I Got a Giant Attitude (Giants in 2007)

Inspired by A New Kind of Brew and how awesome it was to see Jay run the Brew Crew through its paces, I thought I would try my hand at running my hometown team, the Giants, in 2007.

So... here goes nothing.

Before I start this hayride, I wanted to let you all know: I'm using AirmenSmith's 2007 MLB Roster, which is really well done, btw. I highly recommend it. It's available at the PadresFan OOTP Mod Site over here.

Preseason Thoughts:

Bruce Bochy's a good manager and I have always appreciated the way he handles the ballclub he manages. After spring training was completed, I did notice quite a few pre-season moves and trade offers from several teams; most notably for Eliezer Alfonso. Now, I'm also carrying an injured Mike Matheny, who had to be released with full pay (just because I really liked him and thought he did a yeoman's job for the Giants in the first two years of his contract). Called up Alfonzo to back up Molina (just like Sabean did, in real life).

I called up Kevin Frandsen (whom I affectionately call, "The Ocho"*), who is a remarkably talented utility infielder who could be the next Ryan Freel/Craig Biggio, type. I had two fictionals in there who were one-stars, but I'm opting to stick with the real players right now.

Where's Tim Lincecum? He wasn't included in this roster. This makes me sad.

Preseason Movements:

Arizona took a serious interest in one of my prospect SS' out of double-AA Connecticut and offered my Jose Valverde and a five-star POT MR. Is that how hard up for shortstops they are? Valverde and Benitez are both in their final years of their contracts, and Valverde's cheaper. I'm hoping I can get him on an extension cheaper if he turns out to be better by the ASB. But sure, if they want this fictional SS so badly, I'll take Valverde and rookie fodder.

I sent over SS Marcus Sanders for CL Jose Valverde and MR Felipe Paulino del Guidice (I kid you not; that was his full name) on Opening Day.

[b]Active Roster[b]

So, following the trade, here's how the opening day active roster ended up:

SP Matt Cain
SP Brad Hennessey
SP Noah Lowry
SP Matt Morris
SP Barry Zito
MR Kevin Correia
MR David Cortes
MR Steve Kline
MR Scott Atchison
MR Jack Taschner
SU/CL Armando Benitez
CL Jose Valverde
C Bengie Molina
C Eliezer Alfonzo
1B Ryan Klesko
1B/3B Rich Aurilia
2B Ray Durham
3B Pedro Feliz
SS Omar Vizquel
UI Kevin Frandsen
LF Barry Bonds
LF Dan Ortmeier
UO Fred Lewis
CF Dave Roberts
UO Randy Winn

Next Up: Starting Lineups and Pitching Rotations

-- ZC

PS: I forgot I put a star after The Ocho. I guess this will need a bit of explanation, but the first year he got called up from Fresno, he wore the number 8 on his uniform. My friends and I immediately started in with the jokes about Dodgeball and ESPN8. To dampen this joke, though, his older brother, David Frandsen Jr. ("D.J."), died in 2004 from a 19-year battle with Wilms' Tumor, a mere three months after Frandsen was drafted. As a token of affection and remembrance, Giants pitching coach and long-time family friend Dave Righetti offered Frandsen his jersey number 19 knowing that D.J.'s favorite number was also 19, and that he was an admirer of Righetti as a child.

A minor update from the previous post: I found Tim Lincecum! He is alive and healthy, and was living in AA Connecticut. Yikes. Bumped him up to AAA to see how he does.

And now the starting lineup for your San Francisco Giants:

1. RF Fred Lewis
2. CF Dave Roberts
3. 1B Ryan Klesko
4. LF Barry Bonds
5. 3B Rich Aurilia
6. 2B Ray Durham
7. SS Omar Vizquel
8. C Bengie Molina
9. Pitcher Spot

Pitching Rotation:

Barry Zito
Main Cain
Matt Morris
Noah Lowry
Brad Hennessey

In light of the Valverde trade, I demoted Tyler Walker to AAA and I know he was protesting all the while, but that's okay, because he can go take a flying leap for all I care.

