The Red Sox lost 1-6 to the Jays, and the Yanks looking to win against Orioles... makes the AL-East Race to the closest (isn't it?) 3.0 games

This is from May, when he had just passed DiMaggio. Tonight he has 2,337, passing YP's man Williams and having passed your guy quite a while ago. All great names, regardless.

Indeed. All great names. And, Detroit lost too, so we gain in the wildcard race.

Overall a good night. Hughes settled down, Ramirez got out of a jam before creating one of his own that Vizcaino got him out of. The biggest issue is with the-reliever-who-shall-not-be-named. If I was Torre, he wouldn't even make my post-season roster.

Guys, guys, let's settle down here. Thank goodness I'm around to sort things out.

CommishJoe, I have established that its acceptable to refer to him as F********h. This will prevent the confusion that you apparently caused.

myasu, I would not mind Mr. Igawa joining the squad again if it meant the departure of Mr. F********h.

redsoxford, what the heck are you talking about? Oh, I get it (second coffee down). Heh, heh.

He is called Kyle F********h isn't he? Serves him right that you can get the words rot and wank out of his name when his performance tends to go along those lines.

Oh, I'm too slow on replying

Yeah, baby!

The good thing about this race with Detroit is that there's no way (is there?) that the Yankees will face the Tigers in the playoffs. One of the biggest fears my friend has is us having to face them and a character named S*******d has a career series against his former team.

Very clever. What threw me was the "Rot!" I thought it was one of those "what, what" expressions thrown in.

I'll just call him K-Rot. In any case, I don't think he should be on the playoff roster

I am also glad that we won't be facing the Tigers. That would have been a dream come true for Sheffield. When the pressure on, he's at his best. Add to that the revenge factor, and watch out! Luckily, we won't get to find out

What is the magic # for the wild card? 10?

Good questions.

My guess is that they don't sign Abreu, put Damon back in CF with Melky moving to RF (best arm of the bunch) and put Matsui back in LF with Giambi their full time DH. That's definately not their best defensive alignment (especially with Hunter being available), but that's the best they can probably field with the bunch they have.

We have to wait, of course. There are too many variables. First, everybody says they don't sign Abreu. Well, back in May or June that was a no-brainer, but he's closing in on 100 RBI's. Maybe the Yanks do re-sign him? Also, you mentioned Hunter; a FA may throw a monkey wrench in things. One thing for sure: I want Cabrera in either CF or RF.

One more relevant question is what do they use for the post-season? Damon-Melky-Abreu is their best defensive OF, but then who do they DH? That would probably require Giambi at 1b with Matsui at DH. I suppose it'll depend on how good Matsui is feeling at the time and how well Mienky does at 1b over the next couple of weeks. I'd much rather see Doug at 1b than Giambi, that's for sure. It's almost painful watching Giambi play the field now.

If either Damon or Giambi were right-handed, it would be a platoon at DH, no doubt. Go with the hotter guy, I guess, but keep Giambi off 1B. Start Mienkiewicz there. He's been contributing, as we saw last night. Matsui is too good to keep out of the lineup, and he is most logical at LF, not DH, IMO.

I think we Yankee fans are trying not to jinx things. It really is hard to believe that this is (may be) happening.

True. It is hard to believe that this is happening..........again.
Don't worry about the jinx.
Probably thousands of the Red Sox fans are "jinxing the things" right now.

Even if the unthinkable does happen, just remember that I've already used the word ten-sational so the NY papers best not use it...

It won't happen though. Even though it is only 3.5 now, there's only 11/12 games to go - if we win 7 of those 11 games, the Yankees will need 10 (or is it 11) of their 12.

And the playoff spot is virtually booked anyway. Magic number of 5, so we only need 5 out of 11 to be in the playoffs.

If Cleveland and Anaheim have level records at the end of the season, is it their record against each other that determines who plays the AL East winner (assuming that's how it ends up)

I was looking forward to using "ten-peat" myself, but I don't think it's going to happen either.

Stop it redsoxford!!!
You are actually making me more nervous by all these numbers!!

Yankees will need 10 out of 12?
Now I really feel like they can do it.

Say it 1998Yankees!
Say it out loud that you think the Yankees will catch the Red Sox.
