2007 World Series prediction (two day poll)

Call it now, before the playoffs even start. Who wins it all this year? Poll will close in two days, so at most you will only have one playoff game for six of the eight teams to go on. Vote before the poll closes!

I'm picking the Red Sox to win because they seem like the best team to me (not that that matters too much in the postseason). But there are four teams I wouldn't mind seeing win for various reasons:

- The Phillies, because it makes the Mets' loss of the division to them seem less in vain (similar to the Mets' loss to the 1988 Dodgers in the playoffs).
- The Rockies, because it would be weird if the Rockies won. I never really thought of them as being in the hunt until near the end.
- The Cubs, because it is their turn.
- The Indians, because it's been a long time for them, too.

The other teams have all had recent victories, which makes potential victories for them much more boring.

Indians vs Cubs in the World Series would be nice.

I voted for the RedSox because even though I support them I believe that their all-round levels although not top of the pile in batting say are such that on their day they have enough to win the 11 games they need.

I like the idea of a Sox-Rox Series...

I would like to see the Yankees win.

1. The hating on them has now gone too far. Everyone hates them, so I have now decided to root for them.
2. I would like to see Alex Rodirquez and Bobby Abreu get rings.
3. It would stop this silly debate of whether Alex Rodriquez belongs in the Hall of Fame or not because he couldn't even win a ring with the Yankees.
4. I couldn't stand the people who said the Yankees were done when we were 2 months into the season.
5. Because now Red Sox fans have become more annoying than Yankee fans.

I'm going for the Indians. I'm a National League guy (Cardinals and Reds fan), but at the beginning of the season I expected none of the teams from the NL that we have left. It's been a long time for Cleveland, too.

I agree with you Jax on point 5. But I can't root for the Yankees, period. Unless it was against Bonds and the Giants, I can't root for them.

Point 2, I agree with a condition - that they are not Yankees at the time they get those rings.

Homer pick. Have to take the Phillies. Even if they lose, I'll bitterly disbelieve it til the end of time.

I will not pick a World Series winner that has won in this decade, because I think that streak will stay alive. The eliminates the Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, and Diamondbacks.

I also won't pick the Rockies or the Indians, because I am rooting for them and I never get what I want in sports.

That leaves the Cubs and the Phillies. I'll take the Phillies because some teams are just always going to be losers.

Rockies! Rockies! Rockies!

Well, that's who I'm rooting for, anyway. But my gut tells me it'll be the Yankees and to tell you the truth, I'd be perfectly happy with that. It's a class organization and the players act like professionals... unlike that certain rival from further north.

Well the sequence in the proper 21st century has been

2001 : NL West (D-Backs)
2002 : AL West (Angels)
2003 : NL East (Marlins)
2004 : AL East (Red Sox)
2005 : AL Central (White Sox)
2006 : NL Central (Cardinals)

and given that every division has won it once in the last 6 years, to keep that sequence going would have to be the NL West's turn and if we want a new team to win that would have to be the Rockies, hence why I'd like to meet them in the WS (but for them to come just so close but not enough)

I included 2000, just as you would include 1990 in the '90s, 1980 in the '80s, and so on.

But I like your thinking, minus what's in parentheses.

Angels! I say that as more than just a lifelong fan.

Here's how I see it:

Division Series

Yankees over Indians in 5 - Indians inexperience in the post-season coupled with the unrelenting lineup that the Yankees bring to the table will prove meaningful. Joe Torre is also in familiar territory and Jeter will find a way to make an impact when it counts. Joba Chamberlain is going to make his presence felt as well.

Angels over Red Sox in 5 - This series will go the full five as well. Matsuzaka will have to avoid having another bad outing or it could get worse for Sox. Lackey is a big game pitcher and this is when he's at his best. Becket will have to win game one because I think Matsuzaka gets rocked in game two before the series shifts to Anaheim, where the Angels don't lose much, regular or post-season.

Cubs over Diamondbacks in 4 - Cubs have better pitching. The D-backs have alllowed more runs this season than they scored. However, the D-backs could surprise because they have a lot of young players that can swing the bat against anyone. If Zambrano loses the opener, D-backs in 5. But that is unlikely.

Rockies over Phillies in 3 - Bold, I know. But heck, in the last 15 games the Rockies played, all of which were crucial must win games, they won 14 of them. Too hot right now...even for the 'Miracle' Phillies.

League Championship Series

Angels over Yankees in 6
- There's a first time for everything but not this time. Yankees just can't beat the Angels. Why? Mystic? Maybe. More likely it's due to the difference in the styles of play. Joe Torre's team depends on a multitude of high priced sluggers for that 'one swing of the bat'. If it doesn't come, the Yankees usually lose. While the Angels didn't score as many as the Yankees in the regular season, they rely on situational hitting coupled with aggressiveness at the plate and on the base paths with a little bit of Scoscia's National League flavor of managing. If the Yankees can figure out Angels pitching, the Yankees could take the series but more likely to have one or two games where they go ballistic and disappear the next day.

Rockies over Cubs in 7 - Hot streak has to end somewhere, right? Cubs pitching will certainly keep things close but I think in the end, we'll all be talking about the great defensive plays made by Rockies that saved this game or that. Regardless of the fact that they play 81 games in a high altitude, they still have Matt Holliday who can hit and Willy Taveras that can run. Cubs will need to get good outings from their middle relievers and avoid beating themselves. If they can do so, they could win this series easily because of their starting pitching. But more likely, Cubs fans will have their hopes dashed, yet again, by something fateful during game 7.

World Series

Angels over Rockies in 6 - Despite the Angels having much more depth than the Rockies, look for this to be an outstanding World Series with sparkling defensive plays by Orlando Cabrera, Gary Matthews Jr and just about anybody in a Colorado uniform. In the end, it will all come down to pitching, which is why I have the Angels winning their 2nd World Series.

Now let's see the games.

I agree with everything in this post except #5 for the simple reason that Red Sox fans have been much more annoying than Yankee fans for years now.

My homer pick is the Yankees of course. However, if they do lose, I gotta go with the Rockies. After what they did to even get a playoff spot, I'd love to see them carry it all the way.

I voted for the Indians. I'm not sure why, call it a gut feeling. -Kinda like when you eat bad seafood.
