Great fight by Gomez but he was fighting a shot fighter ... that was a scary knockout by how slowly he went down then the fact that he was fighting the people trying to help him. I hope he isn't permently damaged.

How weird was it that the boxing commissioner stopped the fight? I don't think I have ever seen that before.

I officially nominate Larry Hazard as the commissioner of all boxing, not just New Jersey!

I think the ref should have stopped it earlier in the 7th. The ref was giving Gatti too much credit from his past performances coming back from near defeat. He's obviously not that fighter anymore nor has he been recently.

Larry Merchant is pretty much shot, too. So is Randy Newman. Maybe they can have a combo retirement party.

Gatti to the hospital for observation.

Edit: I missed those previous remarks. I agree all the way. The whole mess was pretty sad.

All williams through 4, probably 40-36, but Margarito doing his body work and Round 4 was his best.

Gatti announces retirement; quick vid of him after the fight . .he was at least smiling and moving around seemingly fine.

Sorry for your loss Will.

Seriosly, it's tough to watch these guys go out sometimes. One of the few that didn't make me shudder was Holmes' extended stay. He didn't really fight anyone that could hurt him and that jab was still worth watching.

It's been a great run Mr Gatti - thanks for the memories!

Williams is a busy fighter. Too bad he doesn't have knockout power. He does have a good chin it seems.

Poor Margarito doesn't get to fight Cotto.

Impressive win for Cintron.....Looks like he put that terrible night behind him against Margarito. He's a definite top ten fighter if he continues to improve under Manny Stewart.

Gomez had tremendous hand speed and too much elusiveness and really overmatched a shopworn Gatti. Glad to see Auturo is hanging them up. Gomez/Chavez Jr. is going to be a tremendous fight if it comes off. It pretty much sells and promotes itself.

Williams was absoultely tremendous tonight. He never once diverted from his gameplan even when Margarito was starting to land his bombs. His workrate alone would cause any WW huge trouble. Plus any question about Williams chin have been answered loud and clear. Margarito is a good fighter but he can be beaten by the upper tier fighters in his divsion which was proven tonight.

And in closing.....Thanks for the memories Auturo. Your courage and heart will always be remembered and the trilogy with Micky Ward was one for the ages. Always a class act in and outside of the ring

Pretty good fights tonight. Gomez surprised me I really thought Gatti had a chance but Alfonso fought a perfect fight. Williams looked really good tonight tired a bit towards the end but showed some real heart in the 12th after the 10th and 11th. Hopefully Gstti measns what he says when he says he's done

Thanks, man. Gatti has been my favorite guy for a long time. Boxing is a little less rich than it was yesterday and I'm not sure I'll find anyone that will make me want to make eight-hour round trip drives for anytime soon. He seems like a good dude and he has been hit in the head a few times, so I hope he's ok.

He seemed to be in as good of spirits as one could be in that situation in the interview. He even smiled and said Hasta la Vista.

I'm sure I'll latch on to someone eventually, but man, you just won't see anyone do what Gatti did for a long, long while if at all.

I think Gatti already had his mind made up that if he lost, he would hang it up. Guys like him come around once every 25-30 years but there will never be a fighter that measures up to what Auturo Gatti gave to boxing and his flair for the dramatics will never be duplicated.

Williams certainly has some tools and held off Margarito a couple times when I though Margarito was going to pull it out. It was interesting that two judges had it 6-5 going to the 12th.

I dunno what it is, I'm just not really fond of Williams. Maybe he's too good or got too many tools at that weight for my liking!!

He hit Margarito a couple hundered times and until the very late stages, Margarito didn't have a mark on him. Margarito was right in the post-fight that he landed the harder shots and (something that occured to me while watching) that he blocked a lot of punches. Still, I don't think he got robbed. 7-5 on two cards seemed about right.

Given Margarito's defusing/blocking shots and landing harder punches, I think he could have been outlanded by 40-60% and gotten the decision, but doubled? Tough to get the duke there.

This was the kind of fight card they need to put together more often: solid matchmaking with a little bit of everything. New warriors, old warriors, brutal knockouts, fast action, no home town decisions . . . boxing the way it should be.

I hope Gatti stays retired. The punishment he has absorbed over his career has been brutal & he'll be fortunate to maintain his mental health as it is. Along the way, though, he sure was fun to watch.

The Williams' decision was well deserved. Margarito did block a lot and threw the harder punches, but he needed to do more to overcome Williams' speed & volume advantage. However, despite HBO's love of its nifty graphics, I think it's too early to eliminate Margarito from the chart of top 147 pounders.

Margarito is still a top 10 WW but I can't see him beating Williams if they have a rematch. The speed and volume punching combined with the fact that Margarito is slow, has average defense, and loops his punches presents an easy target and opportunities to counter anything that Margarito throws.

I'm not sure how HBO can justify removing Margarito from that list while keeping a man on it that Margarito blitzed with ease just a couple of years ago.

I missed the first two fights on the card because I went to a family gathering for most of the day but truthfully I'm glad I missed the Gatti fight since I had no real desire to see him get pummeled. I hope Arturo enjoys his retirement and I grateful for all the great memories he's given to Boxing fans.

I thought Paul Williams looked damn good during the fight. He buried Margarito under that constant rain of punches during the first half of the fight and even when Margarito started connecting and made a run toward the end of the fight Williams was able to dig down and capture that final round. I look forward to seeing Williams go against the other elites in the Welterweight division in the future.

Cintron looked impressive, completely different fighter now under Stewart and I can see him being a big fighter in the welterweight picture. Gomez looked fantastic, one punch ahead of Gatti at all times, would love to see him and JCC Jr as the semi-main to something like Williams/Cotto or Cotto/Mosley. That Williams/Margarito fight was the best of the year so far for me, don't know what the guys were talking about half the time saying that Margarito was one step behind, he was digging at Williams all fight with body punches. It was probably the hardest fight I've had to score in a while as was evidenced by my lack of a backbone 117-115 decision to Williams. I scored it 4-3-4 to Williams with him winning the 12th. I hate scoring rounds 10-10 but I just could not seperate the two at all. I'd pay to see a rematch, but I don't see it happening right away. Margarito didn't get robbed, in the end Williams won for me and probably was close to taking 3 of those 10-10 rounds if I had to absolutely pick one guy over the other. All-around great night of fights on HBO, definitely a joy to come home to them on DVR after working second shift.

I didn't think it was all that close, I had it 9 rounds to 3 for Williams. IMO the 5th, 10th and 11th were the only rounds Margarito won.

Just glad all the Margarito talk will die down now. Williams will be difficult to beat at 147. I can see him moving up though.

Hopefully this means we get Cotto-Mosley by the end of the year now.

that was a great card

yea scary KO suffered by Gatti - Neuman should have called the fight off 30 seconds earlier..

Williams is still a beast but his power didn't come with him last night. I thought he had more, maybe not. Margarito had my respect up until he cried and shook his head after the decision.

Anyone else notice how at points in the fight Williams looked really unstable on his feet? It was only for like 5-10 second spells, but it was a little concerning for me. That being said, I don't know how many people could even reach his chin if he they fought the Paul Williams from the first six rounds last night. And I rewatched the fight and this time tried not to score any 10-10s, came out with 116-112 Williams as I suspected I might have last night.

I had it 9 rounds to 3 for Williams, too. Granted Margarito landed harder shots but he was inconsistent and was outworked by Williams the whole fight.

The funniest thing that happened was after the fight when Margarito said he was robbed
