Remembering the Hall of Famers: SP Jeremy Poss
Jeremy Poss:
The Nashville Predators rose to power in the mid-2020's, with 5 consecutive division titles from 2022 to 2026, and 4 World Series appearances(a victory in 2025). Starting pitcher Jeremy Poss was key figure in that era of success for Nashville. Poss was a second round draft pick by Harrisburg in 2014. Two years later, he was dealt to Rochester. Two years after that, he was traded to Nashville for start secondbaseman, Bill Criss. While the Predators wallowed in mediocrity that season, winning only 78 games, Poss saw an extended, and unimpressive, cup of coffee at the big league level. In 2019, Poss saw his numbers improve, but Nashville sunk to the bottom of the American League, losing 93 games. Poss took a leap forward in 2020, and Nashville improved to close to .500. While the Predators didn't improve much in 2021, Poss took a huge leap forward, winning 23 games and the Cy Young Award. The breakthrough year would be 2022. Poss remained an elite pitcher, and Nashville opened the wallets in free agency, shelling out over $30 million in contracts. The aggressiveness paid off, and the Predators survived a heated playoff race to win the division by one game. Though they swept aside Kansas City in the ALCS, Nashville was stopped cold in the World Series. Poss gave 9 runs in his lone World Series start. 2023 was much the same. The Predators cruised to a division title, reached the World Series, and fell short. Poss pitched well, but it wasn't enough. In 2024, a 103 win Nashville team was stunned by an 86 win Grand Rapids team in the ALCS. Poss had suffered through a somewhat disappointing season that year, and got blasted in two playoff starts. 2025 was a year of brilliance, both for Poss and for Nashville. Poss won 21 games in the regular season, and won 3 playoff games as Nashville won their first World Series since 2003. It was Poss on the mound for the deciding Game 5, which the Predators won 8-1. And then...even greater brilliance and a stunning trade. 2026 would be the greatest season of Poss' career, as he compiled 27 wins, 283 strikeouts, and posted a 2.24 ERA. But would it not come entirely with Nashville. At the trade deadline, Poss was dealt to Sacramento in exchange for start centerfielder Tod Tsukasa in a trade of future Hall of Famers. Sacramento was a decent team, but they would fall short of the playoffs by 5 games that year. Nashville reached the World Series, but fell in 4 games to Los Angeles. Poss was rewarded for ihs brilliance by winning his second Cy Young Award. The Sacramento Kings had been a perennial runner up in the West Division for many years, but in 2027, with Poss leading the way, they would win their first division title since 2015. They would also reach their first World Series since 2003, though they fell to Knoxville(who had beaten Nashville by one game to win the Southeast Division). The Kings would revert to their second place ways in the ensuing years, despite Poss' third Cy Young Award in 2029. In 20231, though, they returned to playoffs and reached the World Series, where, alas, they fell to Poss' old team, Nashville. Poss spent a few more years with the Kings, and then finished out his career with Tucson. At the time of his retirement, Poss ranked 17th in ERA, 2nd in Wins, second in Strikeouts, tied for 6th in Complete Games, and 2nd in Shutouts. It is probably safe to say that Poss was the second greatest pitcher in the first 20-30 years of the league's history(behind only Robert Jordan, of course). Today, Poss still ranks 5th all time in Wins, 7th in Strikeouts, and 7th in Shutouts. Poss' stats: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: LF Ernesto Morabito
Ernesto Morabito:
There are few Hall of Famers who could be said to be as weak a selection as Ernesto Morabito. Drafted by Hartford in the first round of the 2018 draft, Morabito moved quickly through the minor leagues, hitting for high averages, but displaying very little power and poor plate discipline. He reached the major leagues in 2020, and batted .342 in 111 at bats. His playing time increased over the next two seasons, but his performance was very weak. In 2023, he enjoyed somewhat of a breakout season, hitting .312 and making what would be the only All Star team of his career. Over the next few seasons, Morabito established himself as a guy who would hit for a very good average, and post decent doubles totals, but would not hit very many homeruns or draw many walks. He had 200 hit seasons in 2027 and 2029. In 2031, in the middle of his prime, something unexpected happened. Hartford signed one of the premiere left-fielders in the game, Roberto Torre, to a huge contract. Morabito was out of a starting job, and apparently, even a backup job. Surprisingly, Morabito accepted a demotion to AAA. There he played until, in the middle of July, Hartford traded him to Los Angeles for a couple of pitchers. The Dodgers immediately put him in their starting lineup and he remained a fixture in Los Angeles until 2036. Along the way, he won three Gold Glove Awards in left-field, and helped the Dodgers reach the postseason in 2034 and 2035. Morabito would finish his career with Memphis after being released by Los Angeles in early April of 2036. At the time of his retirement, Morabito ranked 21st all time in hits. When looking at his career, it quite obvious that he is a less than stellar entry in the Hall of Fame. As a hitter, he was completely one dimensional, and yet, it is questionable as to how good he really was at that dimension. After all, he did not win any batting titles, and only finished in the top 10 on five occasions. On the other hand, one could argue that, if not for that stint at AAA in the middle of his career, he would have finished around 2700-2800 hits. Does he look any better with those numbers? Remembering the Hall of Famers: CF Francisco Mattos

