I guess I'm traditionalist in that if you need to park somebody out of position in the field, it's either 1B for the infield or LF for the outfield. RF requires an arm (which Jeter has, come to think of it) and so does CF to some extent. Most important for CF is speed to cover the additional ground out there and an experienced eye and glove to judge and catch the ball from more angles than the corner OF positions require.
I don't see an older player who's never played CF in his career and who is slowing down with age doing well out there. The idea of moving him to 2B was better, and 1B would be a consideration when he has 2935 hits and the next Jeter is breaking in at SS. If it must be OF, put him in left, move Matsui to center and Cabrera to right. Cabrera has the arm for that, for sure. BTW, YP, no offense meant by that "bizarre" comment. I expect "bizarre" from some others here, but not you! Just my opinion in any case and I was shocked by the idea, I guess. Last edited by 1998 Yankees; 07-17-2007 at 10:57 AM. |

No offense taken.
I don't seriously consider it possible for Jeter. I just figured it wouldn't be a bad idea. I can see why it would be bizarre. I guess we can all agree that Jeter isn't moving anywhere. And if he does move it'll likely be to 1B when he's 39 and for some reason the Yanks think they need to extend his career. |

If Jeter sucks at SS, and could potentially suck in other positions, then why have him on the field at all. Why not DH him? He's very useful with the bat in his hands, so remove the negative of his fielding, and focus on the positive of his batting.

Really, most people don't think Jeter sucks at SS. That's the problem. If you actually look at the numbers and pay attention to the data, it's pretty clear that he's one of the worst-fielding regular shortstops in the majors, but most people only see the highlight films. Remember, he won the last three Gold Glove awards. So anything we talk about is clearly hypothetical, since in the minds of most people, there isn't anything at all wrong with keeping Jeter at shortstop.

Personally, I'd rather see Jeter in RF if he's moving to the OF. In Yankee Stadium with that deep LC, LF is almost as roomy as CF is. You need a pretty good fielder in LF to make up for that. Jeter has the arm for RF so I don't think that would be an issue.
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Jones manning CF after this off-season.

He's a FA after this season isn't he? I also believe he's a Boras client so he's gonna ask for the moon. The Yanks might be willing to pay him that.

I wouldn't give him a case full of cash. tbh, you're probably going to be paying Johnny Damon anyway. I'd give him a chance to get healthy and still see if he can hit and play CF.

Oof. Jones is in a pretty steep decline right now, and hasn't exactly exhibited the kind of work ethic you'd expect from someone to bounce back from that. He definitely wouldn't be worth anywhere close to what he's going to cost.

Don't forget about Torre Hunter (Yes, I misspelled it intentionally - looks good, though, doesn't it? Too bad Torre is a racist according to that noted sage Gabby Sheffield. Better see if we can get Bubba Crosby back).

Plus, he's a candidate to suffer from Cal Ripken Syndrome - steep decline in his early 30's due to not taking time off while playing at a physically demanding position.

On the other hand, you have Jorge Posada, age 35, has not caught less than 130 games since 1999, yet having a career year in his contract walk year. I mean a career year, currently batting almost 60 points higher than his career average, with this year included. Talk about motivation!

I'VE GOT IT!
Dan Johnson, Mark Kotsay, and Eric Chavez for A-Rod and Melky.

I'd do that for just Melky. As long as the Yankees paid for everything.

I'm looking forward to seeing him on the mound again. Igawa is destined for mopup duty when Hughes returns. There's still a flicker of hope for this season that may yet burst into flame if Hughes can dominate.

How many folks in Boston are looking back at their 1978 scrapbooks and biting their finger nails at this point?

It's been down to 7 or 8 in the last couple of months and then went back to 12.5. It's swings and roundabouts. A couple of good results our way and against the Yanks will take the lead back towards double figures.

4 games with TB, 4 with KC, 3 with Balt, 3 with the White Sox, 3 more with KC, 3 more with Tor..that's a nice stretch where they need to look to go .700 over. |
