Freezes when saving

For the past 2 days OOTPB 2007 freezes when saving, and specifically when the save operation is at the `saving messages'. I deleted all the messages (only had 4 or 5 anyway), but the game still freezes at that same point every time.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a new Dell XPS410, that came with Vista already installed. I'm running in compatibility mode for `administrator, and XP service pak 2' I tried the compatibilities a couple different settings but it doesn't really make a difference, except it does need the `administrator' setting.

It seems that the game is actually saved, even though it freezes. So it's saving the game, but locking up.

Otherwise, the game works fine.

Other than `Supreme Commander' (a monstrous real time system hog of a game) crashing occasionally, all my other games run fine.

Depending on the age/size of the league (and your computer, obviously, though if you can run Supreme Commander you're probably not playing on a Commodore 64), and some of the league settings, saving the "messages" can take a while. While it's doing that, the game does appear to stop responding - so my first question is how long have you waited before deciding it's locked up?

Second point: "messages" in this context means both personal messages (for every human GM in the league) as well as old news items. So if you have your league set to keep all the old news logs, the time to save is going to increase as the seasons - and thus the news - pile up. If this is your first or second season, it shouldn't make much difference, but if you've been playing for a while, you might want to consider telling the game to remove news logs from more than a couple seasons ago and see if that improves the performance (the game only clears them out at the beginning of the preseason, IIRC, so you may not see any change until you get to that point in your year).
