Real League v. Fictional

I use to always play with real teams and real rosters but switched to Fictional leagues just to give it a try. Now I still get the urge to want to manage the players I grew up watching in the 80's but as I go back I almost feel like it is less of a challenge and that it is easier for me to cheat the AI.

In the draft, I can do less analysis because I know what I'm getting when I draft Cal Ripken v. a fictional league where it is unknown.

Does anyone else have any observations/opinions regarding this?

That is why many of us prefer fictional. You can have it both ways, turn recalc off, and you will have no guarantees. Just don't get PO'd if Ripken is a bust.

Fictional - ALL the WAY!!!!

I do play DMB 9.0 for historical seasons, but it gets boring knowing in advance what your guy is going to do....

With 2007, it is a challenge in knowing the players and the game really has so much detail that you can get lost in just trying to analyze who the best players in the league are. I now keep a notebook with player notes by my pc. Curious, does anyone else go to this extreme and keep handwritten notes on the players in their league or team???? I felt a little weird when I started the notebook, but now I am comfortable with it....

Historical leagues are fun to watch from the sidelines as the bizzarre twists come out but fictional leagues are more fun to get hands-on with.

With fictional players you have no expectations.

With real players there is the possibility of disappointment.

OOTP is hands down the best sim engine for fictional leagues with many possibilities for customization. It's great to see another fictional buff added to the boards.

You're not weird, at least no more than me.

Notepad and Adobe Acrobat (for converting html reports to PDF for storage) are usually open along with OOTP.

This is why I love fictional: More creativity, anticipation, and satisfaction from success while maintaining a realistic major league environment. No scripts from which deviation is a disappointment, unless one is into what-if? gameplay (which would be the only attraction to historical play for me).

I feel like some of the best and most unique stuff the game has to offer, from FaceGen to its impressive ability to create realistic players, is missing when I run a historic league. I do occasionally do historical anyway, just because it can be fun in its own way, but I feel like that's not the primary thing the game is designed to do, and other games do it better.

That said, I love that the game lets you do both and continues to support Lahman imports. I have made an alternate Lahman database before and many others have created custom ones that offer up interesting scenarios which OOTP is uniquely able to play out.

I have run both and a mix of historical fictional league. All are fun, it just depends on how you want to play it.

This is the first year I have gone purely fictional with any sort of commitment. And I am really enjoying it.

I think I am going to try a roster set though when cubby finishes his. But I think I will try to play out every game, which will also be a first.

After-OOTP (AO), one of the issues I run into now is that I want to do everything. Since the options are all up to me I have to know what I want.
Pre-OOTP (PO) I never had many options. I would purchase the latest console game, take over the worst MLB team and try to take them to glory. I really want to takeover the Royals but I don't want the DH--too bad, can't do it.

AO---I can do everything to the point that now real MLB OOTP does not appeal to me as I am always comparing it to the real thing. My thing is now with my fictional league is that I am really wanting to mimic the FIFA setup. Right now, with my United States League I expanding year to year to get one team in each state.
