My league's first .400 hitter

Using Skydog's fictional settings for v2007, this is my league I started in v6.5, (2 seasons), actually suffered through one season in v2006, and this is my first season in v2007. This is a league I play out every single game of my team. This guy is NOT on my team, but had an incredible season. His team did finish first in my league's toughest division (all 4 teams finished above .500). Check out his month of July, hitting .479.

Hey, this fellow is not clutch! His lowest batting average (.388) is in the late innings. I bet he gets boo'ed a lot, like A-Rod (used to).

Edit: Hmmm. Except his close/late average is .402. Waterbury Whammer, indeed.

You know it's interesting looking at some of the counts and his hitting. Get him 0-2? Doesn't matter, he hit .440. Go 3-0 on him? He's 1-1 with 46 walks!!! Let him get ahead in the count??? How about a .488 clip??? 2-2 is the only count he wasn't very "successful" in, hitting .276.

Very impressive. A lifetime .364 hitter and only 26 years old. I say trade for him NOW !!!

Not as productive as you might think he should be though.... must be slow. Has 5 SB and only 10 in his career. Scored only 126 runs being on base 374 times (221 hits + 153 BB) and only had 104 RBI. Maybe he is a slow leadoff man? Still I would take him in a heartbeat....

Don't judge players by RBI. It really is not a very good stat because it is dependent on other players ability to get on base and their ability to run the bases. If what you are going for is a measurement of individual ability then RBI is pointless. Same with wins for pitchers.

Very true.... for that matter... his lack of scoring runs could be caused by the lack of hitting in the lineup behind him. Just seems like his stats in these areas should be better. I need to look at some .400 hitters (or near .400 hitters... like G. Brett and R. Carew in the recent past) to see how they faired in those categories... may have been similar. Carew hit .388 in 1977 with 239 hits and 69 BB (total 308) and scored 128 runs and had 100 RBI (14 HR). This guy had a combined 374 hits + BB. Oh well most likely just circumstances.... thats baseball.

However, it is difficult to get a way from using RBI and wins because they are so ingrained in baseball. And more importantly, RL important decisions are maded based in part off of RBI such as Triple crown, MVP's etc.

But looking at it theoretically, is a guy who hits 50 home runs but only has 50 RBI more individually productive than a guy who hits 50 homeruns with 200 RBI? No, individually they are the same although the current baseball marketplace would incorrectly place more value on the latter.

I started my league in 1900, and am currently in 1927, and my best batting average has been .399 in 1924 by a guy named Ron "Fertile" King. King was my first move as a GM when I took over the leagues worst team in 1920 (Pittsburgh). I drafted him 1st overall. The thing about King is he hit .399 at the age of 22. If anybody could have broken the .400 barrier, it was him. Was. Last week (June 30, 1927) he suffered a CEI at the age of 25. He was hitting 398. He was a career .360 hitter, and by far the only guy with a chance to get 4,000 hits. He had 917 at the time of his injury. That was in 741 games. What can you expect with a nickname like "Fertile"?
