Al Evans Rating 1 USA
LHW 1967-74,86 8 wins / 10 losses / 0 draws / 6 KO Alias: Evil Hometown: Detroit, MI Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Boxrec shows Evans starting out with fights in April and June 1967 against MW Larry Howard(2-6-0,1) and against HW Willie McMillan. McMillan stopped him in their their fight but boxrec has no record of what round. It's then 2-1/2 years later until November 1969 when we next see EVans. In 1969 thru 1971 he wins fights against LHW Vidal Flores(15-7-0,4) twice, looses two decisions, an 8 and a 12 rounder to Karl Zurheide, knocks out harold Carter in the 5th round, is knocked out by Len Hutchins in 7 and looses a 10 round decision to LHW Bob Harrington(14-19-6,2) for fights against the most noteworthy opponents. Evans goes 7-4-0,6KO in that 3 year period. Another almost 2 year break until March 1973 and then in March, April and May that year he looses 10 and 8 round decisions to Pat Duncan and Howard Smith and is KO'd in the 1st by Pedro Lovell. In January 1974 he looses a 4 rounder to Ellis McKinley. There's then one last recorded fight, though not confirmed official by boxrec in May 1986 when Evans was KO'd in the 5th by a Syd Taylor(18-4-0,7). For the purpose of this rating for Evans, that last fight in 1986 is not factored in. |

Bill was making a hypothetical rating assuming that McCarty hadn't died so young and a prime version of a fighter that only exists at post.

Frank Schram Rating 1 USA
HW 1967-1980 19 wins / 11 losses / 0 draws / 12 KO Hometown: Columbus, OH Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto You first look at his record and you think, hmmm...then you look at his opponents. He did fight Rufus Brassell, Lou Rogan, Kallie Knoetze, John Tate and James Tillis in the latter part of his career, loosing those. He beat Ralph (Spider) Denny. other then that, he fought some pretty sad characters. You can look them up. |

Abe "Tiger" Brown Rating 1 USA
HW 1965-73,79-80 6 wins / 20 losses / 2 draws / 3 KO Alias: Tiger Hometown: Orlando, FL Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Abe lost 7 of his first 8 fights, the lone non loss being a 4 round draw with Carlos Dunston(0-6-1,0). He lost two decisions to Mike Bruce then after the draw with Dunston lost 5 straight including KO losses to Bob Ellis(1-13-3,1) and twice to Cody Gainer(7-1-1,7). After the Gainer knockouts BRown managed a 6 round decision loss to Leroy Caldwell. Then in September and October he won his first two fights, both over Bowie Adams. From october 1969 thru October 1970 he then lost 9 out of 10 with 1 draw, to Bob Ellis. After two, 8 round decisions dropped to Moses Harrell, he was KO'd in three straight by Jose Roman, Johnny Griffin and Earnie Shavers. Three weeks later in late January 1970 Shavers stopped Brown again by 5th round TKO. That was followed by two more knockout losses to Jim Lee Elder and Jose Roman. All of those knockouts came in the first or second rounds. A coupld of decision losses to Otis Dee(6-1-1,4) and Eddie Peoples(8-0-0,6) sandwiched th draw till Ellis. Brown then won 3 out of 4 fights through June 1971. We then see a two year gap until May 1973 when Brown fights again, a 6 round decision loss. A 6 year gap then shows in his record in boxrec until a 1st round KO win over Howard Nathaniel in October 1979. That's followed in January 1980 with a 2nd round KO loss to finish up Abe's career. |

LHW 1965-72 23 wins / 7 losses / 1 draw / 10 KO Hometown: New Orleans, LA Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Started out with two, 4 round decisions over Cassius Clay Scott in late 1965. Burns won 12 more straight between 1966 and 1968. Included wins were over Bobby Dennard, hal Carroll, Gene Romero(10-9-0,5), Benny Lee Bowser, Johnny Alford, Vernon Clay twice, Willis Earls(12-15-2,7) twice, Roy Wallace and AJ Staples(11-7-0,9). Benny Lee Bowser Rating 1 USA
LHW 1959-70 22 wins / 16 losses / 3 draws / 17 KO Hometown: Austin, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto In his first career bout in October 1959, Bowser was KO'd in the 3rd round by Alejandro Lavorante who was making his 2nd pro bout in a career that started out promising by ended abruptly 3 years later. In his next bout Bowser took on another newbie on the LHW/HW ranks, George Scrap Iron Johnson. Johnson decisioned Bowser in 6 rounds. After a couple wins and a draw in his next fights, Bowser was matched up against George Price(16-6-2,7) for the then vacant Texas LHW Title in May 1961. Price knocked out Bowser in the 9th round of the scheduled 12 rounder. Between 1962 through 1965, Bowser compiled a 17-3-2 record fighting guys like LHW Tommy Sims(35-36-4,12), LHW Elmo (Tex) Henderson(25-18-1,15), LHW Luis Gutierrez(61-15-5,38), LHW Alonzo Harris(13-24-7,6), LHW Matt Plachy(11-1-0,9), HW Sherman Goodman(2-23-0,1), HW Joe Murphy Goodwin(1-15-1,0), MW/LHW Santiago Gutierrez(18-10-3,12) and MW Aman Peck(23-54-4,7) plus a number of unnamed lesser sorts. In September 1962 Bowser knocked out Tommy Sims in the 10th round to win the Texas State LHW Title. He successfully defended it against Santiago Gutierrez in April 1964 with a 10 round majority decision. Bowser gave Gutierrez a rematch for that title two months later and Bowser stopped Gutierrez in the 3rd round by TKO with a bad cut over Gutierrez' left eye. Then in November of 1964 Bowser lost the Texas State LHW title when Elmo (Tex) Henderson knocked out Bowser in the 2nd round. Those two fought a rematch for the title in October 1965 with Bowser winning back the title by a 10 round split decision. Bowser was knocked down in the 2nd round of the fight but came back on points to win the title back. From then on Bowser began to take on some higher echelon of the LHW ranks and his record of 3-10-0 over the last 4 years of his career showed he wasn't quite up to par with those fighters. He could stay in the ring with them, but didn't have enough to put them away like his earlier career opponents. The down turn started with a 10 round decision loss to Karl Zurheidein March 1966 and then was KO'd in the 5th round by Joe Dorsey(27-8-1,20) in April that year. Bowser was then inactive until 1967 when he fought five, 10 round decision fights, loosing 4 of them to Karl Zurheide, Joe Burns, LMW Gypsy Joe Harris(24-1-0,8) and HW Gene Romero. The loss to Romero in August followed the one win for the year, a 10 rounder over Romero in June. In 1968 he lost 10 round decisions to Romero and Mark Tessman. In March 1969 he was KO'd in the 2nd round by AJ Staples(11-7-0,9). After knockout victories over Frank Evans(12-32-1,9), and Eddie Gray(1-3-0,0) in later 1969, Bowser ended his career with another 10 round decision loss, this time to Eddie Jones. |

