What age did Steffan start playing? You mentioned the music scholarship. What all kind of things can they actually study in college with music to do later on as an occupation? That's the thing that's got us kind of wondering where this could all lead for Antonio should his interest in it continue. Antonio had taken piano lessons for about 3 years previous to going into 6th grade and joining the band. His ear for the music seemed to really help him have a head start over other kids in the 6th grade band when they started last fall. Rocco |

He really didn't start playing until middle school and took to it naturally. He can play a variety of instruments now. He made third chair trombone at Morehead and was one of only 3 freshman in the Symphony.
He is studying to teach music and he would prefer to do it in college rather than HS. The majority of his classes are music related with a few core requirements thrown in. He also plays in the marching band for football but he barely missed out on the pep band for basketball. His music scholarship covers about 1/2 of his tution. I seem to think kids either have the ear for music or they don't. Neither his mom nor I have any music ability but there are musicians on my side of the family. |

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Tommy Sims Rating 1 USA
LHW 1955-71 35 wins / 36 losses / 4 draws / 12 KO Alias: Hurricane Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Sims fought a long career that saw him fight a good share of what you might call the middle talent of the LHW division throughout the late 50's on through the 60's. It was a mixed bag of results until in 1965 through 71 he fought some pretty good names in the lHW along with a couple well know heavyweights that he just could not match up with as he lost his last 14 career bouts. You could hurt Sims apparently by looking at the 16 times he was stopped in a fight. His one real time in the spotlight sort of was his fight with heavyweight Jimmy Ellis on November 14th, 1966 at the Houston Astrodome as part of the undercard to the Ali/Cleveland Williams Heavyweight title fight. Sims light didn't shine very long though as he was KO'd at 2:38 of the first round by future WBA heavyweight title holder. Sims started out his career 12-3-1,with 6Ko's fighting the locals around California. Then sometime in September/October 1957 he moved to the Houston, Texas area and it was around parts of Texas where he staged primarily the remainder of his career over the next 14 years. Through 1964 he won fights against, Eloy Tellez(20-18-0,10), HW Ponce DeLeon(9-26-4,5), Tommy Ramirez(14-10-1,8), Sonney Moore, Alvin Williams, HW Wayne Womochil(18-11-3,10), MW Harold Redman(20-14-1,10), Abe Davis, Benny Lee Bowser, Billy Marsh, Elmo Henderson, George Price(16-6-2,7) and Jimmy Boyde(9-7-2,8). The losses mounted against the better looking tallent, Dean C. Bogany(27-9-4,9), George Price, Donnie Fleeman four times, Sonny Moore(whom he also fought a win and draw with), Fred Lewis, Buddy Turman twice, Billy Daniels, Benny Lee Bowser(for the Texas State LHW title in september 1962), he also fought a 10 round draw with Bowser in October 1963, and future Light Middleweight Champion Freddie Little in August 1963. After a 10 round decision win over HW Jimmy Boyde in November 1964, Sims career nosedived the rest of the way as he tried without success to take on some of the better light heavys of the day. A 6 round decision loss to Middleweight Georgie Johnson(59-21-0,30) in January 1965 was the start of 14 loss skid over the remainder of his career. Following Johnson were losses to Jack Rodgers, twice in a row to Karl Zurheide, Billy Gray in London England( what took Sims out of the US the one and only time in his career to London England?), Ron Marsh, Jimmy Ellis, Mark Tessman, Zurheide again, Leroy Portalis(4-2-0,1), aging HW Zora Folley, Brian Kelly in December 1970 after a 20 month layoff after the 1st round KO loss to Folley, then in February and March 1971 Sims career came to a close with a 6 round decision loss to HW Eddie Land(6-16-0,3) and HW Gary Hobo Wiler(12-21-2,10). |

Steffan sounds like quite the musician! Not sure yet if Antonio will go that far with it. Time will tell if he has any long lasting interest in it. He really likes it right now though. Playing in the marching band is what he says he'd like to do. He's all excited right now with the thought of someday being able to play with the UGA Redcoat band on Saturday afternoon "between the hedges"

Charley Austin
Sex Male Nationality US American Alias Bad News Hometown Phoenix, AZ Division Light Heavyweight W 39 (17 ko's) | L 43 | D 6 | Total 88 Has anyone rated this fighter? Boxrecord has him as a LHW but he fought most of his career as a middleweight. I ran across him with my 67 project and was thinking about doing him as a Middleweight but wanted to see first if anyone else has who's worked more with the guys under the heavyweight divisions already has a rating... Thanks Rocco |

I have not heard of him being rated Rocco. A board search did not turn anything up either.
Have you received the private messages that I sent to you?

Here is some heavys i"ve had rated for a long time most of them have seen there better days or already retired. So here is my prime rating for these HW'S i might be way off on them or someone might have already did them i couldn't fine any of these rated at there prime Orlin Norris has a prime CW but he had about as many HW fights as CW.I rated him at prime.post and end which is the best way to do most fighters. These fighters are in the game at different stages so i hope its ok to post these fighters. If there ratings are way off make up some names for them and use them as fiction fighters.

Eureka--I think I've finally nailed Sam Shumway
boxer: Sam Shumway
1939-1947 Global ID 035711 sex male division heavyweight nationality United States residence Webster, MA won 38 (KO 18) + lost 59 (KO 53) + drawn 4 = 101 I've been trying to create this fighter for several years and I think I've finally gotten him right. I first encoutered Sam Shumway in a 1946 Ring Record book. He had a noticible, lengthy losing record that piqued my curiosity. Boxrec had a more complete take on his career which looks terrible on face value. He fought Tiger Ted Lowry three times and notched a win over him. He also got starched by Unknown Wilson at a time when Wilson's career only had fumes left in the tank. Ring magazines from the 40s curiously have reports of Shumway headlining cards in his home town and being the main eventer when a new boxing venue opened in Webster. MA. A lot more seemed to be going on with this guy than his losing record. I came to view the creation of an "accurate" version of Shumway as a personal challenge. Last year I discussed Shumway over dinner with IBRO historian Mike Silver. Mike has personal contact with Tiger Ted Lowry. Mike informed me that Ted, at age 86, was sharp as a tack and possessed a good memory. Mike was good enough to call Tiger Ted and discuss Shumway with him and shared Ted's recollection of Shumway with me. Lowry said Shumway was a "tough kid" and "on top when I met him" and "I didn't think I was in his class". Ted also reported that Shumway was a white fighter and that he was "strictly a puncher". Other observations of Lowry that were relayed to me was that promoters of the day were not entusiastic about him meeting only black fighters because these bouts were perceived by fans as dull boxing matches. Fans wanted slugfests. Shumway's popularitly at the time appears to have come from providing fans with just that. He had to have had a crowd pleasing style. Furthermore when he was still staning after six or more rounds he only seems to have dropped a handful of decisions. Must have done more damage or been more effectively aggressive than his opponents. Seriously .. Alf and Mr. Belvedere were two of the dumbest shows in the history of TV .. yet I still watch when I catch repeats and still laugh.
It's sad really. |