What's On Tap, sponsered by Tap Plastics, the Fantastic Plastic Place:

4/3: vs FLO
4/4: vs FLO
4/5: vs FLO
4/6: OFF
4/7: @ PHI
4/8: @ PHI
4/9: @ PHI

-- ZC

PS: For Jay: Texas and Milwaukee did a Lofton for Capuano trade. IIRC, from your dynasty thread, didn't Capuano go to Texas, or was that Dave Bush?

Would it be too much to ask to get a trade update throughout the league so far?

Thumbs up

Week 1: 4/3 to 4/9

4/3: FLO 1 @ SF 2 - WP: Zito (1-0, 1.13), SV: Valverde (1); HR: Bonds (1)
Interesting to play this one out. I decided to see if I could get a better performance out of Zito by having him pitch around some of these guys. He ended up walking five and striking out three, and some of those walks were with runners on second, which made me a little nervous. It was almost like watching it on TV. Barry Bonds hit his first home run of the year, 331 to right field.

4/4: FLO 6 @ SF 1 - LP: Cain (0-1, 2.84 ERA)
Wow, Cain got roughed up in the first five innings, getting tagged for three... but the interesting thing is the fact that two of the runs were unearned because of an error made by Ray Durham from second. Not a bad ERA for zero run support, either, but Anibal Sanchez was lights out, going 7.0 IP with 3 HA, 1 ER and 3 Ks.

TRADE ALERT: Minnesota is offering Jeff Cirillo and they want Noah Lowry in return. Hmm... I need pitching more than hitting right now. I'm curious to see how Lowry does in his start against Philadelphia on Saturday before considering putting him on the block.

4/5: FLO 2 @ SF 0 - LP: Morris (0-1, 2.25 ERA)
I'm... stunned. We got blanked by Josh Johnson who went seven and two-thirds and only allowed three hits. He allowed five walks, three of which were to Barry Bonds. I'm willing to let this lineup stand over the weekend, because now I'm really curious to see how they handle the Phillies. But something's got to give here, soon.. if nothing changes.

4/6: OFF

4/7: SF 6 @ PHI 8 - LP: Benitez (0-1, 18.00 ERA); HR: Feliz (1)
So far, not so good. Lowry gave up 6 runs in the second and third innings, which nullified the Giants 2-0 lead they handed him in the top of the first. Lowry went 7.0 IP, with 12 HA, 6 ER and 3 Ks. Pat Burrell went yard off of him in the second with a solo shot. I brought Benitez in because I figured he could at least hold the tie, once the Giants tied it up in the top of the eighth, but he gave up three hits including an RBI triple. Now he should understand why I'm not confident in his ability to save games.

4/8: SF 4 @ PHI 2 - WP: Zito (2-0, 1.69 ERA), SV: Benitez (1); HR: Aurilia (1), Durham (1)
Better. And scratch what I said about Benitez. Every time he make me want to kill him, he goes and throws a scoreless inning to nab a save. He's such a drama whore. Zito did well, allowing eight hits and two runs, striking out five in eight innings. By the way, four of those eight hits were doubles. This does not bode well, but he's not exactly a flame-throwing ace. Fred Lewis collected his fifth stolen bag in the leadoff position and all I can say is, this kid is good. Omar Vizquel nabbed his first bag of the season, too. I'm hoping Lewis can carry his .364 average into the second week because he is impressing the hell out of me.

