memory/CPU sucker embedded in OOTP5
I love OOTP5. It's a tremendous upgrade to OOTP4, and it's the best baseball sim I know of.
I hate the fact that OOTP5 installs Runservice.exe, a service that starts at runtime, runs whether or not I'm running OOTP5, and which eats up 1,308K of memory. I'm curious to find out more about the way eLicense works. Does it modify my PC's boot sector, like Macrovision's SafeCast does? I'm a software developer, and I've been considering installing Linux on my main box (where I use OOTP5), and I'll have a tough choice to make if I can't install Linux without horking up OOTP5. This issue has been very frustrating for TurboTax users this year. See http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...,881013,00.asp for example, or check out the results of a Google search on turbotax drm. I edited this article to change the subject, originally "trojan embedded in OOTP5". Trojan seems a little bombastic. Last edited by morningstar8; 03-11-2003 at 01:50 PM. |

Pierre, thanks; that's a relief. I'd really hate to have to choose

From the start up list here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...tup_full.htm#R N-LicCrtl (runservice.exe) eLicense, licensing system incorporated with some software and games Code N means the following: "N" - Not required - typically infrequently used tasks that can be started manually if necessary |

Go into Services and set the LicCtrl Service to Manual, instead of Automatic. Then it will not run when you start Windows. It will only run when you launch OOTP.
If you are on NT, Win2K, or XP, the single command net stop LicCtrlService will kill the service after you are done with OOTP. You can put this in a batch file with a simple link to it. Or, if you don't want to have to remember this, create a batch file "runootp5" which runs ootp5.exe, and then does the net stop command. This will leave a DOS window open while OOTP is running, but that is a minor concern.

BleacherBum, that works; thanks!
Scott, I'll take that as agreement that I can safely set runservice.exe to start manually, and stop it after I exit OOTP5, without affecting OOTP5. I do appreciate your help; the advice I've received here has been much more helpful than the advice I've received from TurboTax "support". |
