Three coaching questions
On the matter of a coach's handling rookie/player/veteran ratings: for whom are these skills important? The manual is a bit vague on the matter. Is it more important for some coaches than others? Do a pitching coach's handling ratings have a large effect on pitchers but not hitters?
Also, in what way is a bench coach important, besides teaching fielding and helping to handle a game? And one specific question: A division rival who's floundering 20+ games back just canned their manager. . . but his ratings are better than my guy's (mostly his handling ratings). As I'm way in front, it makes no real sense from a real-world perspective to fire my skipper, but perfect sense within the context of the game. Are there any potential negative reactions from my players or staff to such a strange-seeming move? |

1) A pitching coach's handling ratings should have no effect on hitters, or vice versa. These skills are important for any coach, but not for scouts or doctors. Handle Rookies is most helpful for minor league coaches, since it covers players up to the age of 25. I have no idea whether it would be better to have a coach with Handle-20 and Teach-10, or Handle-10 and Teach-20. If I designed the game I would bias it in favor of the highest product of the two (ie. Handle-15/Teach-15).
2) That's about it, except that you can hire bench coaches to manage (at relatively low pay) and hire managers to be bench coaches (rather expensively). The personnel in those two categories are pretty interchangable. You can ask a bench coach to make out your depth charts and lineups instead of your manager, but when I try it they give me back the same lists the managers do. 3) To the best of my knowledge, all it will cost you is having to pay the salaries of both your present manager and his potential replacement until the present manager's contract expires. I think your suggestion would be a really good one for 2008, though. It basically extends the morale system to personnel, which is a good idea. And the quality (and maybe turnover rate) of the personnel should have some impact on player morale. Why not post that as a feature suggestion down in Tech Support, since we have no Suggestions forum? |

Thanks again, Curtis. As for firing coaches, the manual does say that "Firing a coach also has a very strong impact on how that person and other potential candidates perceive you," but that doesn't really describe the whole host of effects that would occur if, say, tomorrow Theo Epstein fired Tito Francona and hired Joe Torre to replace him.

Ah, ha! So what you're saying is that someday I really should get around to reading the manual.
Maybe after I finish Harry Potter. |