4/9: SF 8 @ PHI 16 - LP: Cain (0-2, 10.00 ERA)
Ryan Howard owns Matt Cain. He went yard twice off Cain; a two-run shot in the third and then another in the fourth. That was when we needed to sit him down because he is off to a horrible start so far this season and it can't be good for the kid. On the other side of the pillow (warm), Lewis grabbed two more bags to put him up to a league-leading seven SBs so far. He's three ahead of Juan Pierre, who has four. Although it was pitching that was our Archilles' heel (Cortes, Taschner and Atchison combined for an ERA of 43.15 in only 3 innings of relief), the bats were cracking. Dave Roberts hit two RBI Doubles, and Vizquel managed a double for himself. Roberts had four total bases on the game. While this was a sound shellacking, I'm walking away from this learning more about the team. Heck, it's only the first week of play, anyhow.

It was Davis to Texas. Bush is still on the team. Cappy went to San Diego. This looks great so far! It's going to be interesting to see what you can do with those Giants. We gonna' have a Barry Watch too?

Thanks. Its a shame that deal for the Pads. Renteria and Devine could make it a little more difficult. Great read so far.

We could, if you want. With 1 HR, he has 735.

Wow. Amazing performance from Matt Morris with his first complete game shutout of the year. IRL, he's got a complete game, but not a CGS. He had excellent run support behind him, with nine runs coming off the Giants' bats. Here's the stat parade: Rich Aurilia was the man tonight, hitting 3-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R... he's hitting .357, which is appropriate because the guy's carrying a Magnum in his bat or something. Bonds hit an RBI double off Dempster, and went 2-3 on the night with 3 runs scored, but no home runs. In spite of Morris' career night of 9 strikeouts in 9 innings, Rich Aurilia was named PotG. Beat that one, eh?

4/11: SF 8 @ CHC 12 - LP: Taschner (0-1, 40.51 ERA), BS: Taschner (1).
Yeah, I guess the Cubbies didn't like being shut out because they seemed to find holes or capitalize on fielding errors. Rich Aurilia and Ryan Kelsko combined for 4 errors in the infield, which is why Hennessey still has gooseeggs for an ERA and 4 unearned runs on the box score. In spire of the loss, Cubs pitching got tagged for three home runs: Fred Lewis (solo off Miller), Ray Durham (3-run HR off Ohman) and Eliezer Alfonzo (2-run HR off Miller). I guess the wind was blowing out at Wrigley, tonight. Roberts added another SB to his total for 4 on the year so far, and Lewis was too busy using his power to steal anything. "Captain" Jack Taschner got tagged for 2 HRs in the same third of an inning, which inflated his ERA to a silicone implant sized 40.51. I'm thinking about sitting him down at AAA and bringing up someone else, because he's getting hit fairly often.

4/12: SF 15 @ CHC 11 (12 innings) - WP: Benitez (1-1, 3.60 ERA), BS: Valverde (1); HR: Bonds (2) [736], Aurilia 2 (5), Molina (1).
Dayum, what a game this was. I want to mention Rich Aurilia hitting for the cycle against the Cubs, and his two home runs... because holee crap was that a career night for him. And I love Aurilia to death, so I'm always happy to see him do well at the plate. Noah Lowry's not looking so hot, guys. He got ND'ed, but he also got tagged for 8 ER off 12 HA in 7 innings with 134 pitches thrown. And he wasn't tired, but then, he's young and can go for innings at a stretch. Once again, folks, your player of the game... Rich Aurilia. Oh, and Bonds hit his 736th career home run. ESPNews, I am not!

ROSTER MOVES: Designated MR Jack Taschner for assignment and purchased the contract of one Mr. Tim "Seabiscuit" Lincecum. Tiny Tim is now my #5 starter.

4/13: SF 10 @ CHC 7 - WP: Benitez (2-1, 6.00 ERA), SV: Correia (1); HR: Molina (2).
We took the series from the Cubs and all I can say is that the wind must have been blowing to the outfield to account for the ball flying really well. Benitez makes his second consecutive appearance and earns his second win, fighting tooth and nail for the coveted closer spot from the younger Valverde. Valvy's ehausted right now, since I left him in for two innings in the previous game. Zito's shaky pitching gave up 5 earned runs, kicking his ERA up to 3.60 after being pulled in the fifth inning. I'm now looking to see if I can bolster my rotation... because as it stands right now, Morris is my ace. This win means we claw our way to a .500 record and we're sitting in second place in the NL West. Let's hope we can keep this truck rolling.

