Many questions from new player
Please bear with me. Some of the following appears to be possible bugs and some questions, so I thought I would post here first, before going to tech support.
I am just starting out with this amazing game. Therefore I started out with the 5 minor fictional league. Being from Baltimore, I changed the human manager team to Baltimore. 1. There is no Baltimore Ballpark to change to from the ballpark database. 2. When I try to change to Baltimore MD weather from the database by clicking on it- the program instead defaults to an alaskan city and imports that weather. It appears as though the database can retrieve only the first 40 or so cities. 3. The hints/tips in PBP (one pitch) go by so fast I can't read them, after each batter. 4. When starting up, January 1st, is there a way when advancing the autoplay to spring training to avoid have the program stop every day with messages to read- none of the filters seem to work. 5. finally (for now <grin>) only a few screens can be exported to the external browser for printing. Some such as the lineup/depth charts can't be exported either directly or by clicking on reports. Is there any way around this? Thanks foryour help. Be kind ![]() Barry |

Some of this is going to be confusing; just realize that this game is highly customizable and comes generic "right out of the box." Download and read the manual (or at least skim it to know what is possible and covered, then read the sections that you need).
1. As commissioner, you can edit your Baltimore ballpark to be called Camden Yards, have the exact seating capacity and dimensions, and even import a picture of it as the background when you play there. 2. Yes, certain cities are missing from the weather.txt database. It is a text file and if Baltimore is missing, it can be entered in there (perhaps copying the line for a nearby city like Washington DC) and then the weather database can be re-imported. 3. That's a good sign; it means your system is fast enough for the game at this point. They only put those hints in there to read while the game pauses to load or process something. As your game goes on in time or you build larger leagues, you will get enough time to read them, I think. Also if you sim long periods of time. 4. Click the Auto Play button (the baseball on the menu bar, not the baseball in the lower right). That will give you the option to sim to certain dates in the season. If you don't want to be interrupted, you need to turn off some of the options to interrupt auto-play for certain reasons (such as receiving trade offers). 5. Look for the option to export report to external browser that appears in many screens. If not available, you can always do what I do and hit the Print Screen key and copy from Clipboard to Word. Again, these are very simple answers just to let you know that there are some to your questions. The actual "how-to" would take too long for a post; download the manual for specifics. |

3- You'll have a hints.txt file somewhere in your OOTP folders, which is where these messages come from (I'm on a Mac, and I'm not sure of paths on PC). You can open the file in your favorite text editor and read all the hints if you like. 4- If you go to Manager menu --> Options, on the bottom left you'll see a list of checkboxes under the heading 'Exit Auto-Play'. If you uncheck all the boxes, you can sim a whole season at a time uninterrupted (the game always exits after the postseason if you run a team). I normally leave the 'When a player is injured' and 'When a player is eligible to come off the DL' checked- important roster moves may be needed- but uncheck the rest. I'm sure others do different! |

Thanks for the great replies (as I expected).
The weather database includes Baltimore, but when clicking on it I instead see the database skip up to the top and what is put in appears to be the Alaskan city it skips to. Would that Baltimore were 70 degrees in the summer. I guess this is a bug of some sort. The print screen option is great but if there is a scroll down list then it only captures the screen, so I will have to accept looking at in online. I did download (and print) the entire manual (and spent the past couple of days reading it WOW!. Is there a way to save the program in the midst of a PBP game that is in progress. Couldn't see how to do that. The other question that probably is here somewhere is this: I would like to play the same league=game on both my desktop and my notebook. What do I need to download and move from one computer to the next. I understand a simple backup to my flash drive would probably suffice, but the different directories will require some sorting out. Thanks again! (I date back to APBA in 1956 - my Bar mitzvah present!) |

This is the line from the weather database for Baltimore: 206,Baltimore,Maryland,9,32,36,44,53,63,72,77,75,6 7,55,46,37,3,3,4,4,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3, ** The first number is nation code; that you don't see. The second number is wind speed, the next 12 are average temperatures by month, and the next 12 are average rainfall by month. Do these match up with your Baltimore ballpark now? If so, the game is operating correctly. * Actually, Alabama should be at the top of the list if the United States is selected; if not, maybe you do have a problem. ** That's "67" temperature for September; I don't know why it's displaying as "6 7" here. I could imagine it being slightly awkward continually copying a saved game back and forth between computers, because you'd probably want to overwrite old games each time, and there are a lot of files in a saved game... |

Some more assistance:
RE: the PBP speed, you can adjust this under the "Options & Preview" tab in the game menu. Near the bottom left you'll see a section called "Play by Play Options". One of the options is "PbP Speed". RE: Messages, the game will stop whenever you receive a personal message. If you are disinterested in reading these real time, go to the "Manager Options" screen and under the header "Exit Auto-Play", deselect whatever options are appropriate (for messages, for example, unclick "When you receive a personal message"). RE: Reports, no, the lineups/depth charts does not have an associated report. To see a list of team-specific reports you can get, while on the team page, click the "Reports" tab. A drop down option in the upper right-hand corner ("Select Report") will offer you all the reports available. RE: Playing on 2 PCs, simply copy the entire league.lg folder to a portable drive and copy to the new computer. |