Emilio Fernandez wasn't the only great centerfielder to emerge as Micheal Bruce's career wound down in the late '10s and early '20s. With the 4th overall selection in the 2019 draft, San Diego selected Francisco Mattos. After splitting his first season between AA, AAA, and the big leagues, Mattos played regularly for the Padres in 2020. Shockingly, he was traded in July of 2021 to Knoxville. He would spend the rest of his career in Knoxville, and what a career it was! His first All Star season came in 2023. A year later, he had a 37 game hitting streak, which remains a Knoxville record today. In 2025, he began a stretch of 4 consecutive All Star seasons. In 2027, Knoxville knocked down the dominant power of the Southeast Division in that era, Nashville, and made the postseason for the first time in 10 years. A strong postseason performance from Mattos helped the 79ers to their first World Series victory since 2004. In 2028, Knoxville returned to the World Series, and despite a tremendous effort from Mattos(1.271 OPS, 6 HR, and 26 RBI in the playoffs), the 79ers fell to the Dodgers in one of the greatest World Series of all time. The series went to seven games, and all but two of the games were decided by 2 or fewer runs. Knoxville remained a strong team into the early '30s, reaching and losing the 2030 World Series. But as Mattos' career came to a close, so too did the success of the 79ers. Reaching 3,000 hits in 2036 was only a brief respite from a last place season for Knoxville. Likewise for Mattos' 500th homerun in 2037 as Knoxville sunk to the bottom of all of baseball, losing 103 games(a franchise worst at the time). Remembering the Hall of Famers: 1B Pierre Sanchez
Pierre Sanchez:
We come now to the last of the Hall of Famers who established themselves in the years 2013-2022. Pierre Sanchez was the first overall pick in the 2017 draft, taken by Hartford. By 2019, Sanchez had entrenched himself as Hartford's starting 1B. He had quality seasons in 2020, '21, and '22, displaying solid doubles and homerun power, and good batting average skills. But Hartford in those days tended to be a mediocre team, and when Sanchez hit the free agent market, he headed for a Nashville team that seemed to be on the rise, having just lost the World Series in 2022. It would be a match made in heaven. Sanchez made his first All Star team in 2023, and wouldn't miss the midsummer classic again until 2037. Nashville, meanwhile, made their second straight World Series appearance, but lost again, though not due to any nonperformance by Sanchez- he slugged .711 in the playoffs. As the '20s progressed, Sanchez's numbers began to rise dramatically. His doubles totals rose from 40 per year to 50 per year, and occasionally higher. His homerun totals jumped from the mid-20's into the 30's, and occasionally higher. Once an occasional .300 hitter, it became an annual accomplishment. He reduced his strikeout totals to almost unbelieably low numbers. More homeruns than strikeouts became the norm. Nashville benefited greatly from Sanchez's exploits, winning the division in each of the first 4 years of Sanchez's tenure, and again in 2029, 2031, 2034, and 2036. In 2025 and 2031, they won the World Series. In addition to 2023, they also reached and lost the '26, '34, and '36 World Series. Sanchez had become one of the greatest players in the league during the '20s and '30s. He won the Silver Slugger in 2027 and 2032. Both years, he led in two of the three Triple Crown categories, missing out in 2027 by .010 batting average points, and in 2032 by 18 homeruns. His 157 runs scored in 2027 remains a league record today. In 2032, his 70 doubles set a single season league record that went unmatched until Green Bay's Harry Bassett tied it in 2081. Both the 157 runs scored and 70 doubles are Nashville team records, as are his 235 hits in 2032. Interestingly enough, both his 3,000th hit(2034) and his 500th homerun(2035) came off of the same pitcher: Knoxville's George Saez. Saez was a pretty bad relief pitcher who had 7+ ERA's in both of those seasons. In 2036, Sanchez passed Hector Abad to become the all time hit leader. He, and two other players, also passed Cody Newport to move atop the all time doubles list. In 2037, Sanchez passed Abad to become the all time RBI leader. When Sanchez ended his career following the 2038 season, he ranked 1st all time in hits, 10th in homeruns, 1st in RBI, 2nd in doubles(he had been passed up that season), 5th in triples, and 2nd in runs scored. He was passed up on the RBI list the following season, but remained the all time hit leader until being passed in the 2053 season. Today, Sanchez ranks 4th all time in hits, 8th in RBIs, 3rd in doubles, 9th in triples, and 3rd in runs scored. Truly, I think, Pierre Sanchez was one of the all time greats. Sanchez's stats: Code:

In some ways, I think of this as one of the most interesting eras of the league. It includes the famed 2023 draft, which produced 7 Hall of Famers in the first round. No other draft has been as productive. As well, the players who established themselves in this era were largely at their peak productivity in the late '20s and early to mid-30s. This is significant because run scoring around the league began rising rapidly in the late '20s until peaking in the early '30s. The peaks established in this time period remain the highest that the league has ever seen, though the late '70s came close to matching those numbers.

