Runtime Error Closes Game at Year End

FYI report of this error more than anything as I'm certain it cannot be reproduced. I certainly hope it won't be reproduced on my end!

While there is great merit in backing up your leagues often, I now have to add to that suggestion especially at year's end.

Through the winter meetings and through the last week of the year, I spent about 5 hours scouting, examining, evaluating trade offers, making trade offers, moving minor leagues about, etc... The tasklist was endless preparing for the start of the next year and readying my roster slots. In a final frenzy to sign a relatively unimportant player on the free agent list, but a necessary roster fill and worthy gamble. I made the offer and went to my mailbox, clicking Finish Day, waiting for his reply. His first update came on 12/31/2011 at which time I, of habit, clicked Finish Day hoping to have signed him, not considering the year end activities would ensue at that point.

Program begins and hits the Updating Player Pictures, moving the % at a pace that prompted me to hit the couch until it completed. My son passed by just prior to this post, waking me, saying "You got a runtime error on that screen you were waiting on." I'd hoped I'd only heard it in a dream.

Nope. There it was. Click OK. Program is terminated. Start it back up. It's December 12th. (sigh) Unable to reproduce is right. Unable to reproduce the evening hours' investment in roster maneuvers. Sure, I can do my best to recall the personnel changes I made and force them. I can even try to reconstruct them in-game and see if I can get similar results. I can see it as a sign from God that the Norborne Grays have been granted some mythic redemption and offered a second chance to undo decisions that would have altered the course of mankind in the Covenant universe.

I can vent a little, post my post, and move on somewhere in between. So back up those leagues at year's end! I know some people do it daily, but I can't bring myself to enjoy a game that requires that severe a crutch.

I feel this much (pinches finger and thumb together almost touching) better now.

Aw, man. Sorry to hear that. Can you let us know if it crashes again when you advance to the end of the year?

Okay, it did crash again via the same runtime error. This time I went the Autoplay to Next Year option on the Manager Home page before I did anything else, just to see. Same result, apparently during the Updating Player Pic stage again.

I have zipped and rar'd the .dat files, but - for whatever reason - I can't upload the package to sigames as we normally do. I think it's a permission error, listed as critical transfer error. I'll try again later in the day.

I'm going to try a workaround in disabling FaceGen for the last day of the year and see if it will just skip that phase altogether. It's not like I can't run the update later if I want to, but I'm not convinced it's a critical phase of the year end process anyway.

In addition, I will save the game as it stands right now on 12/12 IIRC, so that if a solution is found - beyond my workaround if it works - I can go back to that date and implement a fix if one is provided, but I can't be optimistic on that note. All you boyz have more than your platefulls.

Thanks for the reply again, Nutlaw. I'll keep you posted.

Perfect. We've got this Tech Support give and take stuff down to a science. I write one line and you already know every step to take from there.

You do great. Any ideas on why sigames ftp is giving me problems?

No clue, but it being the weekend and all, I'd bet that SI has some sort of issue that won't get resolved until tomorrow.

Understood. In that event, I'll at least get you posted on whether the disable workaround gets me to next year. Thanks again, Nutlaw.

All right. Update. Simmed to 12/31. Disabled FaceGen. Closed Game. Restarted Game. Simmed to 01/01/2012. Went another day to see if the almanac would generate. It didn't. Went to Almanac Settings. They were now all turned off (unchecked). Don't ask me why that happened.

Generate the Almanac through the pulldown menu. It's still going on, but having skipped the Preparing Players, Updating Pics phase, it appears it will finish without problem (knock on wood).

I plan to reactive FaceGen once the process completes. Having gone through this, I'm not sure how much I'll actually use the Almanac - not having seen it yet - but it may not be worth these hurdles. Cato was that way too, though. You learn to live with it if it's important to you. Secondly, I don't know if the update pics will work at all, yet alone at year's end. I'll have to try that at a later date if I don't have an answer on the uploaded file (when it can upload).

In any event, that's the process getting there, as complete as I know it. We will see.

Well, for awhile I was soooo optimistic. I tried the Update Pics from the Game Setup menu - as I'd noticed a couple of players in wrong uniforms, a residual effect from the game that didn't save - and it crawled along all the way to a 70% completion before the dreaded Runtime error that forced the closing of the program. Drat.

At this point, even with 48 teams, it might prove easier to go to each team's home page, then uniform/pic etc.. and Update This Team's Member pictures. On the other hand, what's a uniform? I could simply keep my eye peeled for the oddball wrong uni and make the change when I note it. It goes without saying, though, it shouldn't have to be this way.

I'm having the same problem at the end of the playoffs. Ugh.

(Running vista, btw.)

This thread is still open and pending the ability to transfer/upload a file to SI.

Okay, while the file is not visible to me, filezilla does say transfer completed. There 'should' be a file called endgame.rar in the save-game directory.

Server rejected my file attachment as too large, Markus. This file isn't in the saved-game directory at sigames' ftp site?

Markus, were you ever able to secure this file?

In any event, I wouldn't give it high priority as there is a work around (ignoring it and doing it team by team). And I did check, as one user found, the quality of the hard disk and it wasn't an issue.

Focus on your priorities. I was just curious about whether you ever did get ahold of the file. Thanks for all your hard work.
