Career Fielding Averages file for Lahman DB 5.0 now available.

I know a lot of you have been dissatisfied with the way OOTP 5 assigns fielding ratings to players that are imported from Lahman DB 5.0.

I have created a new fielding.csv file which has the career average fielding data for each player. So now, when you import Jimmy Foxx as a rookie, he won't import as a C, but will have ratings for both 1B and 3B. His fielding percentage will be his lifetime career average at that positions as will his other information (Games, Putouts, Assists, Errors, Double Plays, etc.). Some of you may be familiar with my work in this regard as I had put out a similar file for Lahman DB 4.5. This is no different.

I would like to thank Jeff Cato for providing me with SQL queries when I did this for the 4.5 version. Without those queries, this update would not have been possible. I simply had to tweak some things to fit the new DB format. Anyways, thank you very much Jeff.

As for the file (about 665 kb), download it here: http://www.ap4e.com/CareerAvgFielding.zip

There is only the csv file, overwrite the original one and you are good to go. Give me some feed back on this and spread the word, as quite a few people would like this but may or may not understand what I explained above.

Hope you guys find it as useful as I do...

Awesome! Thank you Ankit, this is much sooner than I thought. Just in time for my replay league

Thanks for your work, Ankit. I imported the 1985 season and while there are fewer errors, I still see fielding percentages that are incorrect and range factors that don't jibe with the data. Jose Canseco importing as an A range RF with a fielding percentage .012 higher than his career numbers.

Another weird thing I noticed was Larry Parrish importing with the correct positions, 3B and RF, yet the game had him playing at 2B, a position he wasn't rated for. The Rangers had 2B on their ML roster, so that wasn't the problem.

Again, thanks for your fine work. I hope the OOTP5 Lahman import is improved with the two updates Markus has planned for the game.

The reason the fielding percentages are different is due to rounding and averaging of the other numbers. I will try to correct this today and put up a new one if possible. Range is assigned randomly by the game, import him again, and he will get another range rating... As for Larry Parrish playing at 2B, thats up to the CPU manager, nothing I can fix with the file, obviously.

Steve,Markus?

I have seen a number of people who are listed for a position that they have no fielding ratings for. This is something new to V5 as I never had that happen in V4. Steve, Markus, any idea why?

Aye, that is why I mentioned it to Ankit. It was the first time I had ever seen a team in OOTP place a player in a position they weren't rated for when there was another player on the roster who was rated there.

Didn't know others had seen this phenomenon.

I've seen a a pretty decent percentage of players import with a range factor that would approximate their career data at baseballreference. But as you mention, I've also seen some players have fluctuations with seperate imports.

If range factors are assigned totally random, that is a dismaying thought. I'd have hoped for much more with the Lahman defensive import with OOTP5.

Yes, great fix. Haven't checked it yet but here's hoping Omar Vizquel's fielding rating is improved from the "D" it is in the current Lehman.

We are entirely biased here in Cleveland but, watching him day in and day out for the last 9 years or so, he really is the greatest fielding shortstop in the history of the game of baseball.

Any chance this thread can be moved to the "MOD" forum before it gets buried on this forum?

i'm using the evaluation version of winzip wizard. after i unzipped the ankit download, i now have a careeravgfielding file, a fielding file and a fieldingof file within my stats folder. i haven't tried it yet to see if it works, but it doesn't appear to have overwritten anything, just created a new listing within the folder. does the file need to have the same name as what it's overwriting, or does it recognize the data? i don't know much about this kind of thing, as you may be able to tell.

i would appreciate any feedback as to how exactly this is supposed to be done. i would love to use the database ankit created to get accurate historical fielding.
