19th Century Facepack to be Released.

I'm in the midst of completing this project. Lots of double-checking at baseball-reference to get the names spelled properly. Nicknames and spelling variations are plentiful for this era.

On letter J at the moment, 172 images verified to this point. Should be a decent sampling for 19th century simmers to use. 1884 seems to be the year that the baseball card explosion began. Professional baseball is covered pretty decently from that point onwards. Images prior to 1884 are a lot more scattershot.

I may get this out tonight, and if not, Sunday for sure. Hope my fellow simmers of this ancient era have some fun with this.

If anyone would like to host this file, give me an email addy to send the file when complete, and I will be happy to do so.

I'll be sending the file to baseballsimcentral as well.

Update on the project.

Finished work on the facepack and did my workaround for creating a 19th century league, this one in 1884. Imported the 1884 rookies and had a look at the images I had been working on inside the game.

To my dismay, many of the photos don't show up very well with OOTP's 90 x 135 default image display. Unlike what you will see in a TigerFan facepack, the bulk of cards from the 19th century are portraits of the players in simulated action, shot from medium range and not with the clarity of picture we are accustomed to as photo technology was in its infancy.

I ended up with 311 player photos covering 1871-99. I will continue to collect player images from this era of baseball but as it stands, I don't think releasing this set as a facepack at present would be a good idea.

I have no idea how hard this would be to program, but it would be very cool if you could choose the size of your player image display.

I'll take anything you've got. Ballplayers were ugly in the 19th century anyway

The final 311 cards were culled from my current total of 847 player images. There is certainly the chance you may have a photo of a player missing from my collection. I'd welcome contributions from any source to fill gaps in the set, there are many.

Attached is a text file with the list of players with player cards in the set, currently.

I'm going to do some more polishing of the set and go ahead and release it based on the feedback in this thread. I'll send it up to baseballsimcentral and to Dargone once I have it done to my satisfaction.

I'll throw this suggestion up to the group for feedback. I will show the original image followed by the way it looks at 90 x 135 in the game. The third photo is the new and hopefully improved version of the original photo with a healthy amount of cropping to emphasis the player's face.

If version 2 is preferred over version 1, I will have to go through the entire set and do a great deal of work in Irfanview, a great freeware program, cropping the images to get the desired effect. This would delay the release of the set a couple of days but might produce a much improved set. Here goes.

Barney Gilligan is photographed in your typical 1880's fashion. Medium shot of him in simulated baseball action and picture clarity not of sterling quality.

Original photo.

Version one. How it would look in OOTP5 at 90 x 135.

Version two. Photo cropped to emphasize face.

Thanks for the responses. After comparing numerous images, I'll be going with option two and cropping the images to enhance the players face. I'll do this with all 311 images where it is warranted.

This will take time and I hope to get this finished by the weekend at the latest. Perhaps we'll be doubly blessed and Markus will have the 5.02 patch out with a fix for the vanishing player bug by then. I can dream, can't I?

I'll update the thread with my progress finishing the facepack.

well i was going to send Carlton some 19th century pics.
Just had been busy with school.
But if since your doing a facepak if you want i could just send them to you and then you can resize them or whatever.
They are black and white newspaper photos.
But they might work for players you may not have.

Just gimme a list of ones you dont have and ill see if i have a pic.

Sending a list of the ones I don't have wouldn't be practical as there are hundreds. I'm attaching an updated list of the one I posted earlier in this thread of players covered by the 19th Century facepack. One player was removed, career started after the period the facepack covers, and 12 new ones were added as I ran across a new website today. This brings the total of players in the facepack to 321.

If you have photos of players not covered in the list, I would be very happy to add them.

I've continued to work on the 19th century facepack and it now includes 474 players. I'd planned to release the facepack in its current state when the new patch squashed the vanishing player bug even though there are still more player images to be discovered online. The bug wasn't addressed so I shall continue to work and expand the players covered by the facepack.

I went to baseball reference and added up the player debuts between 1871 and 2000 and it totals 2215. With 474 players covered to date, that is a dissapointing .214 batting average. I'd like to have one third of the players included before releasing it to the public and will work towards that goal. Hopefully, the next OOTP5 patch will address the vanishing player bug but at this point I don't have a lot of faith that it will ever be resolved with this version of OOTP.

Dark horse shoot me an email...or a PM

I have many 1871 guys, from no names one year guys to Lip Pike, Asa Brainard, Tom York

I have asked Baseball man if he has Pop Snyder...hes hard to find...PM with your email and maybe you, I and Baseball Man can swap photos and see if we can get a complete set...I also have a very good "unidentified" player (looks like a college player with bland white uniform) that I use as my default photo.

Most of mine are pretty good since I got them by looking through old 19th century photos, brochures, media guides and Baseball score music then cut out the player photos with infraview