Tomas Sato went 5 for 6, with a double, a homerun, and 9 RBI in the 18-1 rout. He also scored 2 runs. After sweeping Green Bay, Denver ran into a little trouble with Knoxville, losing a couple of close games. They salvaged the third game of the series with the aid of Ellis Bolling. Bolling blasted three homeruns in the game, and drove in 6 runs altogether in the 13-4 stomping. The Broncos finished up the week by opening a series against Miami with a win. Bolling went the entire month of June without hitting a homerun. En route to winning AL Player of the Week, however, he went 13 for 28, with 8 homeruns this past week. He also doubled twice, drove in 17 runs, and scored 11 runs. Sato's 9 RBI game wasn't his only contribution during the week. Overall, he went 14 for 28, with a double, 2 homeruns, and 15 RBI. Russell Thomas added some offense, as well, going 11 for 29, with a double, a homer, 7 walks, and 9 runs scored. On the pitching side of things, Kenny Pillsbury went 2-0 in 2 starts, posted a 3.00 ERA, and had a 15/1 K/BB ratio in 15 innings pitched, while Ray Lockridge went 2-0 in 2 starts, with a 2.51 ERA, and a 17/1 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings pitched. Remembering the Hall of Famers: LF Greg Dos Santos
Greg Dos Santos:
Little did anyone know just how prolific the 2023 draft would turn out to be. Of the 16 players taken in the first round of the amateur draft, 7 would wind up in the Hall of Fame. No other draft has come close. The 10th overall selection in that draft was Greg Dos Santos, taken by Sacramento. By 2025, Dos Santos had established himself as Sacramento's everyday left-fielder, and an elite power threat, finishing second in the league with 41 homeruns. The development of Dos Santos would also bring good fortune to the Sacramento franchise. From 2020 to 2026, the Kings finished in second place six times, and third place once. In 2027, Dos Santos' third season as the starting left-fielder, Sacramento won their first division title since 2015. They would lose the World Series that year to Knoxville. After Scott Border's fifth, and final, 60+ homerun season in 2010, such a feat became an unheard of accomplishment for almost 20 years. Starting in 2028, however, a flurry of players would join what was previously a club of just two(Border and Anselmo Maldonado, who accomplished the feat in 2006). From 2028 to 2042, 7 different players produced 60+ HR seasons. The second of those players to achieve this was Dos Santos in 2029, with 62 longballs. Amazingly, Dos Santos was neither an All Star nor the Silver Slugger winner in such an amazing season. After an injury cost him about 2 1/2 months of the 2030 season, Dos Santos produced the third best OPS of his career and helped lead Sacramento to another World Series appearance. Once again, however, they lost, this time to Nashville. After the 2031 season, Dos Santos left Sacramento and signed with Washington, to give the Senators an all (future) Hall of Fame outfield, which included, in addition to Dos Santos, CF Tod Tsukasa and RF Jason Dockins. Would such an impressive collection of talent lead to a playoff spot for Washington? No. The Senators missed the playoffs for the 19th consecutive season in 2032, and finished tied for last place with Atlanta with a record of 77-85. 2033 wasn't much better, as Washington won only 76 games. Dos Santos would hit 50 HR for the 5th time in his career in 2034, and Washington managed 84 wins, which was only good for 3rd place in the division. In 2035, Washington's playoff-less streak came to an end, as they won the division with 86 wins. The Senators rallied from being down 2 games to 1 to a 97 win Tucson team in the ALCS. They won three straight games by one run apiece to win the series in 6 games. Of those games, one was a 15 inning marathon and another a 10 inning game. And so, a tired underdog limped into the World Series against the defending champion, Pittsubrgh. Most expected the 115 win Pirates to blow the Senators away. Well, they sort of did. It was a 4 game sweep, at least. But by no means were the Senators overmatched. Through 6 innings in Game One, the Senators led 4-1. But they couldn't hang on. Pittsburgh picked up a run in the 7th, 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th(back to back homeruns to start the inning), and 1 run in the 10th inning to win the game. In Game Two, the Senators banged out 12 hits, but were kept off the scoreboard until the 9th inning in a 4-2 defeat. Game Three was the only game that Washington looked outclassed, getting trounced 11-2. At that point, many expected the Senators to lay down in the 4th game. After Pittsburgh struck for 4 runs in the first inning, it certainly seemed as though that would be the case. But it was a solo homerun by Dos Santos in the 2nd inning that sparked the Senators into not going down without a fight. Pittsburgh led 5-1 after 4 innings, and 8-2 after the top of the 6th inning. The Senators rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th, cutting the deficit to just 1 run. The Pirates pulled away again, however, to clinch the series with a 10-7 victory. Even while getting swept, though, it was considered a gutty performance for Washington. Alas for Greg Dos Santos, that would be his last shot at a World Series. The Senators slumped to 73 wins the following season. Then, in 2037, Dos Santos was traded to a last place Los Angeles team. 2038 would be his last season. At the time of his retirement, he ranked 8th all time in homeruns. He was still in the top 25 as recently as 2077. He still holds Sacramento's single season HR record, with 62. Remembering the Hall of Famers: LF Juan Lantigua
