Every team in the red...

Hey guys. I've looked for this discussion elsewhere but have only gotten bits and pieces of it. Here's the deal. I have a situation where EVERY team is in the red...some over 150m in the red...which appears to be leading to lots of great ball players (who are looking for the big bucks) sitting out seasons because no one can sign them (and because they barely adjust their asking prices, even after the season starts, but that's another issue).

I have no idea what caused this. It's a solo league and I'm in season six, but this probably happened last season (heading into season 5). Not sure how it happened. Would adjusting financials take care of this, and is that the best way to address it? I hate to mess with that, but most team's budgets, even in 2014, aren't much over $80m. That seems...odd.

Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks,
Chuck

A lot of online commishes were invited to look at the game just before it came out, and this is the problem that I pointed out at the time. I then saw some discussion of this on the boards, and, if I remember correctly, someone suggested that it was caused by the game doing a poor job with things like market size, fan loyalty, etc.

However, my online league Dog Days has been plagued by a similar problem, and I doubt that that is caused by the game defining market sizes. Whenever a team spends any time under AI control, it makes insane financial decisions. One team is $150 million in the red. This makes the other teams that experienced a period of AI control and now maybe $5 million in the red seem like no big deal.

If you are looking for temporary fixes for your league, you can increase market size and fan loyalty and lower the salary settings in League Setup=>Rules.

However, I think the game still has issues in the financial arena, and I would suggest posting this in the technical support forum, and linking this thread.

You may instead find it useful to use the 'Regenerate Financials' function from the League Functions in Game Setup. This will randomly generate financial info for each team based on their current payroll, and should put each team in the black. Incidentally, I've played a lot of solo leagues without encountering this issue- did you adjust any financial modifiers before you started?

What Beorn says, plus you may need to look at what the average player salaries are set to. If they are set too high for the economy you will see plenty of players sit out seasons, and even retire. Did you mess with the financial settings before you started this league? or was it all defaults?

I have seen this too in a fictional league I have. As far as I know, given all the options, I didn't mess with any settings. Not every team, but more than half were tens of millions of dollars in the red.

The game doesn't do a great job of adjusting financial decisions (by both players and GM's) to the financial environment, so you have to manage the environment carefully to get the game to act reasonably. If you're already at a situation where most teams are in the red, I would advise adjusting financials and then revising down all the average salaries in League Setup, as others have already suggested. I would also increase the cash max, so that teams can burn through their reserves first when they make bad decisions, before going into the red. I wouldn't advise this for online leagues, though, because humans can easily game the system when the cash max is huge.

Hey guys. Thanks for the responses. No, I haven't changed the league financial settings - I left it all defaults. I guess it's my bad for not noticing the situation sooner.

I think I might save the league then do what everyone says - reset the league financials and adjust down player salaries. In 2013, guys like Joe Mauer and Brian McCann are great catchers (and 30 and 29 respectively) but their stats (~.280, 30, 100) wouldn't warrant $22-25m a year in any era. So they're going to have to accept less. I can't have them sit out, especially if there is a problem in that area of the game also (if they sit out enough years they'll just retire). That's almost worse than allowing teams to go into the red to sign them.