4/14: COL 6 @ SF 8: WP: Cain (1-2, 8.31 ERA, 6 K), SV: Valverde (2)
The flight back into the city was pretty quiet. The boys partied hard after pulling out that win in Chicago, so most of them were trying to get some sleep. Matt Cain took the mound and he told me he was absolutely determined to get a win this time around and he was not fooling. He must have given Bruce Bochy a good talking to because in spite of having given up six earned runs, Boch kept him in the game. As the game worn on, though, you could see him settling into the game a bit more with each pitch. I'm convinced he'll get better as the season goes on, and I'm sure Lowry will do the same. I'm worried about Zito, though, since he's tying up a significant portion of my payroll with very little to show for it so far. Aurilia was the hot bat of the night (again), going 3-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored. He's batting .404 with 5 HR and 21 RBIs, and we haven't finished the second week of April yet. He's on fire! And to top off the night, we took first place in the NL West, since the Dodgers lost and the Diamondbacks won... which is weird because now the Dodgers fell to fourth and the DBacks are in second place.

4/15: COL 4 @ SF 1 - LP: Morris (1-2, 2.16 ERA)
Buchholz was lights out tonight for Colorado. He managed to get into a little bit of trouble but got out of it due to some spectacular plays from his defense. And I do mean spectacular plays. Salazar robbed Aurilia of a home run in the third, which would have tied it up at 2 a piece. Oh, well. Can't win them all. All in all, I'm liking how Morris is clicking along this season. He's making Zito look bad.

4/16: COL 8 @ SF 5 - LP: Lincecum (0-1, 8.00 ERA, CG); HR: Bonds (3) [737]
It was a rough first night on the major league mound for Tiny Tim, but Bochy left him in to finish the mess and give the bullpen the night off. I'm not sure I agree with his call and I made a mental note to discuss his tactics at a more opportune time. I didn't feel like it was a good thing for Lincecum to suffer a loss along with a complete game. But the kid told me that he could pitch in upwards of 140 pitches, so tossing 146 is right around what he was used to in college ball. I was quick to point out that college ball and major league ball were two different animals, but he wasn't going to listen to me. I'm wondering if I should keep the team doctor on alert. Bonds hit his 737th career home run in the loss. And we fell to fourth place as the Dback won again and moved into first.

I sent over SS Marcus Sanders for CL Jose Valverde and MR Felipe Paulino del Guidice (I kid you not; that was his full name) on Opening Day.
Just FYI, Marcus Sanders and Felipe Paulino del Guidice are both real players. Sanders is a speedster in the Giants organization, and I thought FPdG was a minor league pitcher (with nice stuff) in the Astros organization, but I guess maybe he was dealt to AZ.

Good to know. Sanders isn't doing so well in the minors. He's all legs and no arms, so he can't get on base in order to show off his speed.

Week Three: 4/17-4/24

4/17: STL 8 @ SF 1 - LP: Zito (2-1, 3.76 ERA)
In spite of the loss, Barry Zito hit his first major league double off Reyes in the 3rd. Although the Cardinals scored eight off our pitchers, only three were off of Zito. He managed to hold runners as St. Louis stranded six of their eight with Zito on the mound. It was David Cortes who gave up four and then Kline gave up one more. Pujols and Spezio both went yard off Cortes to drive in four runs.