Juan Lantigua:
The first overall selection in the famed 2023 draft was Juan Lantigua, taken by Tucson. The Diamondbacks had spent most of the 2010's struggling to get out of last place, and things hadn't changed much as the '20s began. To get the first overall pick in 2023, Tucson had paced baseball with 108 losses the year before. Thus, it wasn't hard for Lantigua to find a regular spot in the Tucson lineup in his first professional season. The 21 year old Lantigua held his own at the big league level, showing a little bit of pop and respectable plate discipline. Even so, Tucson once again finished with the worst record in baseball, losing 104 games. It would get worse before it got better for Tucson. Even as Lantigua enjoyed a .300 season with 20 HR, 91 RBI, and 87 walks, the Diamondbacks set a record for futility that wouldn't be matched until the league expanded 14 years later, losing an embarassing 114 games in 2024. Although Tucson rebounded to win 75 games in 2025, the season represented a setback for Lantigua. His numbers dropped off from the previous season and then, in late July, he suffered a broken foot that knocked him out for the remainder of the season. 2026 was a breakthrough year for both Lantigua and the Tucson Diamondbacks. Lantigua broke out with a .323/.410/.521/.931 season, belting 27 homeruns and driving in 94 runs. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks won 87 games and made the playoffs for the first time in 20 years. Although they were easily beaten in the ALCS by Nashville in 5 games, Tucson was determined not to be a one year wonder. Lantigua OPS'ed .904 and drove in 100 runs for the first time in his career in 2027 as the Diamondbacks survived a tight division race with Memphis, beating out the Grizzlies by two games in the Central Division. Once again, however, the Diamondbacks fell in the ALCS, this time losing to Knoxville in 6 games. In 2028, Lantigua OPS'ed .921 and drove in 100 runs for the second straight year. Additionally, he made the first All Star team of his career. The Diamondbacks won their third straight division title, despite finishing barely over .500, with only 83 wins. But the end result was the same. Also for the third straight year, Tucson fell in the ALCS. They took Knoxville to 7 games this time. Lantigua left Tucson after the 2028 season and headed to the National League to play for Portland. After a run of dominance in the early '20s(6 straight division titles and a World Series victory in 2024), the Trailblazers had sunk into mediocrity as the decade came to a close. After one mediocre season in 2029, Portland imploded, losing 109 and 106 games in the following years. Lantigua didn't stick around any longer, as the worst season of his career in 2030 caused the fans in Portland to turn on him. He jumped ship for Rochester, perennial bridesmaid in the Northeast. The Rhinos won 93 games, second most in franchise history at the time, with Lantigua on board. But it wasn't good enough for first place in what would prove to be one of the strangest seasons in league history(Note: I plan to write a little more on this season in the near future. Ideally, to coincide with the current season's postseason, as it would be the 50th anniversary of the events that transpired). Little changed over the next several seasons. Rochester posted winning records every year until 2036, but failed to make the postseason in any of them. Lantigua made three All Star teams in his Rochester tenure, and won a batting title in 2035. In 2038, Lantigua was dealt to the expansion Miami Dolphins, who were in the process of shattering Tucson's previous record for futility(as it was, 3 of the 4 expansion teams broke Tucson's record of 114 losses, and Miami was the worst of the worst, with 131 losses). In 2039, he signed with the second year San Jose Sharks, but didn't last the season with them, bringing his career to a close. Lantigua is perhaps not the greatest of Hall of Famers. More likely, he belongs in the Hall of Very Good. At the time of his retirement, he ranked 21st all time in hits and 22nd in runs scored. Lantigua's stats: Code:

They swept a three game series from Washington, and won two extra inning games, including a 17 inning marathon with Miami (I'll provide the boxscore in another post). Ellis Bolling reverted to hitting doubles this week, going 13 for 33, with 9 doubles(but no homeruns), and 8 RBI. Lee Chappel was 6 for 20, with 8 walks, 1 HR, 3 RBI, and 6 runs scored. Mark Bakke was 7 for 16, with a double, a homerun, and 3 RBI. Armando Navarro was 6 for 12, with 4 doubles, 4 RBI, and 4 runs scored. Alexis Bazquez went 9 for 29, with 3 doubles, 1 HR, and 5 runs batted in. On the pitching side, Robert McNett made 2 starts and went 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA. One additional note on Ellis Bolling: Last week's 3 HR games was the 6th of his career. This ties him with Hall of Fame 3B Howard Kinch with the most 3 HR games in a career. Edmond Mcgurk was injured in a collision at home plate.
