Rank Team Hitting (Rank) Pitching (Rank) Comment 4 Yankees Top 10 Prospects 45 (18th) 74 (1st) Philip Hughes leads off the best collection of mound talent in the game. Unfortunately, Jose Tabata is left alone to carry the weight offensively, as the hitting talent is thin. Of course, this was before Sanchez and Cox were lost for the year, and Hughes was promoted/injured. And, Kevin Whalen hasn't exactly been dominant. So, in the minors, there is Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy, with Delin Bettences coming up. Joba may be a top 5-10 SP prospect at the end of the year, and looks great so long as his arm stays attached and he weighs under 300 lbs. Meanwhile, Kennedy is eating up competition that is not up to his level. He thows high 80s/90 with just OK movement.

There's only one difference, I hope. Unlike some other fans, I can take a losing Yankee season. All teams MUST go through this at some time or another. The difference is that I would like to see some definite, effective steps taken to improve the Yankees in the next season or two, not the year after year mismanagement and apathy that I see with the Knicks. |

In fairness, the Yankees are much better than their record. Their pythagorean record is 42-33 and their record in 1-run games is 4-13. That's a lot of bad luck.
Although, having a bad bullpen is one of those things that the pyth record underrates, they're still better than their record. If they miss the playoffs this year, they'll likely be right back in the middle of things at the beginning of next year. |

Here's an article about the possibility of a Yanks-Rangers deal for Tex http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6938410

I don't think the Yankees need to do much for next season but continue relying on their young arms and developing some hitters.
I always felt this day would come because every year we all wonder when the age is going to catch up to them. It wasn't exactly age this year (young guys got hurt too), but it's a major factor. I kind of wish the Yanks didn't have Mussina for next season. I just want to see Pettitte be the vet of the group and let the rest of the rotation fill out with younger pitchers from the farm. Let them grow together. Even if Clippard isn't exactly a great arm, I want to see him on the mound some more. Same goes with Karstens when he comes back. I know Pettitte, Wang, Hughes, Clippard, and Karstens isn't exactly a scary 5-man rotation, but I think they could be solid. I actually look forward to having something like that when the new Yankee Stadium opens up in 2009 - of course, it'll likely not include Pettitte or Karstens. Maybe Sanchez and a free agent pitcher. |

Pettitte is someone who'se future success is up in the air right now. He's got a low-3's ERA, but his FIP is high-3's (his K rate is WAY down) and in addition to that he's due for some regression upwards in the HR/FB department.
Pettitte is a ground ball pitcher, so he can afford a not-so-excellent K/BB ratio and still be an above average pitcher, but the drop in K rate would concern me for the near future. |

YP, as for your suggestion for a rotation, the front 3 looks pretty good, but starting the season with Karstens and Clippard in the rotation is probably a no-no for the Yanks. Karstens is probably a 6th man at best, and Clippard is a mixed bag at this point. |

Speaking of Yankees pitching prospects, Dominican reliever Edwar Ramirez was signed out of an independent league last year and has put up astounding numbers in limited innings. He's currently laying waste to AAA batters. At age 26, it's doubtful he's an A prospect, but Edwar may have a future at the ML level.

Adding Hillenbrandn is subtraction by addition in a lot of ways

He sorta hits for power, I guess.
I'd trade him for Clippard in hopes that Clippard can be serviceable in the bullpen

Farnsworth's temper tantrum tonight over being removed with two outs in the eighth made me laugh. First of all, he's done very little in general to warrant trust. Secondly, he was being removed for Rivera, "arguably the best relief pitcher in the history of the game" for a four-out save, a move Torre has made before.
What the hell was Farnsworth's problem, muttering as he came out of the game, throwing his glove, slamming his hat down in the dugout, then sitting and staring daggers? What, Torre was supposed to overlook the two singles he just gave up? What a mutt. |

p.s. Based on Rivera's usage (or lack thereof) lately, I'm not sure Torre remembers that Rivera is "arguably the best relief pitcher in the history of the game".

I was quoting the announcers, but Rivera has shown much more poise, confidence, and effectiveness recently, much mo' like the old Mo. I think it's just a matter of saving your closer for closing situations and there not being many of those recently that accounts for his rare appearances these days, not any lack of confidence in him from Torre. |