4/18: STL 0 @ SF 3 - WP: Benitez (3-1, 4.32 ERA), SV: Valverde (3); HR: Aurilia (6)
Noah Lowry fell to the ground in the middle of the third inning after throwing a changeup to Kennedy. Scared the crap out of Bochy, because he ran out to the mound with the trainer and the infield came in. Molina called time, fortunately, because no one else had the presence of mind to do so. He had to be pulled due to back spasms. Boch was faced with a tough decision because most of the bullpen was exhausted, but Armando Benitez stepped up and said he would take the ball. He went two and third scoreless, with one HA and one K. The interesting thing of it was, everyone in the bullpen stepped up. Cortes took it next and in spite of having pitched yesterday, went one and a third with two strikeouts, then Hennessey for three outs, then Kline pitched and K'ed Preston Wilson while Eckstein was on first. But that was about the limit of his gas tank, and he let Correia close out the eighth with no runs scored. Valverde closed it down and it was a beautiful thing, seeing all those tired arms come together to help Noah out. Benitez got the win, but I think it was his willingness to do what needed to be done that inspired everyone else to start playing like a team.

4/19: STL 6 @ SF 5 - LP: Morris (1-3, 3.09 ERA); HR: Bonds (4) [738]
Morris gave up five earned runs and one unearned off of an Omar Vizquel error. He seemed in good spirits after the game, because it was really a matter of batting after both starters turned the ball over to the bullpen. Once again, Benitez shut down the eighth and Hennessey took the ninth. Bonds hit a 2-run shot off Claussen in the fourth for his 738th career home run.

4/20: OFF DAY

4/21: ARI 2 @ SF 6 - WP: Cain (2-2, 6.39 ERA); HR: Durham (3)
Fred Lewis and Ray Durham combined with baserunning and a key home run to break the 2-2 tie that lasted from the third all the way to the seventh in a pitching duel between Randy Johnson and Matt Cain. Both gave up two runs in the first innings, but they both settled down and did not allow much more until Ray Durham broke Randy Johnson's concentration and hit a two-run bomb after Johnson walked Lewis with two out. Cain pitched eight and struck out six.

TRADE: Traded 29-year old minor league catcher Y. Haad and 29-year old reliever J. Taschner to the Arizona Diamondbacks, getting 23-year old minor league starting pitcher D. Eveland, 28-year old minor league starting pitcher S. Smith and 22-year old minor league starting pitcher M. Torra in return.

I liked Eveland's numbers and Torra has potential under the right pitching coach at the rookie level. Haad was behind Knoedler and Alfonzo and Molina for the catcher spot and he is needed more by the Diamondbacks.

4/22: ARI 3 @ SF 4 - WP: Lincecum (1-1, 5.29 ERA), SV: Benitez (2); HR: Molina 2 (4)
Seabiscuit went eight innings and gave up a mere two runs while striking out seven batters. Armando Benitez earned himself another save and struck out two of three batters, but he gave up a home run to DaVanon in true drama whore fashion, giving every Giant fan in the place a heart attack. Bengie Molina went yard twice and he accounted for all four RBIs in the game.

4/23: ARI 7 @ SF 5 - LP: Zito (2-2, 4.94 ERA); HR: Bonds (5) [739], Durham (4)
Bonds likes to homer in games where we lose. Of his last five, three were hit in games lost by the Giants. Zito looked more than just a little shaky out on the mound and I'm wondering if Bochy has noticed it too. I checked his pitching rotation and he bumped Zito to the three spot to give him two more days' rest and brought up Pedro Liriano from Fresno to help fill the hole left by Noah Lowry. Even though we lost the game, there were a lot of great plays made and hits by the lineup. They just outhit us by two.

End of the Week Thoughts: Well, I'm worried about Zito and I think that Sabean's decision to pay him that much money was a little on the dumb side. I'm sure we could have gotten by with a one or two year contract to see how he does. Historically, Zito performs better in the later months of the season and honestly, that's probably when we're going to need him most. April's just the first month and no one's knocked out of the hunt for a playoff spot in the first month. What concerns me most is Lowry's back. I'm hoping that with Bochy giving him an extra week to rest, he can bounce back and get back into the rotation. I'm curious to see how Liriano does, too.