Denver's Robert McNett and Miami's Joseph Brashears were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the 7th inning, when future Hall of Fame CF Ulises Menendez, who had 3 hits in the game, drove in backup C Edmond McGurk, who was spelling usual starter Jake Foss, to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead. Despite the fact that Brashears was throwing a shutout, he was near his limit at over 100 pitches, and clinging to a 1-0 lead, Miami turned to their bullpen. George Carolan is the Dolphins' most trusted reliever and he came on to replace Brashears. In the 9th inning, things fell apart for Miami. Lee Chappel, who had 4 hits in the game, reached base. Ellis Bolling followed with one of his three doubles, and Chappel came crashing into home plate, barreling into McGurk. Chappel scored the tying run, and to add injury to insult, McGurk had to leave the game. The respective bullpens of Denver and Miami proceeded to engage in a pitcher's duel of their own. Carolan finished the inning without further incident, and then tossed 2 1/3 more scoreless innings. Lefty James Seder came in and pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings of his own. On Denver's side, James Virgen replaced McNett in the 8th inning and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Ramon Gomez came in and whiffed 4 batters in 2 1/3 innings. Finally Leo Salguero came in and retired the Dolphins in the 15th and 16th innings to set the stage for the 17th, and deciding inning. Miami left-hander Chad Helton combined ineffective pitching and the Dolphins' shaky fielding to surrender 3 runs(only 1 earned), 2 of which came from Bolling's third double of the game. Salguero finished off the Dolphins in the bottom of the 17th inning to cap a 4-1 Broncos' victory. Chappel and Bolling combined for 7 hits, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored. Miami SS and leadoff hitter, Bill Tovar, managed to go 0 for 8 in the contest. Miami committed 5 errors in the contest, including two apiece by 1B Gabriel Esqueda(admittedly not his natural position, which is catcher) and 3B Thomas Fuentes, Jr.(known for having good range but also being erratic).

Remembering the Hall of Famers: CF Eduardo Rodas
Eduardo Rodas:
When Pittsburgh's Hall of Fame centerfielder Micheal Bruce retired following the 2022 season, it was time to look for a replacement. Of course, no player could truly replace such a legend, but Eduardo Rodas would come pretty close. When the 2023 season began, Pittsburgh attempted to fill the CF vacancy with outfielder Steve Nuckols. Nuckols, though a solid player, was miscast as a starting centerfielder. Pittsburgh's GM then turned his attention to a 23 year old outfielder playing for Tucson. This outfielder had been a 3rd round pick by Washington in 2018 and was later traded to Tucson in 2019. He had an uninspiring cup of coffee in 2022, and was off to a slow start in 2023, hitting just .224 through one month of play. It was no surprise, then, that Pittsburgh's fans were stunned when it was announced that 17 game winner James Tillmon, still very much in his prime at 29 years of age, had been traded for a struggling young prospect named Eduardo Rodas. By the time the season was finished, Pittsburgh's fans were willing to give the young Rodas the benefit of the doubt. He was inconsistent as a rookie, but showed quite a bit of promise, and more than held his own in the playoffs as Pittsburgh rolled to a World Series victory over Nashville. Rodas' skills developed quickly. He lashed double after double. He wore down pitchers with his excellent batting eye. When he reached base, he proved to be a nuisance for pitchers. As a catalyst for the Pittsburgh offense, Rodas was superb. He would go on to win 4 Gold Glove Awards in centerfield. Despite this, and despite Pittsburgh's constant success, World Series victories failed to come after the 2023 season. The Pirates reached the World Series in 2025, 2029, and 2032, but were defeated each time. Rodas earned a reputation for being a "choker" after tending to peform poorly in the postseason year after year. Finally, in 2033, the Pirates retook their "rightful place" atop the baseball world, beating Tucson. With that, Pittsburgh unleashed their full fury on baseball. Following the '33 championship, the Pirates ripped off World Series victories in '34, '35, and '36. Rodas was an on base machine in those postseason runs, twice posting .500+ OBP. After the streak of championships was snapped in 2037, Pittsburgh returned to the top in Rodas' final season in 2039. By then, however, Rodas had given way to his own replacement, Francisco Lorenz. At the time of his retirement, Rodas ranked 15th all time in doubles, 20th in walks, 20th in runs scored, and 20th in stolen bases. Rodas' stats: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: RF Jason Dockins
Jason Dockins:
Rightfielder Jason Dockins was the third of the 2023 draftees to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Drafted by Harrisburg 5th overall in '23, Dockins spent a year in the minor leagues and had a respectable 40 at bat cup of coffee in the big leagues. In 2024, he stepped into Harrisburg's starting lineup and immediately made his mark. After hitting .302 with 40 doubles and 22 homers, he was named the NL Rookie of the Year. Dockins soon established himself as a dangerous run producer with both double and homerun power, while also being a great hitter for average, despite rather high strikeout rates. But though Dockins enjoyed personal success, Harrisburg struggled to rise above mediocrity. Even in 2028, when the Capitals managed their first winning season in 10 years, it was just barely. They squeaked out an 82-80 record and finished in third place. In 2029, Dockins left Harrisburg and headed to Washington as part of the Senators attempt to buy themselves a championship. Washington spent almost $23 million combined on Dockins and CF Tod Tsukasa. It almost paid off. Washington jumped from 71 wins in 2028 to 90 wins in 2029, but finished in second place, 2 games back of Nashville. The Senators remained good, but good enough, in 2030. They again finished in second place. In 2031, Dockins won the Silver Slugger Award, carrying Washington to a 93 win season. It was only good enough for third place, as Nashville won 98 games and Knoxville won 96 games. In 2032, the Senators increased their payroll to the second highest in all of baseball, adding a third future Hall of Famer to their outfield in Greg Dos Santos. They proceeded to finish in last place with 77 wins. Over the next several seasons, Washington's payroll began to drop. By the time 2035 rolled around, the Senators' payroll ranked just 9th out of 16 teams. So naturally, they won the division with 86 wins and reached the World Series, where they were defeated by Pittsburgh. It was a brief moment of success for Washington. Never again in Dockins' career did the Senators make the playoffs. In fact, they wouldn't play in the postseason again until 2067. When Dockins' career came to a close, he ranked 15th all time in hits, and 23rd in RBI. He remained in the top 25 in hits until the 2063 season. Dockins' stats: Code:

The bats then went cold for a game against Charlotte, then quickly woke up again, and Denver took 2 of 3. But the week ended on a down note, as the Broncos were shut down in Nashville. Russell Thomas was a sparkplug for the offense, going 12 for 25, with 5 RBI, 7 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases. And as they have so often this season, Ellis Bolling and Alexis Vazquez were the primary hammers in the lineup. Bolling was 7 for 25, with 1 double, 4 round-trippers, 8 RBI, and 7 runs scored, while Vazquez was 14 for 25, with a double, 4 homers, 11 runs batted in, and 7 runs scored. Thanks for the kind words. It's good to know I have at least one reader. I agree that this year may be the year. This may be the best starting rotation that Denver has ever had. That's the one thing that I think has held them back, especially when they go up against teams like Miami and Tucson, who traditionally have had very good pitching. But Pillsbury has been a horse this year, and Lockridge gives them an excellent number 2. Throw in a bullpen that has been much better than last year, even if it still isn't that great, and I think this is a team that can win some close games. The other thing that will help, I think, is a more comfortable playoff race. Last year was a fight just to get to the playoffs, and this year, they have a solid, if not commanding lead in the division, and might even be able to rest guys down the stretch a little bit. The downside is the long term future for Denver. The minor league system is, to be blunt, barren. And most of the core group of hitters and pitchers are already in their thirties. Time is running out for this generation of Broncos.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: CF Benjamin Middlebrook
Benjamin Middlebrook:
At last we come to the owner of the Denver Broncos, Benjamin Middlebrook. Middlebrook was a second round selection by Rochester in 2019. He spent his first several seasons working his way up Rochester's minor league system, while making cups of coffee in the big leagues in each year from 2019 to 2021. In 2022, Middlebrook forced his way into Rochester's starting lineup, finishing third in the batting race with a .341 average. Middlebrook made his first All Star team in 2023, and challenged once again for the batting title, this time finishing second with a .350 average. In '25, Middlebrook headed to Atlanta where he made three consecutive All Star teams. The Braves' performance dropped sharply in Middlebrook's three years there. His first year, they won 91 games and finished in second place. His second year, Atlanta slumped to 81 wins and finished in last place. His third year, they remained in last place, and no longer kept up a pretense at being competitive, losing a league worst 101 games. Middlebrook left Atlanta after 2027 and signed with defending NL champion, Sacramento. He lasted less than two weeks into the season, when the Kings abruptly traded him to Hartford for three prospects. Middlebrook responded with the second best season of his career to that point, setting a career high in hits, and what were career highs at the time in both homeruns and RBIs. Interestingly, both Sacramento and Hartford finished with identical 80-82 records that year. However, the Kings finished in second place, only 6 games out of first, while the Whalers finished in last place, 23 games out. As Hartford continued to hover around mediocrity, Middlebrook's numbers began to drop off. In 2029, he posted his first sub-.800 OPS season since 2025. At the end of May, 2031, the Whalers, who had earlier demoted their starting left fielder, Ernesto Morabito, to the minors in place of free agent Roberto Torre, acquired 25 year old centerfielder, Reginald Allbritton, in a trade, effectively pushing Middlebrook to the bench. He wound up having the worst season of his career to that point. An angry Middlebrook then signed with Hartford's Northeast Division rival, Harrisburg, in 2032. But after a disastrous month of April, Middlebrook was again forced to pack his bags. The Capitals dealt him to Memphis for a veteran closer, and two prospects, one of them a 20 year old starting pitcher by the name of Walter Macias. Macias' name