40 Homerun Season

Without looking it up, can anyone name the last time there were zero players to reach 40 homeruns in an MLB season?

1984 is my uneducated, not looking it up guess.

Tony Armas hit 43 in 1984.

Cheater. Yeah, Reggie Jackson and Ben Oglivie each hit 39 homeruns in 1982 to lead the league. I would think it'd be the late 80's, but a couple of 40 homerun seasons emerged there as well.

It was just my best guess. I figured the '81 strike season would be too obvious, I knew Mike Schmidt hit 40 in '83, so I guessed '82.

"Without looking it up." That's why I cannot do this stuff, because my B-R link is so close by . . .

I used it once in the baseball trivia thread to come up with some arcane answer and felt cheap, unfulfilled.

I was actually suprised by the answer. I thought it would be longer than that.

I was thinking it would be 1994, and was surprised to see a couple of players hit that mark in the reduced season.

Interesting that Matt Williams, who hit 43 in 1994, had his career best in just 112 games. I am curious if anyone else had their career high in homeruns in that year.

This was kinda recent, right?

I thought I remember reading about this a year ago. I'll guess 1999. Wild guess because I'm going to assume it's before Ichiro and Crawford.

Edit: Just checked and I was obviously wrong. Interesting because I was about to list the guy that just missed 50 SB as one that I didn't think would be under the number.

My guess was 1988 because I remembered Strawberry winning the NL crown with 39 that year, but I forgot that was Canseco's 40-40 year.