Okay, this kind of sucks... but the database for this dynasty got corrupted while trying to load. So, I'm pretty much stuck until I can figure out how to get it working again. Stupid me for not backing it up!

My upgrade to OOTP8 fixed the unrecoverable file problem. Weird.

Week Four: 4/24-4/30

4/24: SF 4 @ HOU 2 - WP: Morris (2-3, 3.13 ERA), SV: Valverde (4)
Pre-Game Notes: A lot of movement for team today. I had to do some wheeling and dealing to offload Benitez and Steve Kline. After a week-long discussion with the GM of the Texas Rangers, I managed to get more than full value for Benitez: I took four prospects off his hands and put them to work in the farm system. For Kline, I managed to package him and David Cortes to Colorado in exchange for minor leaguer Troy Tulowitski and three other minor leaguers. Good riddance. I also picked up Pedro Feliciano off waivers from the Mets. I purchased the contract of speedster Antoan Richardson from Triple-A and DFA'd Pedro Feliz.

Bochy started Richardson in the lead-off spot and the kid did not disappoint. In his first at-bat, off Jason Jennings, he bunted a single. Fred Lewis sac'ed him over to second, and he made it home off of Ray Durham's bloop to left field. Inside the first ten minutes of the game, the kid was one-for-one with a run. He ended up winning Player of the Game honors (2-4, RBI, Run).

4/25: SF 13 @ HOU 3 - WP: Liriano (1-0, 4.50 ERA); HR: Molina (5), Durham (5), Vizquel (1)
What a game! Omar Vizquel and Bengie Molina led the hit parade off of Astros' starter Barzilla and his bullpen. Vizquel went 4-for-5 with a home run and 2 RBIs, while Molina brought in 3 RBIs with a home run in the top of the seventh. Richardson showed off his speed tonight with three stolen bags, while Durham and Vizquel picked up an SB each.

4/26: SF 6 @ HOU 4 - WP: Cain (3-2, 6.10 ERA), SV: Valverde (5); HR: Aurilia (7), Durham (6)
The team went for the sweep and got it! The bullpen was the star of the game, holding onto the lead that Cain handed off. Hennesey and Correia earned their holds for the night before Valverde came in for the save. Antoan Richardson proved his worth once more (4-5, RBI, 2 R, 2 2B, 3 SB) and Bruce Bochy couldn't be happier with his new lead-off man. Fred Lewis bat a thousand (4-4, 2 RBI, Run, 3B, SB), and Rich Aurilia and Ray Durham found the stands with home runs.

4/27: OFF DAY

4/28: SF 3 @ SD 6 - LP: Lincecum (1-2, 5.40 ERA)
I want to say one thing about Seabiscuit. He gave up five earned runs, stuck out eight, and stayed in until the end, earning a complete game loss. That's a stat I rarely get to see. Richardson was kept off the base paths, going 0-for-4, but Fred Lewis decided to show the kid how to steal bases, because he added five stolen bases to his career stats today. Unfortunately, none of those SBs turned into runs, because he never stole home or crossed it off of a hit. It was a thundering crash to come off of a three-game sweep the day before yesterday, but we're hoping to get back into the swing of things.

Note: I got a call from Washington's GM, asking if I would part with closer Erick Threets (Single A) and starter AJ Murray (Single A). Both are top prospects, and Murray I acquired in the trade with Texas. I asked what he might offer in return, and I was shocked to hear him put up Ryan Zimmerman's name. I could really use his bat.

4/29: SF 2 @ SD 4 - LP: Zito (2-3, 5.02 ERA); HR: Bonds (6) [738]
All of the runs in this game came off of Bonds' line drive 2-run homer to right field in the top of the third inning, off of Greg Maddux. Once again, he loves to homer only when we're losing. Of course, I'm being facetious. Bonds doesn't like to lose anymore than the rest of us. Zito is failing to live up to his end of the contract, so far. As the ace of the staff, he's not setting a good example. I may need to start seeking another pitcher to possibly replace him if needed.