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Gene Romero Rating 2 USA
LHW 1966-68 10 wins / 9 losses / 0 draw / 5 KO Hometown: New Orleans, LA Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Boxrec and the 1968 Ring Record Book both list Romero as a heavyweight and his fight weight at times was borderline slim heavyweight but, accounts I read in 1967 issues of The Ring and just looking at his list of opponents who were mostly LHW left me with the decision that Romero really should be a LHW. Romero in his short 2 year stint fought some of the top young light heavyweights of the mid sixties. He defeated Cassius Scott Clay twice and won by decision over Bobby Dennard in 1966. He lost fights to Mark Tessman and Joe Burns. In March and April 1967 he first lost a 10 round decision to Karl Zurheide then defeated Zurheide by TKO in 10 hard fought rounds. He then lost three straight 10 round decisions to Bobby Dennard, Benny Lee Bowser and Mark Tessman. He snapped the loosing string with a 10 round decision in mid August over Bowser. Two more 10 round decisions dropped to Karl Zurheide and Paul Patin finnished out a busy 1967 for Romero. Three fights in early 1968 then is the last shown for Romero in boxrec as he wins by TKO over Willie Davis and then wins a spilt decision in 10 rounds over Benny Lee Bowser in late February. AJ Staples then knocks out Romero in the 10th round on April 1st in St. Louis, Missouri to finish Romero's brief career. |

A June 10 round KO loss to Brian Kelly finishes 1971. Elmo (Tex) Henderson USA
LHW 1954-67 Rating 2 HW 1971-79 Rating 1 25 wins / 18 losses / 1 draw / 15 Ko Hometown: San Antonio, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto There was two phases to Elmo's career, 1954-67 as a Light Heavy compiling a 20-13-1,14KO record. Then after a 3-1/2 year layoff, from 1971-72 and one fight in 1975 and two again in 1979 he fought in the Heavy ranks going 5-5-1,1KO. Fought twice in 1954 winning one then loosing by 4th round KO to LHW Alvin Green(23-9-3,5). Fought and lost once in 1955. His record in boxrec continues in 1957 winning three fights that year. In 1958 he's knocked out twice by welterweight Bill Sudduth(44-14-4,19) and looses an 8 round decision to future welterweight champion Curtis Cokes. There's another 3 year gap before one fight, a 1st round KO of LHW Eloy Tellez(20-18-0,10) in Sept 1961. Henderson then fights fairly regular from mid 1962 through 1965. Wins twice and looses once in three straight fights with LHW Ray Martin(110-8-1,5), looses by 2nd round KO to Benny Lee Bowser in 1962. In 1963 he's KO'd by LHW Tommy Sims(35-36-4,12). In March, April and June 1964 he wins three straight fights over Billy Marsh, Alonzo Harris and Marsh again, then in September that year knocks out HW John Peters(6-5-0,1). That sets Henderson up for a late November 1964 fight against Benny Lee Bowser for the Texas State LHW title. Henderson wins by knocking out Bowser in the 2nd round. After a couple of easy wins in early/mid 1965, Henderson and Bowser fight a rematch for the Texas title in October 1965. This time Bowser wins a 10 round split decision. We then do not see Henderson again till February 1967. In February 67, Henderson makes another comeback after an extended layoff winning a decision over Terry Lee(15-20-5,4) and then knocking out Pete Peterson(5-7-1,3) in April. Those fights are followed by 10 round decision losses to Chuck Leslie and Charley Austin(39-43-6,7). Two weeks after loosing the decision to Austin, in late August , Henderson pulls an upset of sorts as he knocks out promising LHW Bob Dunlop who is 24-3-0 at the time. This upset takes place in Auckland, New Zealand, the first of three times Henderson fights outside his native United States. Four months later in December 1967 Henderson and Dunlop fight a rematch in Sydney, Australia. This time in front of a reported crowd of 9000, Dunlop knocks out Henderson in the 4th round. Henderson then hangs the gloves up again for about 3-1/2 years until 1971. Over the next 7 years he fights on and off, winning a couple fights in 1971 against Willis Earls(12-15-2,7) and against Manuel Ramos in Mexico.
