The Braves hyped Brad Komminsk as the "White Henry Aaron".

Then there was Detroit's hot prospects of the 80's that Sparky was ready to put into the Hall of Fame: Torey Luvullo, Chris Pittaro, and Mike Laga.

Milwaukee had the top Farm System of the 80's as voted by Baseball America, and here's what they turned out: Joey Meyer, Billy Joe Robidoux, Glenn Braggs, Mike Birkbeck, etc.

Yeah, listening to Sparky's hyperbole over the latest prospect du jour in the Tiger's system made me wonder how he managed (no pun intended) to get Detroit to the series in '84, let alone the playoffs in '88. Tory Luvullo? Wasn't he compared to Mickey Mantle?

Anyways, my contribution:
Darryl Boston
Orestes Destrade (The next Cecil Fielder)
Kevin Maas
Michael Jordan

Kobe Bryant>Michael Jordan

Not on based on career totals of course, merely on accomplishments at the same age.

True enough, but with the caveat that Kobe had a 4-year head start on MJ. At age 23, Kobe is a grizzled vet who shares the leadership role of a championship team. At age 23, MJ was toiling away as a 2nd year player on with a marginal group of schlock-artists that featured the likes of Rory Sparrow and Orlando Woolridge. Of course, by the time Kobe turns 30 he could very well be approaching MJ's accomplishments. Despite not watching much NBA anymore, I do enjoy watch Kobe highlights.

But I digress. It's much more fun to imagine who is better than Jordan in the baseball world. It's fun! Like:

Rick Leach > Michael Jordan
Tony Tarasco > Michael Jordan
Terry Mathews > Michal Jordan
Ross Gload >> Michael Jordan

The possibilities are virtually limitless.

Most Tiger draftpicks

Every Tiger No. 1 over the last 10 years except Weaver (and maybe Anderson)

Whatever happened to Kenny Baugh and Matt Wheatland?

Greg Brock

I remember when they started comparing Paul Konerko to Brock, forunately he left that shadow.

I don't see how Kevin Mass can be considered a flop. Guy had some very productive years.

Mark Lewis, interesting person to be mentioned.

Ben McDonald, I don't consider him part of it, he made it to the big leagues which is more then 95% of what any minor leaguer does. Also his stats when he played in the majors were respectable, 78-70 record.

Here is some interesting stuff.
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/feats/feats7.shtml

I would say looking back at the last 20-30 years

Al Chambers would be one of the worst 1st round picks of all time.
along with David Clyde.

Kevin Maas broke into the bigs in 1990, and argueably had his most productive year:

G----AB----H---D---T---HR----BB----K----R----RBI----AVG----OBP---SLG
79--254---64---9---0---21---43---76---42---41---.252---.367---.535

...and it went downhill from there. Granted, he hit 23 homers in 1991, but it took him 500 at-bats to get there. The guy kind of reminded me of Ken Phelps, sans all the walks. Maybe Steve Balboni?

Maybe there wasn't a lot of "can't miss" hype surrounding the guy (I honestly don't remember, but I do remember that there was at least some buzz surrounding him), I wouldn't exactly call many of his years "productive". You may see it differently, which is what barfights, baseball discussions, religion, and politics are all about.

Yikes! Sorry for the formatting. Anyone know how to display stats like these?

Hrm... I could have sworn he did more then that.

But his hype was only because of his first season. Him and David Justice busted out the same year I remember all that hype, I made some money off their cards

Kevin Maas set some sort of astounding record like 5 HRS in his 2st 5 ABs or something like that...thats why he had all that hype

Well considering how bad that team is right now I would think these kids would do whatever they could to make an extra buck!

Oh man, you mentioned Pittsley. He grew up Dubois, PA, about 15-20 miles from me, a few years before my time as it were (I believe he graduated HS in 92, I did in 98). The hype when he was drafted was all over the local newspapers. It drove everyone around home absolutely batty. It became a game amongst my freinds and I wagering on how bad he would get tanked that night in the game for KC.

Two particular incidents stick out in my mind about him. In 98, I believe, he ignited a bench clearing brawl between KC and the Angels by hitting Phil Nevin. When Nevin charged he grabbed him by the head and bulldogged him to the ground. My uncle, who has known his family since Jim was born said, "I didn't know he had it in him. He was always such a sissy." The other time was when either Canseco or McGwire (I can't remember) hit a 500 foot bomb off him in Kansas City. That might still be the longest one hit there. And oh yeah, I forgot about the time he gave up 4 or 5 home runs in an inning to set that dubious Royals (AL? ML?) record. My memory is foggy because I haven't been actively Pittsley bashing in some time.

Other than that, I'd have to agree with everybody else that has been brought up, in particular Brien Taylor. I was overjoyed when I was twelve and I found a Brien Taylor rookie card in a pack of 1992 Topps. It was worth *two whole dollars* and the rest were about twenty eight cents, and even less now.

I think you're missing his point. (psst: look at your sig again).

Also, Destrade was already pretty old and not a prospect when he was billed as the next Cecil Fielder. He was given that hype because he did well in Japan, just like Fielder did before he hit his 51 homers.

Brooks Krieschnick (?!) would be considered a bust as an OF, but could revolutionize the sport, amazingly.

to me... Chad Hermansen. He was supposed to be some kind of super-stud, had back to back 30 home run seasons in the minors. A total wash out in the majors though (so far).