4/30: SF 4 @ SD 2 - WP: Liriano (2-0, 3.21 ERA), SV: Valverde (6)
Liriano continued to impress me. He manages to go eight innings with two earned runs and eight strikeouts. Richardson and Lewis tore up the base paths, stealing six bases total. Liriano got caught off base, but they ruled it as a CS, so I think he's the only pitcher to have a CS so far this year. The win was all smallball today. Bunts, singles, line drives. No doubles or triples were hit. Richardson would get on with a bunt single, then steal second. Lewis bunted him over for Durham to nudge him in with another single. It was like that for the entire game.

Thoughts on the Week: I'm starting to see the team come together a little bit more, now. I think we're just missing a few more pieces to the puzzle, and I might have to start putting more of my prospects out there to see if I can't get us into the playoffs. Promoting Richardson and Lincecum seem to be the best moves so far, and I'm keeping my eye out to see if we can't bolster our offense a little better.

Week Five: 5/1-5/7

5/1: SF 9 @ ARI 10 - LP: Feliciano (0-2, 6.97 ERA), BS: Feliciano (1); HR: Bonds (7) [739]
I'll start off with some good news: Fred Lewis won Rookie of the Month for the National League in April. It was announced today and the clubhouse celebrated a little bit before batting practice. I sprung for the plaque and we decided we were going to honor him when we returned to San Francisco on Thursday. Also, Ryan Zimmerman made the flight from Dulles to Phoenix to join the team following the trade I made with their GM. I had to re-DFA Feliz in order to make room on the 25-man roster and get him off the 40-man roster to make room. This game was tied going into the third and then the Giants opened it up with a big inning of five runs. Frandsen led off with a line drive double, then Cain grounded out. Richardson singled Frandsen home. Lewis singled Richardson to second. Zimmerman grounded out, moving Lewis and Richardson over to second and third, respectively, and then Barry Bonds doubled them both home. Durham singles Bonds home (to watch Bonds run like that was amazing, but I swear I thought I heard his knees crunch), Aurilia moves Durham to third on another single, Molina's single scores Durham and moves Aurilia to third. Then the guy who opened the inning, Frandsen, returned to be struck out by the reliever, Adam Peterson. It was a great inning to watch. In the end, though, Pedro Feliciano, my New York pickup, blew the save in the eighth, giving up four runs when we were up by three. Heartbreaking loss and I can only hope we can salvage this two-game series tomorrow with a win.

5/2: SF 4 @ ARI 5 (10 innings) - LP: Valverde (0-1, 1.86 ERA); HR: Molina (6)
Morris had a decent outing today, managing to hold on to a tie through to the seventh inning before turning it over to the bullpen. Hennessey kept Arizona scoreless, and we were tied going into the ninth, when Valverde took the ball. I guess Arizona knows their closer well, because in the bottom of the tenth, with Chad Tracy on third and Hairston on second, Stephen Drew singled in the winning run to win the game. We're headed home to play the Padres, and all I can day is that Zimmerman's becoming a fast friend among the players and staff.

5/3: SD 0 @ SF 1 - WP: Atchison (1-0, 2.45 ERA), SV: Valverde (7, 1.69 ERA)
Zito must've heard my disappointment somehow, because for nearly five innings today, he looked good. Real good. He went 4.2 IP, with 7 Ks, allowing only 3 hits. His curveball was working good. My only disappointment with today's win was the fact that he didn't stay in long enough to get the win, but as he pitched nearly 100 by the second out, Boch didn't want to risk blowing his arm out too soon. Scott Atchinson, whom we picked up in free agency in the off season, came in to take over and he was determined to make sure Zito's hard work didn't go to waste. He stayed in for 2 1/3 innings, struck out three, and threw nearly 40 pitches. Correia came in to take over, maintaining the shutout for the rest of the inning. Feliciano, desperate to redeem himself for Tuesday's debacle, also picked up a Hold. Valverde came in and took a little while to settled down, walking two, but he got his three outs and earned a save. Ryan Zimmerman had the lone RBI; knocking in Antoan Richardson from second in the bottom of the first. All goose eggs from there, but one run did it for us and the fans were grateful.

