging the hard drive. No difference.

There is still no answer to this? My vista is doing the exact same thing..it takes FOREVER to save messages when i'm exiting out or loading a new league...or updating the league file for one of my online leagues...any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

This is clearly a problem limited to a few people's Vista settings in some way. It's difficult to troubleshoot without having those troubles one's self.

Try a series of different settings. Try disabling and enabling FaceGen. Try operating in both windowed and full screen mode. Try using different screen resolutions. I dunno. Do you have file indexing on? That might slow it down.

Mind you that the longer a saved game runs and the larger the amount of data a league has accumulated, the slower it will run.

In another thread, Tysok recommended disabling your virus scanner while saving to see if that fixes the problem.

Just an update from my end. I've tried a number of different settings. I've also turned everything off that didn't need to be on to keep the laptop running, including virus scan. I've simply learned to live with it. Hopefully, next year's version will not have the problem.
