John Leighton 1890

Missing player

Impressive contribution ssac98, I was aware that the Brooklyn team had a variety of colored uniforms but not that they had green caps as recently as 1937.

Keep the colorizations coming Rube, paticularly liked the Dolph Camilli one.

#1, I had no idea the Dodgers were ever in anything but Dodger Blue.

The franchise that we now know as the Dodgers were previously known by a number of other nicknames including the Robins, the Superbas and Bridegrooms. The origin of the franchise in the Major League actually dates back to the old American Association in 1884 when they were known as the Brooklyn Grays.

In his book 'Dodger Classics' Bob Tiemann gives an account of opening day 1887 when Brooklyn played the original New York Metropolitans. He states both squads appeared in brand new uniforms. The Mets wore suits of brown and gray, while Brooklyn had new white and maroon uniforms.

So, did Tommy Lasorda bleed Dodger Green as a child?

I understand that the name Dodgers comes from the insulting term for Brooklynites "Trolly Dodgers"

Bill James 1914 Braves

Bill,

Admiring your work to this point. Any chance of you doing Bill James? (1914 Braves). The Bain collection has an excellent B&W photo.

It wasn't really insulting. As in "dodging paying" but rather that Brooklyn had numerous Trolly lines running through the city. Hence, people who lived there literally had to "dodge" trollys.

Pejorative or condescending would have been a better choice of words than insulting.
