Why I Love (and hate!) this game :)

...after solidly building my NY Mets up from the real-life middling team they were in 2002 to a World Champion in 2007, I begin the 2008 season with high expectations...but after 40 games I am in third at .500. Then, a series of stunning trades (and an upgrade to OOTP5!!!!) brings about a complete turnaround that culminates in a July blockbuster trade for the best pitcher in baseball, LA Dodgers starter Nickolas Neugebauer....

...and Neugebauer delivers, finishing the regular season at 16-3 with a 1.47 era and WHIP of 0.87.

The offense is clicking, we steal bases almost at will with Ichiro in leadoff and several players with stealing abilities ranked at "A" or "B". The pitching staff, despite an August-September slump by Josh Beckett, continues to mow down the opposition and the Mets clinch in the first week of September, finishing the season with a flourish (an 11 game win streak) to head into the playoffs with a 110-52 record.

Round one, they sweep the wild card Reds 3 and out. Round two, Neugebauer haunts his old teammates the LA Dodgers as they fall to the steamrolling Mets, 4 games to 1. Then ---- the World Series and the Minnesota Twins.

The Mets split the first two games...then take the next two to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Ken Harvey and Albert Pujols are both in double digits for rbi before game 1 of the series even starts...and the roster of Neugebauer/Beckett/Bong/Talamentez/Palomino is just kicking butt and taking names. Along with soon to be named 2008 Rookie of the Year 2B Ryan Madera, Ken Harvey, Albert Pujols, Ichiro, and the door slamming power of CL Mariano Rivera, this juggernaut cannot be stopped....

Then - 5th inning, game 6.

Neugebauer is in a pitchers dual vs. Bryan Bullington - trading goose-eggs through 5.

Neugebauer walks off the mound, shaking his arm loosely yet gingerly.

It doesn't look good.

.................torn rotator cuff! Career OVER!!!!!!!!

The Mets do end up winning the series to repeat, but lose who was eventually named the 2008 Cy Young Award winner to a career ending injury in the World Series.

Talk about good news/bad news!!!!

And being named Cy Young winner - "posthumously"....wow

I DO love this game!!!!!!!!

BTW...despite the myriad annoying glitches some have reported, this game is a) a big leap (in my eyes) over ootp4; b) NOT any slower than v4; c) much more fun for me to play now!!!

I had no trouble coughing up 34.95 for this. 10 on a 10 scale!!!!!!

Great read. A bittersweet victory at best. How old was Neugebauer? Also, what were his final stats, does he get into the hall?

I had a very similar thing happen to me in one of my test leagues during the beta.

Sounds like the plot of the infamous simLeague novel, The Universal Baseball Association, J. Henry Waugh, prop., by Robert Coover. In this late-60s novel, a middle aged accountant has a whole baseball league going with dice and paper (no computers back then). Of course he begins to get attached to his league and one day the new ace pitcher is killed by a line drive after a bizarre sequence ending in a roll of triple sixes--which is a minute possibility he had set up in the game. Haven't read this for many years, but the story certainly brought it to mind.

Very cool story ...

I've yet to experience a career ending injury (at least one that I've noticed/was worthwhile) ... I want to see one ... it's such an interesting twist!

Career enders always seem to popup at the most inopportune times. For example, the Yankees pry away Danys Baez (then just a reliever, but I converted him to a starter)..

In retrospect, I should have been extremely wary of his history of being on the DL, as well as his "prone" injury status..but who can pass on those gaudy numbers????

If the guy can go 16-3 AND be MIA for 7 weeks out of the year on the DL, I'll take that any day over a guy who's 14-11 and goes 35 games without a blister
