BaTTY's Bambino?
I think we may have found our 'Sultan of Swat' - St. Louis Brown outfielder Max West has, in just 93 games, already posted 40 homers. He's now hit 40+ in all four years of his career and at just 24 years of age, is already third on the career home run list.
Heinie Zimmerman is first with 230 career bombs. Second is Danny Green with 172. Third is West, with 167. Zimmerman is 33, Green is 35 (and on his way out) and West is 24. His stat line thus far this year: Code:
Batting G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB K AVG OBP SLG OPS TAVG ISO Overall 93 345 117 23 7 41 112 87 48 21 .339 .414 .803 1.217 1.423 .464 Projected 151 559 190 37 11 66 182 141 78 34 .339 .414 .803 1.217 1.423 .464 Check out Max's player page on the BaTTY site.

Crazy season by West. Between West, Mantle and my Wilson and Terry, it's a fun age for crazy stats...

Never realized Sportsman's Park was such a home run haven. The Browns' version has a HR rating of 240 (the Cardinals' version only in the 130's). That helps explain why West hit 42 HR's at home (and a respectable 17 on the road)

Actually, the factors on the site aren't correct. They've been updated for the 1929 season - the Braves, like most teams went up (I believe they're now around 50), while some of the extreme high (like the Browns) have come back closer to the pack. This is due to teams in the late 20s beginning to tailor their parks (and their game strategies) towards the long ball.

1929 Amateur Draft
A trio of top-flight pitchers headline this year's batch of incoming freshman, along with a few franchise-type position players. From this crop, there are possibly three of four future Hall-of-Famers. All-in-all not a bad draft class...

Another milestone reached this year is a new all-time hit leader. Jack Clements - 1st round pick in 1909 - is playing his last season this year - and will go out at the top of his game at 39. Not bad for a catcher.
Jack Clements Stats He will finish his career ranked 1st in hits, 7th in HR, 1st in RBIs, 1st in doubles, 15th in walks and 1st in runs. Oh, and he also had 3 career stolen bases. Career Batting Stats Code:

One thing I found pretty interesting, in light of Curtis Granderson's 20-20-20-20 season, which is pretty rare (especially in modern times):
Mickey Mantle, who just finished his 11th season, has never really developed into a real HR threat (his career high is the 23 he hit this season - 1929), but is without a doubt one of the greatest five-tool guys to have played in BaTTY thus far. He's had three straight seasons of 20-20-20-20 (that'd be 20 or more in doubles, triples, homers and steals). His "lack" of homers and proclivity for the double and triple is probably attributable to playing in Shibe Park, but his career numbers are really impressive regardless: Code:

1929 Season Notes
Instead of doing seasonal updates, I'm going to try something different (sort of like the Mantle post I made above). BaTTY is unique because we're using real players who are normalized and moved to a different era (some are close to their real careers, while others are as far away, time-wise, as they can be), so there is always something cool to look at.
The Red Sox won another AL pennant this season (the World Series will be played tomorrow against the NL champion Cardinals). Interesting thing about the Sox: they've got a CATCHER who almost won the Triple Crown this season. Yep, Carl Sawatski was first in batting average with .388 (after flirting with .400 all season long he cooled off in September) and homers with 38 (tied with Hack Wilson) and was second to Wilson in RBI with 136 (to the Hacker's 150). Not bad for a guy who played 11 real-life seasons (over the span of 1948-63) and only ONCE had more than 200 at-bats in a season. Oh yeah, Swats' lifetime batting average? .242 - definitely a guy who made out like a bandit moving to the high-octane offenses of the late 20s/early 30s. So how did Greg Maddux do in his rookie season, you ask? Well, the Mad Dog had a decent year for the Giants in 1929 (an offset of -57 years from his real life debut in 1986). He went 21-19 for a team which only won 65 games. He posted an ERA of 3.81 and a WHIP of 1.30. The league averages for those categories were 4.52 and 1.47 respectively. Seems like even in an era where hitters used pitchers like punching bags, Maddux does just fine. Once the Giants develop some offense to support him, he could become the Lefty Grove of BaTTY (albeit a right-handed one).

