Re-sign 35 year old Posada for $19M?

So I decided that since I paid for this game, I may as well get some use out of it.

I started a historical league with the Yankees in 2000 because I wanted to see if any of my Yankee teams could better George's real Yankee teams.

Posada has come up for contract renewal in the 2007 season. He's been happy as a clam at $12M/year, but now he wants 19M+ and he's 35 years old.

He's been having very good seasons, leading the team in HR and RBI the last 2 years (no, I don't have A-Rod), but I'm just not convinced a 35 year old catcher is worth $19M a year. He's been ~.275, 30, 100 the last 3 years, and is on track for that this season.

I offered him $15M (a 3M raise) and he called it a joke.

So who's the joke on? Me if I don't pay him, or Posada for demanding so much $$$.

And for the record, some good catchers will be free agents, but no all star caliber guys that I can see.

Yeah, I've seen that, too. My star right fielder (in a fictional league) was in his contract year and wanted something like $19 million a year for 3 or 4 years - he was in his mid-thirties and his stats were visibly in decline. I was able to trade him for a younger player with a similar skill-set. The team I traded him to wound up inking him to a 3-year, $51 million deal, and now he's busily hitting something like .240 for them instead of me.

Don't sign him. I guarantee it will probably be a mistake if you do. Trade him if you are still before the deadline, otherwise, get as much out of him for the rest of this season and then let him go to free agency and let some other nut waste their money on an aging vet.

Interesting that you use that phrase. I did try a run at a current league about a month ago when Cubby's rosters came out, and I couldn't dump Pavano for a rookie league backup. And all the teams replied that they didn't want an overpaid aging vet or something to that effect.

I agree that he's not worth 19M. I'd be happy keeping him at 12M for another year or 2. I grudgingly offered 2 years @ 15M, with year 2 being my option, and he laughed at that.

I am still before the deadline, but since I don't have a viable option behind Posada, I'm going to keep him the rest of the year and let him walk. Maybe he'll be more reasonable as a UFA.

Depending on how I'm feeling at the time and playing the league out, I may or may not sign my aging veterans. Sometimes when I'm playing certain organizations, there are just guys I have to keep. I'd never play the Yankees, but as the Astros, say, I could never let Bagwell or Biggio walk or Ripken as an Oriole and so on and so forth. There are some guys I'd keep even though I know it'd probably turn out to be a bad move.

the big question is...what kind of funds do you have? Is it going to hurt your financial stability if you sign him and he flops? Or do you have a ridiculous amount of cash like the real new york yankees? You could always resign him and sign another starting catcher out of free agency. It all depends on what kind of money you have.

Money isn't the issue. I can afford him. I just can't see paying that much for him.

I agree however about some players that you just can't let go. For me it's Jeter and Petite, but I can certainly make an argument for Posada.

I still have time to decide.

In the meantime I picked up Eli Marrero off waivers and inked him to an extension. He's no Posada, but he's a decent catcher if nothing else works out.

Got to the trading deadline. I had offered Posada 16M a year, but he refused. So I traded him to the White Sox for Pierzynski, Uribe, and a slew of minor league prospects. I thought it was a nice deal.

Chicago later re-signed Posada for 2Y @ $17M, which is a # I wasn't going to offer.
