I put together a little 6 team league consisting of all-star teams grouped by 20 year period... I just wanted some thoughts and feedback. Who knows, maybe I missed someone. We'll start with 1900-1919...
1900-1919 Pitchers: C. Mathewson, T.F Brown, W. Johnson, C. Young, G. Alexander, E. Plank, R. Marquard, S.J Wood, C. Mays, J. Chesbro, J. Tannehill, J. McGinnity, D. Phillipe Catchers: R. Breshnahan, C. Meyers, J. Kling First/Third/Corner: F. Chance, J. Daubert, H.R Baker, H. Zimmerman, S. McInnis, H. Steinfeldt Second/Short/Middle: N. LaJoie, H. Wagner, E. Collins, J. Evers Outfield: T. Cobb, T. Speaker, E. Delahanty, W. Keeler, J. Jackson, S. Crawford, Z. Wheat, J. Burkett. Thoughts: I think this, along with maybe the 40-50's team is probably the strongest team of the six. The pitching staff is amazing and the outfield of Cobb, Jackson and Speaker would bat a combined .350 in all likelyhood. Lajoie and Wagner are solid up the middle and Eddie Collins is there if they falter. The corners are probably the weak spot with a lack of power. What do you guys think? Next Up: 1920-1939 |

1920-1939:
Pitchers: L. Grove, C. Hubbell, D. Dean, D. Vance, U. Shocker, F. Marberry, W. Moore, E. Rixey, R. Ruffing, B. Grimes, W. Hoyt Catchers: M. Cochrane, G. Hartnett, B. Dickey First/Third/Corner: L. Gehrig, J. Foxx, P. Traynor, G. Sisler Second/Short/Middle: R. Hornsby, J. Cronin, C. Gehringer, F. Frisch, A. Vaughn Outfield: B. Ruth, H. Manush, M. Ott, A. Simmons, P. Waner, H. Heilmann, C. Klein Thoughts: A rock solid offense, with power and average spread throughout. Who do you play, Gehrig, Sisler or Foxx? Maybe a DH league would help these guys out. Pitching is thin, well, I guess as thin as it could be in a 6 team all-time all-star league. If the pitching holds up, they could do some damage. Next up, the Negro League team. |

Negro Leagues:
Pitchers: S. Paige, H. Smith, J. Rogan, R. Foster, S.J Williams, M. dahigo, D. Barnhill, T. Radcliffe, D. Redding, W. Jefferson Catchers: J. Gibson, B. Ewing, B. Mickey First/Third/Corner: B. Leonard, M. Irvin, J. Johnson, R. Dandridge Second/Short/Middle: J. Robinson, P. Lloyd, L. Day, W. Wells, C. Torriente Outfield: O. Charleston, C.P Bell, L. Doby, T. Stearns, M. Suttles, M. Irvin Thoughts: This is the best I could piece together from various sites, books, etc. I'm still not totally sure I've done everyone justice here, because the stats are hard to come by. It's a solid team though, with balance and a strong pitching staff. Next: 1940-1959 |

Ed. Note... I forgot to include Lefty Gomez in the 20-39 team...
1940-1959: Pitchers: B. Feller, W. Spahn, E. Wynn, H. Newhouser, R. Roberts, W. Ford, B. Lemon, P. Roe, C. Erskine, T. Wilks, Catchers: R. Campanella, Y. Berra First/Third/Corner: S. Musial, J. Mize, E. Matthews, A. Rosen, K. Keltner, G. Hodges Second/Short/Middle: N. Fox, L. Boudreau, B. Doerr, P.W Reese, Outfield: W. Mays, T. Williams, J. DiMaggio, M. Mantle, D. Snider, R. Ashburn Thoughts: In a DH league, the outfielders alone could hit a combined .340 with 170 HR's. Throw in Musial, Matthews, Berra and Hodges, and you have a power-packed team. The staff has a lot of firepower led by Feller and Spahn. This team is my pick to win the league. |

1960-1979:
Pitchers: T. Seaver, S. Koufax, S. Carlton, D. Drysdale, N. Ryan, J. Palmer, B. Gibson, J. Marichal, M. Marshall, T. McGraw, G. Gossage, R. Fingers Catchers: J. Bench, T. Simmons, C. Fisk First/Third/Corner: F. Robinson, H. Killebrew, W. McCovey, B. Robinson, R. Santo, R. Carew Second/Short/Middle: J. Morgan, E. Banks, L. Aparacio, P. Rose Outfielders: H. Aaron, R. Clemente, R. Jackson, L. Brock, A. Kaline, C. Yastremski As I got closer and closer to the present, I included more and more people, because more is known about their skills, etc. An outstanding staff top to bottom and excellent defense (Morgan, Aparacio, Clemente, Robinson, Bench)define this team. Can they compete?? |

1980-Present
Pitchers: R. Clemens, G. Maddux, R. Johnson, O. Hershiser, J. Morris, T. Glavine, B. Saberhagen, M. Mussina, J. Franco, D. Eckersley, T. Hoffman, M. Rivera Catchers: M. Piazza, I. Rodriguez, G. Carter First/Third/Corner: M. McGwire, E. Murray, G. Brett, M. Schmidt, W. Boggs, J. Giambi, P. Molitor Second/Short/Middle: R. Alomar, R. Sandberg, C. Ripken, R. Yount, O. Smith, A. Rodriguez, D. Jeter Outfielders: B. Bonds, K. Griffey Jr., T. Gwynn, K. Puckett, S. Sosa, R. Henderson, A. Dawson Some say the stars of today would crush the players of yesterday because of the advances in technology, weight training, etc. Others say the game has been diluted by expansion and tarnished. I believe that today's stars would do more than hold their own against any era, and I'd love to see it. |

I'd put Ed Walsh and Rube Waddell ahead of several of the 1900-1919 pitchers...

I'll concede Pedro for Orel, I don't know how I left him out...
Rivera (save for game 7) is one of the most dominant big-game pitchers ever. Goose is on the 70's team. I'll switch Hoffman for Smith. I will also do the giambi for bagwell switch... but Molitor is the glue for this team. No one can touch his baserunning, average, and overall game smarts. Dawson for Winfield makes sense... Winfield beats him in every category but SB's. Thanks for the feedback! |