As we head into the offensive juggernaut that will be 1930 - it is unsurprising that offence leads the way in the draft again. Catcher Art Wilson and RF Chili Davis are projected to be all-stars - but the proof will be in the pudding.
I'm curious to see how Levi Meyerle does in Detroit - Levi was one of the great players of the very first days of baseball - so it will be interesting to see if his talents transfer. Edgar Renteria looks ready to tear up the league with Brooklyn - and Mike Hargrove going to Washington should help as well. After a year of Maddux - this is another pitching-short year - though Bill Voiselle will likely help the Yankees. Will Harshman develop for the Browns? Time will tell... Round 1: Cleveland pick: C Art Wilson Boston (N) pick: RF Chili Davis Chicago (N) pick: 2B Jack Glasscock. New York (N) pick: RF Tim Salmon New York (A) pick: P Bill Voiselle. Brooklyn pick: SS Edgar Renteria. Chicago (A) pick: P Bill Campbell. Detroit pick: 3B Levi Meyerle. St. Louis (A) pick: P Jack Harshman. Washington pick: 1B Mike Hargrove. Pittsburgh pick: CF Reggie Sanders Philadelphia (A) pick: CF Rick Reichardt Philadelphia (N) pick: 1B J.T. Snow Boston (A) pick: C Manny Sanguillen. Cincinnati pick: C Jocko Fields. St. Louis (N) pick: LF Jay Johnstone. Round 2 : Cleveland pick: CF Dave Eggler Boston (N) pick: 3B Jim Davenport Chicago (N) pick: C Verne Clemons New York (N) pick: C Johnny Oates New York (A) pick: 2B Pedro Garcia Brooklyn pick: C Ed Herrmann Chicago (A) pick: 1B Tony Lupien Detroit pick: 3B Nanny Fernandez St. Louis (A) pick: 3B Charlie Hayes Washington pick: 2B Steve Staggs Pittsburgh pick: 2B Billy Martin Philadelphia (A) pick: C Haywood Sullivan Philadelphia (N) pick: SS Dave Anderson Boston (A) pick: CF Goody Rosen Cincinnati pick: C Jim Sundberg St. Louis (N) pick: P Fred Glade Round 3 : Cleveland pick: 3B Steve Boros Boston (N) pick: 2B Dib Williams Chicago (N) pick: 2B Pete J. O'Brien New York (N) pick: LF Dave Philley New York (A) pick: LF Daryle Ward Brooklyn pick: 1B Russ Morman Chicago (A) pick: CF Peter Bergeron Detroit pick: RF Stan Palys St. Louis (A) pick: 1B Frank Bolick Washington pick: 2B Bill Regan Pittsburgh pick: C Steve Swisher Philadelphia (A) pick: P Rosy Ryan Philadelphia (N) pick: P Gene Packard Boston (A) pick: SS Dick Tracewski Cincinnati pick: C Tom Kinslow St. Louis (N) pick: LF Gary Gray Round 4 : Cleveland pick: C Randy Knorr Boston (N) pick: LF Roy Wood Chicago (N) pick: SS Julio Gonzalez New York (N) pick: P Alvin Crowder New York (A) pick: P Mickey Scott Brooklyn pick: P Guy Hoffman Chicago (A) pick: P Steve Blass Detroit pick: P Les Lancaster St. Louis (A) pick: P Joe Beggs Washington pick: P Sergio Valdez Pittsburgh pick: 2B John Patterson Philadelphia (A) pick: SS Henry Myers Philadelphia (N) pick: LF Scott Bullett Boston (A) pick: P Sean Runyan Cincinnati pick: P Ron Villone St. Louis (N) pick: P Jim Jones Last edited by Nuk; 09-24-2007 at 02:43 PM. |

Congrats to Cincinnati, whose new manager squeaked out a 4 games to 3 Series victory over the Browns.
An interesting side note on our upcoming draft - we will have our youngest ever player drafted - Billy Geer - who made is baseball debut at 14. It will be interesting to see how he develops Billy Geer's real-life stats Pittsburgh's got the Power, Chicago's got the speed In the NL - We had the curious situation of Pittsburgh batters finishing 1,2,3 in the HR derby (with small-ball friendly totals of 18, 16 and 15). Still, cheers to Dunlap, Johnson and Karkovice on leading the "power" surge in the NL, even if no NL batter would have cracked the top 10 for HR in the AL this year. The Cubs went a different route - with McHenry, McCosky anad Kamm going 1,2,3 in the SB base department (45,39, and 35 respectively) It is apparent that power bests speed - as Pittsburgh ended up in a tie for pennant, losing a playoff - while Chicago ended below .500, 16.5 games out. Is it really.400? Albert Pujols had a great season this year - and finished it in style. Coming to the last game of the season - Pujols was batting .395 - but unleashed a 4 for 4 showing at the plate in this final game of the year a 10-5 defeat of the White Sox. That brought his average for the year to 0.399641577... which is rounded up by statistics folks to .400. Now, some purists would dispute that Pujols hit the magic mark - but he did get there in a very impressive way.... |

It'd be awesome if more GMs did post in the thread, but I can't really point fingers since the number of posts I've made has gone down quite a bit since the start. I have to give kudos to Steve (Nuk) for picking up some of my slack, though.

I like the concept and I like completeness - it's good to have these stories and histories going through.
It was a shame that Catobase crapped out on us - but that happens in a lot of leagues - still, there's a lot of good stuff here - and it's nice to spend 5-10 minutes to type something up on it. |