5/4: SD 3 @ SF 8 - WP: Lincecum (2-2, 4.76 ERA); HR: Richardson (1), Molina (7)
Let's hear it for the boy! Tiny Tim Lincencum (9.0 IP, 9 K) goes complete game once more, but this time, it's a win. He duked it out against Greg Maddux and came out on top, thanks to the offense. Though I thought he should've been declared as Player of the Game, they went with Antoan Richardson (4-4, .561, HR, 3 RBIs, 4 R, 4 SB). Richardson muscled it right over the left field fence into the second row of seats to drive in three runs, and he was all smiles. The fan even brought it back to him after the game, which I thought was really nice of them. I took his name down and passed it to the front office to maybe get him a signed picture or ball. It was a special moment for Antoan, because his family flew in from Nassau to watch him play this weekend. Rich Aurilia was injured while running the bases in the fourth inning, we placed him on the 15-day DL giving us an opportunity to activate Noah Lowry from the DL.

Note: I finally dumped Tyler Walker off to the Yankees, receiving a couple of minor leaguers in return.

5/5: MIL 1 @ SF 10 - WP: Cain (4-2, 5.20 ERA); HR: Molina (8), Durham (7)
Not to be outdone by his younger counterpart, Matt Cain (9.0 IP, 9 K) stepped up and gave the bullpen a second day off, earning a CG. And he earned SION's PotG honors. If I had to pick a runner-up, I'd go with Kevin "The Ocho" Frandsen. He was all over the ball today, with a double and a triple, driving in two of the ten RBIs. Molina also showed off his bat, with two singles and a two-run homer, driving in two RBIs. Durham grand-slammed off of Jose Capellan in the bottom of the fourth, which drove the fans absolutely nuts. Outstanding Saturday afternoon at the ballpark.

5/6: MIL 7 @ SF 5 - LP: Atchison (1-1, 3.75), BS: Lowry (1, 8.10 ERA)
I have to hand it to Ned Yost. After getting decimated yesterday, he adjusted very quickly. First, they took Antoan Richardson's speed off the table, by playing him shallow. It forced him to try and hit the ball into the outfield, but all he seemed to hit were groundballs to second or third. We're going to need to work on his hitting a bit more, as I expect this isn't the first team we'll face who will adjust themselves accordingly. Without Richardson or Lewis (day off) tearing up the base paths, there was no one to single in as before. Boch tried to adjust his game plan, but I think Yost had his number. Liriano did a yeoman's job in the first six innings, but Noah Lowry blew the lead in the eighth and then Atchison just had a bad hand dealt to him in the ninth. Tough loss, but I hope they learn from it.

5/7: MIL 9 @ SF 3 - LP: Morris (2-4, 4.24 ERA); HR: Gonzalez (1), Molina (9)
Antoan Richardson was honored by the National League, as their Player of the Week for last week's performance. I'm proud of our rookies; they're proving to be good decisions in spite of the losses. And speaking of losses... Unfortunately, it just wasn't Morris' night. He gave up an early lead to the Brew Crew in the first three innings of the game. Going into the top of the fourth, they led 4-1 and Morris came out with two on, and Atchison couldn't hold them. Feliciano came in, gave up three more and it was downhill from there. Boch started Luis Gonzalez at third tonight, to give Zimmerman the night off, and he hit his first HR of the season, a solo homer to center. Molina also managed a solo HR to right field. Well, we have an off day tomorrow before we play Houston on Wednesday. Boch has a team meeting tomorrow morning and I hope that it does some good.
