So who is this Shelley Duncan kid? Did the Yankees just catch lightning in a bottle again (similar to Kevin Maas and Shane Spencer's starts) or does this guy actually have the potential to be something? The fact that he makes his ML debut at 28 can't speak very much toward his potential, but I figured I'd ask anyway

Buster Olney actually mentioned in his blog last week that he should get a shot. All I know is that he is Chris Duncan's older brother (and of course Cards' pitching coach Dave Duncan's son).

Duncan won't turn 28 until Sept. 21. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2001 draft by New York out of U. of Arizona.

His career line entering the 2007 season was .251/.334/.468 with just 43 at bats at the AAA level. This season he put up a .295/.380/.577 line at AAA Scranton. That's easily the highest level of performance Duncan has displayed in his pro career.

My guess? Kevin Maas.

That was my guess. However, I suppose we should wait until he actually faces ML pitching before trying to judge him Sorry D-Rays fans (if any exist).

Thanks for the info DH.

Wait, Devil Rays, where ya going? Don't leave town so soon! George is having Bud rearrange the schedule so we can have some more fun with y'all.

Excuse the grammar, but this is my idea as well.

Also, too many curtain calls. Three home runs, three curtain calls. Sorry, that cheapens the idea and it also shows up the Rays to have a rookie called out like that over and over. The first time, as a welcome, sure. The last two? Embarassing.

Duncan looks like a guy who strikes out a lot. MLB pitchers will "solve" him soon, in that case.

Well, hopefully they remain on this rich vein of form until Monday morning.

Fingers crossed for the next series - we've got the top of the Central and you've got the bottom.

Kinda like the rearranging of the schedule where we get to play the Mets every season? Blah

Thank you. Curtain calls are so overrated now. Everyone gets one for nothing.

Edit: By the way, how many curtain calls has Derek Jeter gotten? I honestly can't think of one time he's been called out for a curtain call.

Back in the day they use to have to push Mattingly out to take one... Now, you sac bunt and your standing on the top step!

This is encouraging:

Hughes started for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, throwing six shutout innings, allowing two hits, striking out seven and throwing 73 pitches in a 4-0 victory over Louisville.

I saw Duncan play twice at Scranton this year. If he was 22, I'd be really excited, but at 28, you have to wonder. but....he can hit it a long way, at least vs AAA pitching.

The yanks badly need youth, especially hitters. Andy Phillips seemed to be tehe heart of the scranton team, which is scary!

If you think about it, their payroll is thru the roof, and their best pitcher (wang) and one of their better hitters (cano) makes nothing.

Cano's been an awful long way from being one of their best hitters this season.

If your young, gifted second baseman is putting up a .295 /.337 /.453 line and he's not one of your best hitters, then offense is probably not your team's Achilles heel.

Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy have both earned promotions to AAA Scranton.

Oh, my! Good times on the way.

One more, just one more. Then it's O-Kei, D'oh-Kei, bye bye, sayonara. Time to phil a hughes hole in the pitching rotation!

He's got "scrub" written all over him, IMO. At least he'll have better memories than poor old Chase Wright.

Yeah, but he's been coming on, pulling up his average slowly. That takes a lot of doing at this stage of the season.