will come up in the future. This trade may have changed Middlebrook's career forever. Though his days as a journeyman were not yet over, the downward path that his career seemed to be taking was reversed. Middlebrook, then 35 years old, would be one of the main leaders on a Grizzlies team that pulled off the biggest upset in league history. I mentioned that I plan to write more on this season in a separate piece very soon, and I still do, but to give a brief explanation: Memphis was one of two teams to win their division that year with a losing record. The Grizzlies were a less than spectacular 78-84, but that was good enough to win the Central Division by three games(meanwhile, in the NL West, Sacramento went 79-83 to win the division by 4 games). A team with a losing record winning its division was not an unheard of event; Memphis had actually won the division the year before with only 79 wins, and it occurred on a few other occasions, as well. What happened next, however, was shocking. Memphis, a team with the worst offense in the American League(third worst in all of baseball), swept 100-win Knoxville(best pitching in the American League) in the ALCS. Then, in the World Series, the Grizzlies stunned 114-win Pittsburgh in 5 games to capture the championship. Memphis had previously reached 4 World Series, all against Pittsburgh, and had lost all of them. Memphis was neither the first, nor the last, team to win its division with a losing record. They were, however, the first to even reach the World Series, and the only to actually win the damn thing! What is this, Hollywood? Middlebrook, by the way, was instrumental to Memphis' victory, putting up a 1.044 OPS, with 9 runs batted in. After Pittsburgh won a 10-8 Game 1 slugfest, Middlebrook blasted a first inning, two run homer in Game 2, triggering a 7-1 Memphis victory. He was a key part of a 7th inning rally in Game 3, in which the Grizzlies prevailed 6-4. The final two games were surprsingly easy victories for Memphis, 8-2 and 7-2. Although Memphis slumped to second place in 2033, Middlebrook had one of the best seasons of his career. He was named to his 4th All Star team, had the 4th 200 hit season of his career, and set a career high with 130 runs scored. The Grizzlies bounced back in 2034, and won the division with 97 wins(the best record in franchise history at the time). Alas, Middlebrook was not around to enjoy it. Early in the year, he was traded to Atlanta, who would finish in last place. Despite that, he posted the first 100 RBI season of his career. In 2035, Middlebrook was again traded, this time to Nashville(and for the second time in his career, it would be for a future Hall of Fame starting pitcher- Robert McComas), and his numbers dropped sharply. His OPS plunged to .688- the second worst of his career. And when a guy who is 38 years old has a season like that, it seems obvious that it's the end of the line for him. Or not. At 39 years of age, Benjamin Middlebrook exploded with a career year, setting career highs in doubles(42), homeruns(34), RBI(136), and OPS(.931). He made his 5th All Star team that year. And for the second time in his career, Middlebrook would lead a team with a losing record all the way to the World Series. Nashville won the Southeast Division with just 76 wins and knocked off 101-win Tucson in the ALCS, 4 games to 1. Middlebrook's magic would not continue, however. Back in 2032, Pittsburgh's manager, John Clark, had been in his first season as a manager. Maybe he was overconfident then. Maybe he took the Cinderella Memphis team lightly. Whatever it was in 2032, it was not so in 2036. Clark had learned his lesson, and Pittsburgh had won every World Series since then. Nashville played competitively, it is true. But in the end, experience and measured confidence will tend to overcome pure pluckiness more often than not. Oh yeah, superior talent usually helps, too. The Predators threw a scare in Game 1, grabbing an early 4-1 lead after one inning, and then rallying to take a 7-6 lead(on a Middlebrook homerun) into the 8th inning. But Pittsburgh got excellent relief pitching- 6 innings of 2-hit, 0-run ball- and came up with timely hits to tie the game in 8th and win the game in the 11th. Pittsburgh's Joel Antunez threw a 6 hit shutout in Game 2, and Pittsburgh won 5-0. Middlebrook had 3 hits and an RBI in the Predators only win in the series: a 7-6, 10 inning affair in Game 3, in which Nashville battered Pittsburgh's ace, Manuel Reno, for four runs in 7 innings. In Game 4, Nashville was held to 3 hits in a 4-1 defeat. That set the stage for a wild, series clinching Game 5. After 3 innings, Nashville led 3-1. The game was tied by Pittsburgh in the 4th inning, but then the Predators busted out with 5 runs in the top of the 5th inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Pirates cut Nashville's lead to 8-6. In the 6th inning, Pittsburgh rallied to take an 11-8 lead. The Predators managed 1 run in the ninth inning, but fell, 11-9. Middlebrook had 2 hits, 1 RBI, and 1 R in the contest. Middlebrook stuck around for another season in Nashville, but the Predaors fell to a distant third place. And then came 2038. For the first time in league history, expansion would take place. Being added to the league were San Jose, Buffalo, Miami, and yes, the Denver Broncos. And it was with Denver that the 41 year old Middlebrook would sign with. With Middlebrook nearing 3,000 hits, it was a move that Denver figured would create a splash near the end of what was sure to be a dismal first season. And for Denver, it certainly was dismal, though not quite as dismal as their expansion brethren. The Broncos managed to finish with the best record