Free Agent Compensation Bug

I couldn't post on the Technical Support Forum so here goes.

In my online league using OOTP2007 I have found a couple of bugs:

1) The game doesn't pick up all the Free Agent signings of Type A and Type B (and I am not talking about where a signing team's pick has already been given away).

2) Sometimes (approximately 50% in this last draft) the game recognises the signing and sends the GM a message say compensation received, but the draft order is not amended to reflect it.

Can someone please log this as an issue. Thanks.

The first half of the first round is always protected from compensation, so roughly half of type A free agents sign with no comp picks changing hands. The game still sends a message saying that compensation has been awarded, however, which I think it shouldn't do. This is the only situation where I've seen comp picks not change hands, other than when a team signs two free agents of the same Type. There is one other possible issue; the game sometimes changes an FA's compensation category as the offseason progresses (it seems to be at least partly based on ratings), so a player who was type B at the beginning of the off-season might become a no-comp FA at the end. I'm not sure whether this still happens in the latest patch.

I've already posted a few FA compensation issues in Tech Support, at least one of which was logged, but it seems there are higher priorities at the moment, so it may be a while before it is improved.

According to page 383 of the game manual, no picks are protected in OOTP. It notes the variation with MLB.

Aewin, does injury log's explanation seem to fit what you are seeing? Regardless of what the manual might say, his explanation is correct.

Injury log, is the issue with the inaccurate compensation pick message logged? Did you observe that behavior using the latest patch?

It wasn't logged as part of the FA compensation issues I posted about previously; if it's logged elsewhere, I don't know. This behaviour does occur with the latest patch (I've just tested to confirm). There are two related issues with messages about Type A FA compensation picks:

-when you lose an FA to a team in the bottom half of the league, you are informed you will receive a comp pick, but you do not;

-if you finish in the bottom half of the league and sign a Type A FA, you are told that you will lose a first round draft choice, but you do not.

TT 3713 for the mail generation issue. As far as you know, injury log, the actual transfer of picks is working properly?

No it isn't. Details Below:

I have been back to the backups and identified the following signed FAs:

Type A: J Edmonds, A Jones, J Witasick, S Shields, J Lieber, M Bradley, J Wright, D Reyes.

Type B: E Guardado, E Yan, M MacDougal, B Colon.

I have amended the draft order accordingly.

Still remaining Type A free agents are Jason Johnson, Scott Elarton and Kip Wells.

Type A free agents who retired include Smoltz, Helling, Anderson, Lidle, May, Ortiz, Wilson, Redman, Mays and Armas Jr.

The only oddities are no compensation for S Shields because LAA lost him and signed him and no compensation for J Wright because TBD’s first pick was already gone for J Witasick.

My manual draft order:

First Round

Yes, in solo fictional play, from the examples I've looked at it, and knowing how the game assigns compensation picks, I can reliably predict how compensation will be awarded. Whether the game sometimes makes mistakes I don't know, but I've personally never seen a problem. So I think it's working as intended, though not quite like real life MLB compensation, obviously.

Aewin, I've compared your expected first round with OOTP's first round draft order, and bearing in mind that the first 15 picks are protected in OOTP, I only noticed one pick- pick 30- that didn't correspond in the two lists. Did I miss any? When did you take note of a player's compensation Type, and when did the free agent signings happen?

Where does it say OOTP protects picks 1-15? I can find no reference to this in the manual. I don't accept that it is intended that picks 1-15 are protected given what the manual says and given that the game issues a message (at least in certian circumstances) saying compensation applies. In any event the game didn't deal with FA compensation for Milton Bradley at pick 30.

There is clearly a bug relating to messages and also a bug relating to compensation (whatever system of compensation is intended to apply, it doesn't work properly).

I took note of FA type at the date of FA filing (22 November).

I think it also missed compensation in the second round, but i'll have to wait before I can check that.

This was changed in a 2006 patch to reflect what happens in real life MLB. I'd imagine the manual wasn't updated to reflect the change.

FA compensation type seems to be partly determined by a player's ratings, and can change over time; this seems rare, but it does happen. It is possible that Bradley was Type A on Nov 22, and Type B when he signed. If that is the case, then you should see the effect in the 2nd round.

TT 3713 has been claimed fixed for the next patch. If you do not find it to be fixed when the next patch is released, please post to that effect in Tech Support along with this TT number. Thanks.
