Teixeira bidding heating up
It's looking more and more like Mark Teixeira will leave Texas sometime before Tuesday's trade deadline.
MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Braves, Dodgers and Angels are all in serious talks, while the Red Sox and Yankees have shown some interest but don't appear to be able to put together the best package. Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports reported tonight that the Braves are in the lead with an offer of switch-hitting, blue-chip catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and highly-regarded shortstop Elvis Andrus. The internet rumor mill is reporting that the Braves also will need to include a solid pitching prospect (Matt Harrison, Kyle Davies or Jo Jo Reyes) to make the deal work. That same super-reliable internet rumor mill is reporting that the teams are close to an agreement in principle. Teixeira is in arbitration this year and next, then he (accompanied by agent Scott Boras) is FA eligible after the 2008 season. |

I really hope the Braves dont make this deal
Trading away the farm for a player who will not play for the Braves after next season is beyond stupid There is also really no guarantee that in the final month and a half of the season Tex alone will push them to a playoff spot First base is a sore spot for them but the pitching is a leaky slowly sinking wreck which prevents long win streaks needed to get into the playoffs A very bad deal Wiser would be to see what you can get for Scott Thorman maybe some midrange bullpen help or a starting pitching flyer If Tex could be signed beyond 2008 then I would be all over this deal But chances of that happening are less than 5% The Braves dont pay big extensions and have not done so in years Andruw being gone after this season will free up some money but his contract is from a bygone era The Braves will have to shell out 80% of what they are paying him just to land a just above replacement level center fielder The little bit of money they do save is not near enough to keep Tex around All in all a terible deal if it goes down |

I disagree. I do agree they need a pitcher, and I think Thorman could help in bringing in a Matt Morris-type. Teixeria is a huge upgrade at the position and has a whole year to get healthy.
I also heard it was Davies, along with Andrus and Salty. The question remains: would they be better in just keeping Salty and have him man 1st, or move McCann there and Salty catch? Is this deal even necessary? |

The Braves could have really used Teixeira at the plate last night with the tying run on third and one out. Salty struck out, and is hitting something like 1-17 w/RISP lately.

The month he missed has pretty much sufficed.

I'm glad the Yanks can't put together the best package if they'd have to offer something like the Braves are said to have offered. That's way too much for a year and a half rental. Even if it is Tex.

It wouldn't be a 1.5 year rental for the Yankees.

It might not be for the Braves, either, for two reasons. Firstly, Andruw and his big contract is coming off the books after this season. And Smoltz won't be around a lot longer. Chipper is questionable. So there is a lot of salary leaving. Secondly, the Braves are under new ownership, which has shown signs of loosening the purse strings a bit.
That said, Teixeira's agent is Boras, and the Braves might not be willing to pay $20 million a year for anyone. |

Me too. The current winning binge (albeit against weak teams), the return of Phillips and even the temporary emergence of Duncan could not have come at a better time to prevent an ill-advised move by the Yankees.

With Boras, I always assume the player will hit FA.

I think this latest reported offer is a bit too high for a guy they are not likely to re-sign after next season: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7065740

They could always throw in Gagne.

Gagne and "throw in" are mutually exclusive terms.

Here are the latest Teixeira trade rumors from the BB Prospectus fellas.....
"Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira remains the most intriguing player who could be moved before the deadline, and Atlanta continues to look like the frontrunner. The Braves are reportedly willing to offer a package of right-hander Kyle Davies, rookie catcher/first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and infield prospect Elvis Andrus. The Dodgers are also very much in the running, and could likely entice the Rangers to make a deal if they would include pitching prospect Clayton Kershaw in a package with first baseman James Loney and outfielder Andre Ethier in exchange for Teixeiera and reliever Joaquin Benoit. The Angels’ chances of landing Teixeira have diminished now that they need right-hander Ervin Santana to come back up from Salt Lake to take the rotation spot of Bartolo Colon; Colon is likely to miss the rest of the season with his elbow injury. There had been talk of Santana leading an Angels’ package that would also include first baseman Casey Kotchman, and outfield prospect Terry Evans. The Angels have now turned their attention to Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, who they nearly signed as a free agent after the 2005 season. They and the Dodgers have also asked about Toronto's third baseman, Troy Glaus. The Yankees would love to acquire Teixeira, but their refusal to part with one of their top two pitching prospects, either Philip Hughes or Joba Chamberlain, has dashed any hopes of pulling off that deal. Instead, look for the Yankees to possibly add a veteran reliever, as they are interested in Texas’ Eric Gagne, Kansas City’s Octavio Dotel, Pittsburgh’s Salomon Torres, and anybody from a Houston trio of Brad Lidge, Dan Wheeler, and Chad Qualls. The Yankees might also add a bat for the bench, and are eyeing Cincinnati first baseman/outfielder Jeff Conine and Tampa Bay infielder Ty Wigginton."

I really, really wish JS could find a deal that didn't involve trading Salty, but I'm sure the Rangers pretty much are making him a requirement.
Salty is going to be special in a few years. And Teixeira is going to be gone from Atlanta. |

I do not understand the Dodgers wanting to trade Loney AND someone else for Teixeira.
I know Teixeira is good now but Loney is already showing flashes of brilliance and may be just as good if not better than Mark. The Dodgers should pray that this deal doesn't work out. |

If the Braves were able to land Teixeira without including Saltalamacchia, where would Saltalamacchia play? He's obviously not going to unseat McCann and his new six-year contract behind the plate and with Teixeira in the mix, he won't see much time at first either. In a deal for a power hitting 1B, Saltalamacchia almost has to be included in the deal.
