Bonds brought down to size.

... because he's no longer going to be a Giant. (Ha, I love wordplay almost as much as foreplay.)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...=si_topstories

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds is finished in San Francisco.

The Giants told Bonds they will not bring him back next season, ending an era in which he became all-time home run champion and a lightning rod for the steroids debate in baseball.

"It's always difficult to say goodbye," Giants owner Peter Magowan said Friday. "There comes a time when, I think, you have to move in a different direction."
So, where would he be accepted?

Its almost herasy and hypocritical, but for the right price (much less than he'll get), I'd accept him in Minnesota .

I wouldn't want him with the Cardinals, mostly because he's a huge defensive liability at this point. Wouldn't mind seeing him DH for the Jays, though.

I'm sure the steroids have already brought Barry "down to size" where it counts.

Bonds is going to the AL so he can DH. Now, only to find a team that will take him.

Any team that would willingly say no to a 172 OPS+ needs to have its GM fired

No other Giants starter has an OPS+ above 100.

Ouch.

I hope its not Oakland because I really don't wanna not be an A's fan next season. Plus it would kinda go against the Daric Barton project.

I wouldn't want him anywhere near my team with that steroids cloud around him.

Maybe the steroid issue wouldn't be that big a deal soon, if more and more players are found to be linked to various substance abuse.

Oakland is already full of 1B/DH/corner OF types, even without Daric Barton. The only reason people talked about Bonds in Oakland is because Oakland is close to San Francisco.

Given Oakland's DH history of the past two years (Big Hurt last year, Piazza this year), Oakland seems plausible. It would keep him in the Bay Area. I'm guessing he only will get a one-year deal and that Oakland will pony up to get him.

And because in recent years they've hired a couple of star guys late in their careers, Mike Piazza and Frank Thomas.

Teams sign older star players all the time, to fill gaps. I don't see how that's relevant. Piazza and Thomas were signed for depth, not because they were older stars.

Are you saying the Mets might be signing Bonds because they signed Alou, who is similarly an old OF?

You think?

Oakland is clearing Piazza (8M), Loaiza (7m) and Kendall (12M) are off the books already, Bradley (3M), Kielty (2M) are also gone. That's 30+ million that the payroll will be reduced for next year, and the team only has about 15M of an increase from arbitration and back loaded contracts.

That leaves 15M assuming the budget doesn't change.

I think they should trade Chavez and sign A-Rod though

Well, perhaps you don't, but some do. Someone mentioned that to me tonight.

And, I'm not saying about the Mets. I don't know where you're getting that.

I don't think Bonds is worth 15 million dollars more than Jack Cust to the A's, especially since they're not likely to compete for the division next year.

Centerfield is their biggest need anyway.
