I'm of a different opinion regarding the playoffs, despite John's insightful analyses.
My method of prediction is simple.....season series record. O's lead the Angels 8 to 4 in the season series. Giants lead the Pirates 7 to 5. ALCS - O's in 4 NLCS - Giants in 5 World Series - O's in 7 |

1973 World Series Preview The California Angels won the American League for the second straight season. Last year went to Game 7 before losing to the Phillies. The Halo offense was more workman like than explosive in the ALCS, scoring four to five runs in each of the games. When they needed runs, they scored them. At some point in the post season, the levy will break. A telling storyline will be if it happens just once, or if the Angels can breakout the big bats in several games. Harry Hoffman, Joe Imig and Bobby Egger pitched well against the O's, with Emig turning in the gem of the series. They got plenty of rest after the sweep, which allows the club to set its rotation in any manner they chose. The Pittsburgh Pirates game back from being down 2-1 to win the NLCS in five games. Nothing is more telling of this veteran team than their ability to quickly regroup after getting blown out 13-1 in Game 3. Against the Angels offense, that ability may come in handy. The Pirates offense may not matchup with the Halos, but they know how to put timely runs on the board. As usual, Bash Mahoney shined in the spotlight. George Adkison and Jerome Gabbert were on the mound for all three of the Bucs wins in the NLCS, including Adkison's key shutout gem in Game 4. Harry Cutshall got lit up in his one start. There is a bit more pressure on him in the World Series as he'll be forced to move up to starting Game 2 as Gabbert won't be ready until Game 3. My Prediction: We could have three matchups between two of the best starters in the game, Happy Hoffman and George Adkison. It looks very unlikely that either team can lose two of the games their ace starts and still win the series. While Cutshall in Game 2 is a worry for Pirates manager Vic Gorin, Gabbert is now 5-0 with a 2.57 ERA the past two years in the post season. If Cutshall wins Game 2, this could be a very short series. The Angels, though, have comfort in having one of the best big game pitchers in the game in Emig, while Egger showed he can win in the playoffs as well. They also know their offense will have a big game or two. In the end, this has all the makings of going seven with Hoffman and Adkison out there on the mound. Pirates in seven. It was a truly great World Series: 2-3, 6-7 (10), 10-9 (10), 8-6, 4-3 and 7-4. By the end of Game Four, our heads were about to explode in the live chat. John |

Star Outfielder Perishes in Plane Crash
Huntsville, AL (AP) April 5, 1974 A chartered plane carrying Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Asa Booker and four other passengers went down near Huntsville, Alabama late last night, leaving no survivors. The Birmingham, Alabama native Booker, 38, a three-time Batter of the Year award winner for the Pirates, had chartered the plane to visit his home state after the tornado outbreak that devastated the northern part of the state as well as many states across the central and eastern United States over the last two days. Booker and his companions were in the process of delivering relief supplies to the residents of northern Alabama when a combination of continued poor weather and mechanical problems is believed to have brought down the plane. Local residents reported the plane flying extremely low before a series of four explosions ripped it apart. Emergency crews, already strapped by the demands of tornado-stricken communities, were on the scene as quick as possible, but could find no survivors. The Pirates are scheduled to play their season opener in St. Louis against the Cardinals today. An official statement from Major League Baseball and the front office of the Pirates and Cardinals indicated that the game would go on as scheduled, with a moment of silence observed before the game in honor of the Pirates' fallen star. Asa Booker, born January 28th, 1936, first came up to the big leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1956, and made his first of 10 All-Star teams in 1958. Traded to Pittsburgh prior to the beginning of the 1960 season, it is with the Pirates that Booker became famous, winning Batter of the Year awards in 1962, 1967 and 1968 and leading the Pirates, long one of baseball's most miserable franchise, to World Series wins in 1966, 1967 and 1973, along with appearances in the playoffs every season between 1966 and 1973. In his career, Booker amassed 3048 hits (22nd all time), 469 doubles, 216 triples, 291 home runs, 1465 RBI, 1567 runs and 735 stolen bases (9th all time), hitting .304 for his career.

In the News
April 4: Pittsburgh Pirate right fielder Asa Booker, a surefire Hall of Famer, dies in a plane crash near Huntsville, Alabama while delivering relief supplies to the tornado-ravaged countryside. Booker, from Birmingham, Alabama, passed the 3000-hit milestone in 1973, becoming the 23rd player in league history to do so. April 5, 8: The Cardinals host the Pirates on Opening Day and Busch Stadium observes a moment of silence for Asa Booker. The following Monday, the city of Pittsburgh holds a memorial service for the fallen star, with thousands either in attendance or in the streets outside. April 9: Houston Astros catcher Marlin Lee hits for the cycle against the Padres. With his footspeed sometimes compared to a glacier, Lee got some help from miscommunication between the right and center fielders for the Padres that allowed him to lumber around the bases for an 8th inning RBI triple. April 26: Atlanta Braves ace Joe Cardinan tosses his 4th straight complete game shutout, a two-hit gem against the Cubs. After dropping a 5-4 decision to the Reds on Opening Days, Cardinan has allowed just 11 hits in the 4 brilliant outings since. Code:

April 1974 Magazine
![]() In the past decade, Kevin Rebosse has evolved into a complete player. A four-time All-Star in the past six years, Kev has led the league in hits in the previous four years breaking the 200-hit mark in all of those seasons. Before coming to Cincinnati, Rebosse was drafted in the first round of the 1959 draft, 3rd overall by the Chicago White Sox. Going the Windy City’s direction is Hall-Worthy Randy Liebermann. The expectation on Rebosse was skyrocketing in the clouds. He needed just two minor league years to hone his skills and cracked the majors by 1961. His first four years were a disappointment, hitting below .250 each year – even below .200 on 1964. The management didn’t lose hope on his hitting woes because he’s a savvy defender in the infield. Knowing he’s just a kid from Bellevue, New England, they stick through him and in the following year, their patience was rewarded. Nine years have gone by and Rebosse never had an average lower than .265 and whose hits total never came fewer than 144. He’s a true professional doing all the things their manager wants him to do. When he was called to be the lead-off man in 1969, this underrated hitter was finally exposed to the bright lights in baseball. He never flew under the radar anymore and every team, players and fans alike knows the Red whose jersey number is 28.

April Monthly Rankings
April 1974
Rk (Last Week) (Rise/Fall) Comment 1 (1) California Angels - Yes, California is still the top dog. What earned them the edge over Atlanta? Their recent play, their stronger run differential (244 runs scored against 150 allowed). 2 (3) Atlanta Braves (+1) The Braves close the first month with a shutout loss against San Diego, and in the process they see Whitham’s streak of stellar pitching continue (25 consecutive IP w/o yielding a run). But that doesn’t stop them from being the best team in National League. 3 (5) New York Yankees (+2) Their 4th starter, Jim Lindsey hit the DL, but Bill Kees (6-2, 1.68 ERA) and Dennis Rutland (5-0, 2.38 ERA) will not mind. The Yanks continues to be seriously poised on the mound as they walked the fewest batters in all of baseball (71). 4 (2) Detroit Tigers (-2) The first month of the season was roaring for the Tigers as they rank 5th or better in all pitching categories. Not only that, they put the ball out of the park with ease, thanks to the addition of James Bosler (.375, 6 HR, 23 RBI) and the emergence of rookie Johnny Baker (.292, 6 HR, 20 RBI). 5 (4) San Francisco Giants (-1) Inspite of the Giant’s extra clutch (5-0 on extra innings), this season they’re 18-5 on the road to boot. That’s a bit startling. They’re home is on the road as they were just 5-9 on their true home field. NL MVP last season, Dino Dinardo is overshadowed by Miguel Nunez’s breakout season (.386, 7 HR, 28 RBI). 6 (6) St. Louis Cardinals - Don’t look now, but the fightin’ Redbirds head into the first month sitting atop the tight NL East. They’re without question having the best young pitching staff. Joe Brouten has iced opposion going 4-2 with 1.85 ERA. 7 (13) Cleveland Indians (+6) Biggest jump in the power rankings were made by the Indians. With above-average hitting and timely pitching, they finished the month winning their last six games and are just 3.5 games back for the AL East throne. 8 (7) Philadelphia Phillies (-1) Could anyone remind the baseball world that this team is rebuilding? But they are just 1.5 games back of the Cardinals. Let us now praise manager Jay Wallsworth. The skipper directed the team after losing the core of their squad. 9 (8) Oakland Athletics (-1) Oakland closes out the month with power on the offensive side and power pitching on the other. They’re behind the best team in baseball, the Angels and in the process, they are 8 games back. Ken Heinz has shown that he could still be called “Pops” after hitting .311, 6 HR and 18 RBI. 10 (10) Pittsburgh Pirates - Jerome Gabbert and George Adkison are on a roll. They both have identical records (4-1), with 3.60 and 2.02 ERA, respectively. But the other starters are mediocre at best which kept them at the .500 mark. Dropped Out 11 (9) New York Mets (-2) Bad news for the Mets’ hopeful as they were dropped from the Top 10 teams of the month as they collapsed to a 3-7 slate in their last 10 games. The newly acquired M.C. McCarter from the Cubs is major going 7-0 with 1.91 ERA. On the Bubble 12 (14) Chicago White Sox (+2) This team relies on their young pitching and hopes to continue their offensive stride with mix of young and veterans in the lineup. “Meat” is headlining the offense, as he pounded the pitchers he faced with a line of .354, 3 HR, 19 RBI and 15 R.

I know there are still some of you out there that follow the league but are not an official part of it. If you've ever thought that you might want to get in and join up as a GM, I encourage you to visit the forums on our new site and get on the waiting list. The league's hiatus pretty much annihilated our waiting list, and we'd like to see some new faces join in the fun. You never know when a team might come open!
We're closing out 1974 right now, even though I've been pretty lax in posting updates here, and with the rumblings of free agency on the horizon (remember, we strive to follow real life history as closely as possible, just with fictional players), there's never been a better time to get even more active in the league.
