Slow Game Play?

Hello:

I'm trying out the demo of OOTP and am liking the game with one major exception: it seems like it's slow going to play a game. Even though the PBP is set to fast, I'm finding long delays between batters and having to sometimes click twice before a play is made.

I also see that in broadcast mode, the score never appears on the screen.

What am I doing wrong?? Is the game normally this slow to react?

Maybe it's my computer -- I have a fairly fast (or at least I thought) Windows XP system. But my computer told me during a simmed game that I was low on virtual memory and that it had to up the amount. I'd never seen that message before in any game.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check the stickies and FAQ here on the site for the problem with the blank scoreboard.

How much memory do you have in your computer?

Hi Jprywell, I too am totally new. In fact, I'm still waiting on my disc. Suddenly I'm concerned about slow speeds too as my system is old (2002). May I ask what you're running? I have a P-4, 2.5 G processor, with 2G memory and an Nvidea, well, that's another story. Anyway, would you mind posting what your specs are??

OFG, your specs sound good for the game- I have half the RAM and processor speed, and my game is pretty fast. The game does use a lot of memory, so it's very helpful not to chew up RAM by running other apps simultaneously. I'm on Mac, so hopefully one of the PC pros can suggest other ways to optimize OOTP performance on your platforms.

I took these two notes from threads that I have read here in the past:

How do I improve the auto-play speed?

Auto-play speed is affected by a number of things, most importantly your computer's hardware and the scope of your league. But, there are a few things you can do to improve the Auto-play speed:

1. Reduce the number of game logs and box scores you save. Go to Game Setup in the Game Menu. In the Global Setup tab on the left, scroll down to the bottom and look at the Auto-Save & Boxscore Options section. The fewer box scores and game logs you save, the faster the game will auto-play.

2. Change to the "dialog view" for auto-play. Go to OOTP Preferences in the Game Menu. In the Use Simulation Screen drop-down, select "NO, faster Dialog View." This will cause the standings and stats not to display during auto-play, but it will speed things up.

3. In the same place as #2, reduce the frequency of auto-saving (if you dare). Less saves = more risk, but faster auto-play.

4. Some users have reported poor performance when they have an anti-virus program running. While we would not recommend you go without virus protection, you may want to consider disabling it temporarily to determine whether this might be a cause of poor auto-play performance for you. Some of this may be due to the fact that the game is constantly creating new dynamic report files, and your virus program may be taking the time to scan each of these.

Windows Indexing and Game Performance

Like OOTP2006, 2007 does a lot of writing and reading from files on the hard drive. Many people discovered they could get better performance from their computers if they turned off Windows Indexing of the OOTP2006 folder.

For 2007, the folder that's getting a lot of writing and reading (presuming you haven't changed the default location) is the one in your My Documents.

For example: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\Sports Interactive\OOTP Baseball 2007

In Windows XP, to turn off indexing, go to that folder, right-click, select Properties, then Advanced, and uncheck “For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this folder”.

Indexing Service creates indexes of the contents and properties of all files on local and network drives in order to increase file searching speed. It's quite similar to "Find Fast" that ships with Microsoft Office. Indexing Service runs continuously and can slow down your PC's general performance because it has to index files continuously. If you don't need slightly faster file searches, the feature can be safely turned off altogether.

Turning this service off to increase overall performance: Open My Computer -> right-click on a Drive icon -> Select Properties -> Remove the checkmark from "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" -> Click Apply. Make sure to select "Apply changes to :\, subfolders and files." before clicking OK in the new window.

Note from moderator battists (Steve Battisti):
If you want your Windows XP computer to perform better overall, unrelated to OOTP, turning this entire service off is probably Step #1. It adds very little functionality and is a tremendous resource hog.

Slow Play by Play

My computer is fairly quick -- it has a large hard drive (I can't remember the amount right now and is only two years ago. Frankly, I can't recall the exact specs but it's farily large (if anyone out there can tell me how to find those on my Dell, I'll be glad to submit them).

Actually, my slow play by play seems to be getting better. I think it was the fact that FaceGen was creating pictures while I was batting that caused the delay. However, what I don't like is that it takes two clicks before a play is made - one to hit any key or click mouse and then another to decide what to do.

My bigger issue is the fact that my broadcast scoreboard is still totally blank. I didn't see any help in FAQ. Right now, I get nothing on it -- no outs, not score, no balls and strikes. I just left a message in General Discussion hoping someone there can help.

I'm demoing the game now, but I don't want to buy until I can figure out what's going on there...

OK, you know by now that you got an answer over there. The two clicks question I'm working on too.