of the four expansion teams, with a whopping 51 wins. But sure enough, in a game in early September, Benjamin Middlebrook became the 8th player in league history to reach 3,000 hits. Middlebrook hung on for one more year, spending the 2039 season with Los Angeles. At the time of his retirement, Middlebrook ranked 8th in hits, and 24th in runs scored. After ending last week with a loss to the Predators, they opened this week with another loss to them, before salvaging the final game of the series. Then they headed to Tucson, hoping to increase the gap between them and their archrival. Instead, they had to settle for just maintaining the status quo, as they split the four game series. They ended the week on a high note, however, opening a series with Memphis with a win. Ellis Bolling went just 6 for 24, but belted a double and three homeruns, while collecting 5 RBI and runs scored apiece. Bolling was also named the American League Batter of the Month for the month of July. It was the 6th BotM of his career, and what a month it was for Bolling. He batted .370/.400/.944/1.344, with 14 doubles, 16 homeruns, 43 runs batted in, and 28 runs scored. Bolling currently leads the American League with 58 doubles and 126 RBI. Alexis Vazquez was 7 for 22, with a double and a homer, and 6 RBI. Lee Chappel went 9 for 25, with 5 doubles, 1 homerun, 6 RBI, and 5 runs scored. On the pitching side, Ray Lockridge picked up 2 wins with a 2.08 ERA. George Buentello made two starts, and picked up 1 win with a 2.40 ERA. Robert McNett won his only start, surrendering 3 runs in 7 innings, while striking out 11 batters. The trade deadline came and went with no action from Denver GM John Mounts. In fact, there was little activity around league as a whole. Unlike a year ago, when the heated three way race between Denver, Tucson, and Memphis led to a fairly active deadline, the wider gap within the division this year likely led to fewer trades. Next up: The standings through the first week of August.

It's been a long time since a team with a losing record has made the postseason. Offhand, I don't think that it's happened since the first expansion in 2038, but I'll have to check on that. Anyways, it could very well happen this season. It's weird how, aside from Denver, Miami, and Tucson, the entire American League is best described as mediocre. Nobody's really bad, like Green Bay last year, and there aren't any "decent" teams, like you see in the National League. Denver, meanwhile, has opened up a little more ground on Tucson. They led by 5 games a month ago, now it's 8 games. Still close enough for Tucson to come back, of course, but it's at least a comfortable lead as we head into the dog days of summer.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: LF Agustin Rivas
Agustin Rivas:
This next Hall of Famer was one of the great walk drawers in league history. In 2021, Harrisburg made Agustin Rivas the third overall player taken in the amateur draft. He spent his first professional season absolutely demolishing both AA and AAA pitching, posting a greater than .500 OBP at both levels. He was in for a rude awakening, however, in his major league cup of coffee, collecting only 6 hits in 40 at bats. Despite his initial struggles, however, the switch-hitting Rivas found his way into the starting lineup in 2022, and showed promise of his ability, posting a very solid .368 OBP, while lashing 36 doubles. Rivas took another step forward in 2023, improving his batting average by almost 30 points, while maintaining solid power and good plate discipline. Unfortunately, his Harrisburg team was going in the opposite direction as Rivas' skills. They sunk to the bottom of the National League in '23, losing 100 games. 2024 wasn't any better. Even as Rivas took yet another leap forward, hitting over 40 doubles and 20 homeruns and being named to his first All Star team, the Capitals dipped to 57-104. Amazingly, they were only the third worst team in baseball that year, as Los Angeles and Tucson were even worse. Rivas made his second All Star team, and batted over .300 for the first time in 2025, while Harrisburg reached mediocrity, winning 78 games. Rivas would spend only one more season with the Capitals, and after the 2026 season, he signed with division rival, Rochester. Rivas' batting average skills would take off with the Rhinos, and he finished second in the batting race in 2027. He then won back to back batting titles in '28 and '29, but despite his efforts, Rochester failed to alter their second fiddle status to the dominant Pittsburgh team of the time, as they finished in second place behind the Pirates in all four seasons that Rivas spent with them. In 2031, Rivas returned to Harrisburg. The Capitals continued to struggle until 2034, when they won 94 games(but finished in second place). Rivas won his third batting title and was named to his fourth All Star team that year. Ever the optimistic sort regarding pulling teams out of the basement, Rivas headed to Portland in 2035. Portland had just completed a league worst, 106 loss season. His efforts, however, were unsuccessful, and in 2037 he was dealt to Washington in a deadline deal. This finally gave him a legitimate chance at playing on a playoff team. Unfortunately for Rivas, the Senators finished 2 games back of Atlanta in the Southeast Division race. Washington again finished 2 games out in 2038. In '39, he was released by Washington and signed with the second year Buffalo Bills. His final season would be 2040. At the time of his retirement, Rivas ranked 23rd all time in hits, 11th in doubles, and 3rd in walks. Today, Rivas ranks 22nd all time in doubles, and 8th all time in walks. Rivas' stats: Code:
