Josh Fogg vs. Jake Peavy?

I know Peavy is pitching, assuming it's Fogg.

Okay, so here's how the tournament begins. I think I've got this right...

Mon., 10/1 Padres at Rockies, to decide NL wild card
Wed., 10/3 Angels at Red Sox
Wed., 10/3 NL wild card at Phillies
Wed., 10/3 Cubs at D'backs
Thu., 10/4 Yankees at Indians, plus NL series continue

The Monday game is scheduled for back-east TV prime time, of course. I don't see official start times for the others yet.

And by the way...

It turns out that the '95 Angels had a six-game lead on Sept. 4 that year.
This year's Mets held a seven-game lead eight days later in the season!

Here's a handy little chart:

Date Team Lead
Sept. 12, 2007 New York Mets 7
Sept. 1, 1938 Pittsburgh Pirates 7
Sept. 6, 1934 New York Giants 7
Sept. 4, 1995 California Angels 6
Sept. 20, 1964 Philadelphia Phillies 6
Sept. 8, 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers 6

The error here has already been documented.

The error here, however, has not been pointed out. With four of the five teams in the division finishing above .500 and each of those four teams having a legitimate shot at the playoffs going into the final two weeks of the season, the NL West is not a weak division. In actuality, it's the strongest and most competitive division in the NL.

I agree with this. Arizona, even with the best record in the NL, is primed for a first round ousting.

Thanks for the correction. And Actually, the Phillies had a 6.5 game lead over the Reds and Cardinals at the close of play on the 20th of September, 1964. At that point, there were just 12 games left in the season. So as bad as the Muts collapse was, it doesn't even come close to matching the '64 Phillies, IMO.

It's not as bad, but I wouldn't say it doesn't come close. It does come fairly close.

When you come that close, don't you kind of wish they'd gone all the way and set the record?

I actually know a Tigers fan who said he was sort of disappointed when the '03 team didn't quite set the "modern" record for losses in a season. The Tigers players, instead of leaving the field humbly and quietly, apparently celebrated that last win (which made them 43-119 for the year) as if they had accomplished something. The media coverage was all about how the Tigers had "avoided" the ignominy of matching the '62 Mets. But the guy I know said (words to the effect of) look, the season's a total disgrace either way. But a few years down the road, having that record would have been part of the story of the team. Now it'll just be another bad season.

Come to think of it, since the Mets do still hold that record, maybe they're okay with not setting another one this year.

Guh... why the hell is Don Orsillo doing this game? Joe Simpson is TT but I don't know if I can stand to listen to this Orsillo clown for the entire playoffs. He talks like every sentence is some sort of homerun call.

???

I don't think so. Orsillo is certainly not as bad as Thom Brennaman, who does do exactly that. I think he's fairly competent. Simpson is OK.
